Chapter 11: The Woman Who Planned It All
Dad stared at the shareholder document.
For several seconds, he didn't blink.
“Lauren never owned forty percent of my company.””
Daniel pulled out another paper.
“She did. My mother invested her inheritance when you started the business.””
Dad took the document.
The signatures were old, but the ownership records were clear.
Lauren Bennett.
Forty percent.
Marcus Bennett.
Sixty percent.
Dad shook his head.
“She told me she wanted nothing to do with the company after we separated.””
Daniel nodded.
“That's what she told you. But according to these records, her shares were transferred three years later.””
“Who authorized the transfer?””
Daniel pointed to the bottom.
“Vanessa.””
Dad stared at him.
“Vanessa wasn't even working for the company.””
“She didn't need to. She used a power of attorney that my mother says she never signed.””
I felt a strange chill.
The pattern was becoming impossible to ignore.
First, my mother's trust.
Then the hospital documents.
Then my identity.
Now Dad's original company.
Vanessa had been moving between people's lives, collecting documents, and taking control of things that never belonged to her.
“Why?”” I asked.
Daniel looked at me.
“Because she wanted access to the Bennett family assets.””
Dad rubbed his forehead.
“But why involve Lauren?””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Because Vanessa told her that if she cooperated, she would help me reconnect with you.””
Dad looked confused.
“Reconnect with me?””
Daniel nodded.
“My mother thought Vanessa was helping us find you. She didn't realize Vanessa was using her identity to gain control of the company.””
He opened another file.
“Then, when your mother became ill, Vanessa saw another opportunity.””
Dad stood.
“She deliberately approached Eleanor?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at the photograph of my mother.
“Because Eleanor had access to the trust.””
Dad walked to the window.
For a long moment, he said nothing.
Then he turned.
“Where is Vanessa now?””
Daniel checked his phone.
“I have an address.””
We drove to a hotel on the outskirts of the city.
Daniel had discovered that Michael had recently booked a room under a different name. The reservation was linked to an email address associated with Bennett Strategic Ventures.
Dad wanted to call the police immediately.
Daniel agreed.
But before we arrived, Detective Harris called.
“We've received the bank's preliminary fraud report,” she said.
“The attempted transfer has been flagged.””
Dad exhaled.
“Can you freeze it?””
“We're working with the financial institution. However, we need to speak with Maya regarding the identity documents.””
“She's with me.””
“Good. Don't approach Vanessa or Michael yourselves.””
Dad looked at Daniel.
“We're already on our way to the hotel.””
“Mr. Bennett, please listen. Let our officers handle the contact.””
He reluctantly agreed.
We parked across the street.
Ten minutes later, two police vehicles arrived.
Detective Harris approached us.
“Which room?””
Daniel pointed toward the building.
“Room 214.””
She nodded to the officers.
They entered.
We waited outside.
Five minutes passed.
Then ten.
Finally, Detective Harris emerged.
Her expression was serious.
“Vanessa isn't here.””
“Michael?”” Dad asked.
“Neither.””
Daniel frowned.
“Then where did they go?””
Detective Harris held up a plastic evidence bag.
Inside was a hotel key card.
“We found this in the room. There was also a laptop, several identification documents, and a printed copy of Maya's bank transfer authorization.””
My stomach tightened.
“Was my name on everything?””
“Yes.””
“Did you find anything else?””
The detective looked at Dad.
“A handwritten note.””
She removed a photograph of the note from her folder.
It contained three short sentences.
*Get the girl to sign.*
*Move the remaining money.*
*Once Marcus is exposed, nobody will believe him.*
I looked at Dad.
He seemed to have stopped breathing.
“Exposed for what?”” he asked.
Detective Harris didn't answer immediately.
She handed him another photograph.
It showed an old financial document.
A transfer from my mother's account.
The authorization signature was Marcus Bennett.
Dad shook his head.
“I didn't sign that.””
The detective nodded.
“We're aware. The bank has identified inconsistencies in the signature.””
She lowered her voice.
“But there's a complication.””
“What complication?””
“The document was used to support a complaint alleging that you deliberately misappropriated your wife's funds before her death.””
Dad stared.
“Who filed the complaint?””
“Vanessa.””
I felt my chest tighten.
She wasn't merely trying to steal the remaining money.
She was preparing to blame Dad for everything.
Detective Harris continued.
“There's also an affidavit claiming you pressured Eleanor into signing over her assets before she died.””
Dad looked devastated.
“That's a lie.””
“We understand that. But we need to establish the facts.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Can I show you something?””
He opened his laptop.
It contained a series of emails between Vanessa and Michael.
Detective Harris examined them.
One message was dated two months earlier.
Vanessa had written:
Marcus will take the fall if anything goes wrong. Maya is young, and she won't understand the paperwork. Once the trust is transferred, we can disappear.
Another message followed.
Michael's reply:
What about Daniel?
Vanessa's response was chilling.
He is the insurance policy. If Marcus refuses to cooperate, we'll use the original company records.
Detective Harris looked up.
“Who is Daniel?””
Daniel raised his hand slightly.
“Me.””
The detective studied him.
“Why would they use you?””
Daniel looked at Dad.
“Because I'm Marcus's biological son.””
She closed the laptop.
“We need all of these records.””
Then she turned to me.
“Maya, I need you to understand something. This investigation is now much larger than financial fraud. We're examining possible evidence tampering and potential misconduct connected to Eleanor's medical records.””
I nodded.
“What happens next?””
“We locate Vanessa and Michael.””
As we walked toward the police vehicles, Dad's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A woman's voice came through.
Vanessa.
“Marcus, I think we need to talk.””
Dad's face hardened.
“Where are you?””
“Somewhere safe.””
“What do you want?””
“I want you to stop letting Daniel manipulate you.””
Daniel looked at Dad.
Vanessa continued.
“You have no idea what that boy has been doing.””
Dad glanced at him.
“What are you talking about?””
“Ask him about the original company records. Ask him why Lauren really disappeared.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Vanessa, stop lying.””
She laughed.
“Hello, Daniel.””
Dad put the phone on speaker.
“What did you do to Lauren?””
Vanessa's voice became colder.
“Nothing she didn't agree to.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You threatened her.””
“I gave her a choice.””
“What choice?””
Vanessa ignored him.
“Marcus, I can prove that Daniel was involved in the original transfers. He has been using you from the beginning.””
Dad's jaw tightened.
“Where are you?””
“Bring Maya to the old Bennett construction warehouse. Come alone.””
Detective Harris immediately signaled for silence.
Vanessa continued.
“If you want to know what happened to Eleanor, I'll tell you everything.””
Dad looked at me.
Then at Detective Harris.
He spoke slowly.
“I'm listening.””
Vanessa gave him one final instruction.
“Bring the blue box.””
The call disconnected.
Detective Harris immediately shook her head.
“We are not going to let you walk into an unknown location.””
Dad stared at the phone.
“She knows something.””
The detective nodded.
“And now we know where she wants us to look.””
She turned to her officers.
“Get the address of that warehouse. Nobody approaches it without a coordinated plan.””
Daniel looked toward the street.
“I know that building.””
Dad turned.
“How?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Because that's where my mother used to keep the original company documents.””
May you like
Then he added something none of us expected.
“It's also where Vanessa first met Eleanor.””
