Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Missing Answers

The security officer stood in the doorway holding a thin folder.

Nobody moved.

Not even Madison.

For several seconds, the only sound inside the principal’s office was the faint hum of the old ceiling lights.

Then Principal Reynolds looked at the folder.

“What is that?””

The officer stepped inside and placed it on the desk.

“This was found in Locker 214.””

Madison’s eyes immediately widened.

“No.””

It was barely a whisper.

But everyone heard it.

Naomi noticed.

So did Principal Reynolds.

The principal slowly turned toward Madison.

“You know what’s inside?””

Madison’s expression changed instantly.

“No. I mean… I don’t know why you’re looking at me.””

The officer opened the folder.

“Because your name was written on it.””

The room went silent again.

Naomi felt a strange mixture of emotions.

She had expected evidence.

She had expected proof.

But she had not expected Madison to react like that.

Not with confusion.

With fear.

The officer removed a stack of papers.

At first glance, they looked ordinary.

Printed pages.

Nothing special.

Then Naomi saw the words at the top.

*Westbridge High Scholarship Assessment — Confidential*

Her stomach tightened.

Those were the test papers.

The actual questions.

The exam that dozens of students had spent months preparing for.

The exam that could decide who received financial support for college.

The exam that Madison and her friends had planned to steal.

Principal Reynolds looked at the papers.

“Where did you find these?””

“Inside the locker,” the officer replied.

“Whose locker?””

The officer hesitated.

Then answered.

“Madison Vale’s.””

Madison immediately stepped forward.

“That’s impossible.””

Principal Reynolds looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because I don’t even use that locker.””

The officer raised an eyebrow.

“Your student ID was used to open it this morning.””

Madison froze.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

“That’s not possible.””

The officer pulled out another piece of paper.

“Security footage shows someone accessing the locker at 7:12 a.m.””

Madison crossed her arms.

“Then show me the footage.””

The officer looked at Principal Reynolds.

“We’re reviewing it now.””

Madison relaxed slightly.

Almost like she had found a way out.

Naomi noticed.

That was the thing about Madison.

Even when trapped, she searched for the smallest crack in the wall.

A way to escape.

A way to make someone else take the fall.

And then Naomi understood.

This wasn’t just about stealing the answers.

There was another layer.

Someone had placed those papers there.

Someone wanted Madison to be caught.

Or maybe someone wanted Madison to look guilty.

Principal Reynolds picked up the papers.

“Madison, until this investigation is complete, you are suspended from all school activities.””

Her face changed.

The cheer captain.

The girl who always looked untouchable.

Suddenly looked like a normal student.

“No.””

The word came out immediately.

“You can’t do that.””

“I can.””

“You don’t understand.””

Principal Reynolds remained calm.

“This is a serious matter.””

Madison looked around the room.

At Mr. Carter.

At the security officer.

Then at Naomi.

Her eyes stopped there.

“You.””

Naomi blinked.

“What?””

“You knew about this.””

“No.””

“You knew they would find the locker.””

“I didn’t.””

Madison laughed.

But there was no humor in it.

“Of course.””

She stepped closer.

“You’re smarter than everyone thinks.””

Naomi stared at her.

“I didn’t put anything in your locker.””

“Maybe not.””

Madison lowered her voice.

“But you made sure I would look guilty.””

Naomi shook her head.

“You’re trying to blame me again.””

Madison’s eyes hardened.

“Because it always works.””

Naomi frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Madison smiled.

A small, bitter smile.

“You really don’t know?””

The question bothered Naomi.

Because for the first time, Madison wasn’t acting like someone in control.

She was acting like someone who knew a secret.

A secret Naomi didn’t understand.

Before Naomi could ask, Principal Reynolds interrupted.

“That’s enough.””

Madison looked away.

The investigation continued for another hour.

Questions.

Statements.

Documents.

Every answer created two more questions.

By lunchtime, the entire school knew something had happened.

Rumors moved faster than facts.

Some students said Madison had been caught cheating.

Others said Naomi had framed her.

Others claimed the whole scholarship competition was canceled.

Naomi sat alone in the library, staring at her untouched lunch.

She should have felt relieved.

She had done the right thing.

She had protected herself.

But something felt wrong.

The locker.

The papers.

Madison’s reaction.

Someone had changed the situation after Naomi submitted her evidence.

Someone had added a new piece to the puzzle.

And Naomi didn’t know why.

A chair moved across from her.

She looked up.

Chloe sat down.

Naomi immediately became cautious.

“What do you want?””

Chloe looked exhausted.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

The confident girl who had stood beside Madison that morning was gone.

“I need to tell you something.””

Naomi closed her book.

“I’m listening.””

Chloe looked around the library.

“Madison didn’t put those answers in her locker.””

Naomi’s expression didn’t change.

“How do you know?””

“Because she told me.””

A pause.

“She told you?””

Chloe nodded.

“She was angry after she heard about your recording. She said she needed to find a way to protect herself.””

Naomi leaned forward.

“And?””

“She said someone else was involved.””

The words caught Naomi’s attention.

“Who?””

Chloe looked down.

“I don’t know.””

“You must have heard a name.””

“I heard her say one thing.””

“What?””

Chloe swallowed.

“She said, ‘If he wants to play this game, he can play it alone.’”

Naomi frowned.

“He?””

Chloe nodded.

“Madison never sounded scared of anyone.””

She looked directly at Naomi.

“But she sounded scared of him.””

The library suddenly felt colder.

Naomi thought back.

The conversation she recorded.

The plan.

The voices.

She remembered something she had ignored.

There had been a fourth person mentioned.

Not directly.

Just a sentence.

A name cut off halfway.

At the time, Naomi thought it was nothing.

Now she wasn’t sure.

“Chloe,” Naomi said quietly, “who could make Madison Vale afraid?””

Chloe didn’t answer.

Because someone else answered for her.

A voice came from behind Naomi.

“Someone who knows exactly how far she’s willing to go.””

Naomi turned.

A boy stood beside the bookshelf.

Ethan Cole.

Student council president.

Top of the class.

The person everyone trusted.

Naomi knew him.

Everyone did.

He was the kind of person teachers praised and students respected.

But something about his expression made her uncomfortable.

Because he wasn’t surprised.

Not by the investigation.

Not by the evidence.

Not by the conversation.

He looked like he had been waiting.

Chloe immediately stood.

“I should go.””

She left before Naomi could stop her.

Now only Naomi and Ethan remained.

“What do you want?”” Naomi asked.

Ethan looked at the book in front of her.

“The same thing you want.””

“What’s that?””

“The truth.””

Naomi studied him.

“Then why do you sound like you already know it?””

Ethan was quiet.

Then he placed something on the table.

A photograph.

Naomi looked down.

Her heart stopped.

It was a picture of Madison.

Standing beside the scholarship exam storage room.

But that wasn’t what shocked her.

It was the person standing next to Madison.

Someone Naomi recognized.

Someone she never expected.

Ethan watched her reaction.

“You thought Madison was the whole story.””

Naomi looked up.

“Who took this?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

Instead, he said something that made Naomi’s blood run cold.

“Because the person who gave me this photo…”

He paused.

“…is the same person who helped Madison create the plan to destroy you.””

Naomi stared at him.

“Who?””

Ethan pushed the photograph closer.

On the back was a handwritten name.

May you like

A name that made Naomi forget how to breathe.

Because it belonged to someone she trusted.
