Chapter 7: The Face Behind the Mask

Naomi stared at the screen.

She wanted to believe she was seeing it wrong.

She wanted the image to blur.

She wanted the camera angle to change, the lighting to shift, anything that would give her a reason to doubt what she was seeing.

But the footage remained clear.

The person walking through the hallway.

The person opening the scholarship storage room.

The person placing the folder inside.

The person using Naomi’s student ID.

Was Mrs. Anderson.

Nobody spoke.

Not even Mrs. Anderson.

She stood frozen near the office door, the same old file still clutched in her hands.

The woman who had helped Naomi write her first scholarship essay.

The woman who had stayed after school to help her prepare.

The woman who had told her, “Your future is bigger than your circumstances.””

The woman who had just been caught using Naomi’s identity.

“No.””

The word came from Mrs. Anderson.

Quiet.

Broken.

Naomi turned toward her.

“Don’t.””

Mrs. Anderson looked at her.

“Naomi, please.””

“Don’t tell me there’s an explanation.””

“There is.””

Naomi laughed softly.

But there was no happiness in it.

“Everyone has an explanation.””

The words hung in the air.

Principal Reynolds looked between them.

“Mrs. Anderson, what did you do?””

Mrs. Anderson looked down.

And that was enough.

The silence was an answer.

The security officer stepped forward.

“Should I call the superintendent?””

“No.””

Principal Reynolds raised a hand.

“Not yet.””

The officer looked confused.

“Sir?””

“We need the full story.””

Naomi looked at him.

“The full story?””

Her voice shook slightly.

“She used my ID.””

“I know.””

“She planted evidence.””

“I know.””

“Then why are we talking about a story?””

Principal Reynolds didn’t answer.

Because he understood.

Naomi wasn’t angry because someone had betrayed her.

She was angry because she had trusted the wrong person.

Again.

Mrs. Anderson slowly walked toward the desk.

“I didn’t plant the evidence.””

Naomi stared at her.

“You’re in the video.””

“Yes.””

“You used my ID.””

“Yes.””

“Then explain.””

Mrs. Anderson closed her eyes.

“When I entered that room, I wasn’t putting something there.””

“Then what were you doing?””

“I was taking something out.””

Everyone froze.

The security officer frowned.

“Taking what?””

“The original scholarship files.””

Principal Reynolds looked shocked.

“The original files?””

Mrs. Anderson nodded.

“The ones showing the changes.””

Naomi looked at the tablet again.

The footage showed Mrs. Anderson entering the storage room.

But it didn’t show what she removed.

The camera only captured the outside hallway.

“Why use my ID?””

Mrs. Anderson looked at her.

“Because I needed someone who could access the room without raising immediate suspicion.””

Naomi felt a sharp pain in her chest.

“So you used me.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

Her voice became stronger.

“You didn’t ask me.””

“I couldn’t.””

“Why?””

“Because you would have said no.””

The answer was honest.

And somehow that made it worse.

Naomi stared at her.

“You knew me well enough to know I would refuse.””

Mrs. Anderson looked away.

“Yes.””

“Because you knew it was wrong.””

A long silence followed.

Mrs. Anderson didn’t deny it.

Principal Reynolds stepped closer.

“What files did you take?””

“The evidence of scholarship changes.””

“Where are they now?””

Mrs. Anderson hesitated.

That hesitation changed everything.

Naomi noticed.

“You don’t have them.””

Mrs. Anderson looked at her.

“What?””

“You don’t have the files anymore.””

The counselor’s face changed.

Naomi continued.

“You took them because you thought they would prove everything.””

She pointed toward the tablet.

“But then someone found out.””

Nobody moved.

“And they took them from you.””

Mrs. Anderson’s silence confirmed it.

Principal Reynolds looked angry.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“You expect us to believe that?””

“It’s the truth.””

Naomi watched her carefully.

Mrs. Anderson was lying about some things.

But not everything.

The fear in her eyes was real.

“What happened after you entered the room?””

Mrs. Anderson swallowed.

“I left with the files.””

“And?””

“Someone followed me.””

“Who?””

“I never saw their face.””

Naomi frowned.

“But you knew who they were.””

Mrs. Anderson looked at her.

“How?””

“Because you’re afraid of them.””

A painful silence.

Mrs. Anderson looked older suddenly.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

“His name is Thomas.””

The room went still.

Principal Reynolds’ expression changed.

“Thomas?””

Mrs. Anderson nodded.

“He works with the scholarship board.””

Naomi remembered the name.

Not because she knew him.

Because she had heard it before.

At ceremonies.

In speeches.

Thomas Whitmore.

The man who always stood beside Principal Reynolds.

The man who always praised the scholarship program.

The man who shook students’ hands while telling them hard work mattered.

“What does he want?””

Mrs. Anderson looked at Naomi.

“You.””

The answer made her heart drop.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because you were never supposed to receive that scholarship.””

Naomi felt like the room tilted.

“What?””

Mrs. Anderson continued quietly.

“Your scores were the highest.””

“That’s why I got it.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“That’s why they wanted to remove you.””

Naomi stared.

“Why?””

“Because you represented the one thing they couldn’t control.””

“What?””

“Proof.””

The word echoed.

Mrs. Anderson walked to the desk.

“The scholarship system was supposed to reward students who earned it. But over time, powerful families started influencing decisions.””

She looked at Naomi.

“Students like you were dangerous.””

Naomi frowned.

“Dangerous?””

“Because if someone like you succeeded, it proved the system could work without them.””

The idea was almost impossible to accept.

She wasn’t dangerous because she had power.

She was dangerous because she didn’t.

Because she was evidence that their control wasn’t absolute.

Ethan appeared at the office door.

Everyone turned.

Naomi hadn’t even noticed him arrive.

“How long have you been there?”” Principal Reynolds asked.

“Long enough.””

Ethan walked inside.

His expression was serious.

“I found something.””

Naomi looked at him.

“What?””

Ethan held up his phone.

“A connection between Thomas Whitmore and Madison.””

Principal Reynolds stepped closer.

“Show me.””

Ethan opened a document.

It was a payment record.

A transfer.

Naomi read the name.

“Madison?””

Ethan nodded.

“Not directly.””

He pointed.

“Her father’s company.””

Mrs. Anderson frowned.

“Why would Thomas pay them?””

“Not pay.””

Ethan shook his head.

“Receive.””

The room became silent.

Naomi looked closer.

The transfer was from a company connected to Madison’s family.

To an account belonging to a private consultant.

Owned by Thomas Whitmore.

Principal Reynolds’ face changed.

“He wasn’t helping Madison.””

“No,” Ethan said.

“He was controlling her.””

Naomi felt a wave of realization.

Madison wasn’t the mastermind.

She was a piece.

A powerful piece.

But still a piece.

Then Naomi remembered something.

The way Madison reacted when she saw the locker evidence.

The fear.

The anger.

The accusation.

She hadn’t looked surprised.

She had looked betrayed.

“She knew.””

Everyone looked at Naomi.

“She knew someone was using her.””

Ethan nodded slowly.

“Probably.””

“But she didn’t know who.””

Mrs. Anderson looked at Naomi.

“Then we need to find her.””

“Why?””

“Because if Thomas realizes she can expose him…”

She stopped.

Naomi understood.

Madison was no longer the threat.

She was a witness.

And witnesses disappeared when powerful people became desperate.

At that moment, Naomi’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at it.

Naomi answered.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a familiar voice spoke.

Madison.

But not the confident, mocking voice Naomi knew.

This one was different.

Scared.

“Naomi.””

She immediately stood straighter.

“Where are you?””

“Don’t ask.””

“What happened?””

A shaky breath came through the phone.

“I was wrong.””

Naomi said nothing.

Madison continued.

“I thought I could control him.””

“Who?””

Silence.

Then Madison whispered:

“Thomas.””

Naomi’s grip tightened around the phone.

“Madison, where are you?””

“I don’t have much time.””

“Tell me.””

Another pause.

Then Madison said something that made Naomi’s blood run cold.

“The person you trust most…”

Her voice cracked.

“…is the reason your scholarship was never meant to happen.””

The call suddenly ended.

Naomi stared at the dead screen.

Everyone waited.

Then Ethan asked:

“What did she say?””

Naomi slowly looked up.

“She said the person I trust most is behind this.””

Mrs. Anderson went pale.

Principal Reynolds looked toward the door.

And Naomi realized something terrifying.

The person controlling everything wasn’t hiding anymore.

May you like

They were getting closer.

And they knew exactly how to hurt her.
