Chapter 12: The Warehouse of Lies

The old Bennett construction warehouse stood on the edge of the industrial district.

Its windows were covered with dust. Rusted metal doors hung beneath a faded company sign.

Bennett Construction Group.

Dad stared at the building through the windshield.

“I haven't been here in fifteen years.””

Daniel sat beside him.

“My mother used to bring me here when I was little.””

I looked at him.

“You remember?””

“Some things.””

He pointed toward the second-floor office.

“She kept a desk up there. That's where she stored the original shareholder agreements.””

Detective Harris parked behind us.

Two additional police vehicles arrived shortly afterward.

“Listen carefully,” she said.

“Nobody enters the building until we confirm the situation.””

Dad nodded.

She looked at me.

“Maya, you stay with the officers.””

I opened my mouth.

“No.””

“Maya.””

“I've spent my entire life being told to stay out of things that involved my mother. I'm not doing that anymore.””

Detective Harris held my gaze.

“You can help us by staying safe.””

Dad placed a hand on my shoulder.

“She stays with you. I promise.””

I reluctantly agreed.

The officers approached the building.

A few minutes later, Detective Harris returned.

“It's empty.””

Daniel frowned.

“Impossible.””

“We found signs that someone was here recently. But nobody is inside.””

Dad looked toward the office.

“What about the documents?””

The detective nodded.

“There's a locked filing cabinet upstairs. We'll need a search warrant to examine everything properly.””

Daniel pulled a key from his pocket.

“My mother gave me this.””

Detective Harris examined it.

“Where did you get it?””

“Lauren sent it to me last month. She told me it was important.””

The detective nodded.

“Then we'll document it.””

Inside the warehouse, the air smelled of dust, oil, and damp cardboard.

The floor was scattered with broken pallets and old equipment.

We climbed a metal staircase to the second floor.

Daniel stopped outside a narrow office.

“This was her room.””

He inserted the key.

The cabinet opened.

Inside were dozens of folders.

Some were labeled with company names.

Others contained bank statements and old contracts.

Dad began searching.

I noticed a thick folder with my mother's name.

ELEANOR BENNETT.

I pulled it out.

Inside were copies of her investment records, trust documents, and a handwritten list of account numbers.

But there was something else.

A photograph.

It showed Mom sitting beside Lauren.

They were smiling.

Behind them stood a younger Vanessa.

I turned it over.

*September 2018. The day we agreed to protect the girls.*

I stared at the writing.

“The girls?””

Daniel came closer.

He examined the photograph.

“My mother had another daughter.””

Dad looked up.

“What?””

Daniel nodded.

“Lauren had a daughter before me. Her name was Sophie.””

I frowned.

“Where is she?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I don't know. She was adopted when she was very young.””

Dad picked up the photograph.

“Why would Eleanor be protecting her?””

Daniel opened another folder.

Inside was a legal document.

A family trust agreement.

The beneficiaries were listed as:

Maya Bennett.

Sophie Bennett.

I stared at the paper.

“Who is Sophie?””

Daniel looked at Dad.

“She's your daughter.””

Dad went completely still.

“What?””

Daniel explained carefully.

“Lauren had a daughter before she met you. When we found the old records, my mother told me that Sophie might have been connected to your family. She never explained everything.””

Dad sat down.

I read the document again.

The agreement had been established by my mother.

Not for me alone.

For another girl.

A girl named Sophie.

“Why would Mom leave money to someone she didn't know?”” I asked.

Daniel turned the page.

The answer was written in my mother's handwriting.

If Sophie is ever found, she deserves to know the truth. She is not responsible for the choices adults made.

I looked at Dad.

“Did Mom know Sophie?””

He shook his head.

“I don't understand.””

Detective Harris entered the room.

“What did you find?””

I handed her the agreement.

She examined it.

“Interesting.””

Dad pointed to the date.

“Eleanor established this trust two months before she died.””

Detective Harris nodded.

“Then we need to preserve it.””

Daniel was still searching through the cabinet.

Suddenly, he pulled out a small recorder.

It was an old digital voice recorder with a cracked screen.

“What's that?”” I asked.

Daniel pressed the power button.

The device turned on.

A list of recordings appeared.

One was labeled:

*VANESSA — ORIGINAL AGREEMENT.*

Detective Harris immediately asked him to stop.

“We need to document this before playing anything.””

She photographed the device and its serial number.

Then she connected it to a police laptop.

The recording began.

Vanessa's voice filled the room.

“I've already told you. Eleanor will sign the papers.””

A man's voice answered.

“What if she refuses?””

“Then we'll make sure Marcus believes she agreed.””

Dad closed his eyes.

The man spoke again.

“And the girl?””

“Maya won't know anything until she's eighteen.””

“What about Sophie?””

Vanessa laughed.

“She doesn't even know who she is.””

I felt a chill.

The recording continued.

Then Vanessa said:

“Once Eleanor is gone, Marcus will be too distracted to notice the transfers. Caleb can handle the company accounts. Michael will take care of the documents.””

Daniel looked at Dad.

“That's the same structure we found in the bank records.””

The recording ended.

Detective Harris carefully saved a copy.

“That's significant evidence.””

Dad leaned against the desk.

“Why would she plan all of this?””

I looked at the photograph of Mom and Lauren.

“Because Mom knew what she was doing.””

I opened another folder.

Inside was a handwritten letter from Eleanor.

It was addressed to Lauren.

If anything happens to me, please make sure Maya and Sophie are protected. Vanessa has discovered the trust arrangement, and I no longer believe she can be trusted.

My hands shook.

Then I noticed a second page.

It contained a phone number.

And a name.

*Sophie Miller.*

Below it was an address in another state.

I showed Detective Harris.

“We need to find her.””

The detective nodded.

“We'll have the appropriate officers verify the information.””

Dad stared at the name.

“Sophie.””

He whispered it like he was afraid the name might disappear.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

“It's Lauren.””

He answered immediately.

“Mom?””

His expression changed.

“What happened?””

He listened.

Then stood.

“Where are you?””

I watched his face.

“Don't go anywhere. We're coming.””

He ended the call.

Dad stepped forward.

“What's wrong?””

Daniel swallowed.

“My mother has been arrested.””

“For what?””

“Financial fraud.””

Dad looked confused.

“By whom?””

Daniel stared at the floor.

“Vanessa filed a complaint against her.””

Detective Harris immediately reached for her radio.

“Where is Lauren being held?””

Daniel gave her the location.

Then he looked at Dad.

“She says Vanessa has the original documents proving who really transferred the company shares.””

Dad's jaw tightened.

“Then we need to get them.””

Daniel shook his head.

“There's a problem.””

“What?””

“My mother says she already gave them to someone.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked at me.

His voice dropped.

“Sophie.””

I stared.

The girl named in my mother's trust.

The girl nobody had told me existed.

The girl who might hold the evidence that could save Lauren.

My phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

A message appeared.

*Maya, my name is Sophie Miller. I believe we're sisters. Don't trust the man who says he is helping you.*

I looked up at Daniel.

He was watching me.

Then another message arrived.

*And whatever you do, don't let your father see the original hospital recording.*

I slowly lowered my phone.

Because my father was standing directly beside me.

May you like

And he had just asked:

“Maya, who sent that message?””
