Chapter 3: The Name Hidden in the Report
The words remained on the screen.
*IF YOU ARE SEEING THIS, I FAILED TO STOP HIM.*
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The tribunal chamber, once filled with accusations and military authority, had become something else entirely.
A crime scene.
Elena stared at the document displayed in front of her.
The signature at the bottom was impossible.
*AUTHORIZED BY: SERGEANT NOAH REEVES.*
Her mind rejected it before she could even think.
Noah Reeves did not betray missions.
Noah Reeves did not manipulate reports.
Noah Reeves was the soldier who walked into gunfire when everyone else ran.
The man who carried wounded civilians through collapsing tunnels.
The man who had looked her in the eyes and said, “Nobody gets left behind.””
But the evidence was right there.
His name.
His authorization.
His code.
His voice.
All pointing in different directions.
Secretary Whitmore stepped closer to the screen.
“Who accessed this file?””
The technician’s hands moved quickly across the console.
“I’m checking now.””
General Cross suddenly spoke.
“This is exactly why Captain Vance should not be trusted.””
Everyone turned toward him.
Cross adjusted his uniform.
“The system has revealed classified information connected to her operation. She is the only surviving officer directly involved.””
Elena looked at him.
“You’re still doing this?””
Cross frowned.
“Doing what?””
“Trying to make me the enemy.””
His expression hardened.
“Because you might be.””
For a moment, Elena saw the old battlefield again.
The moment before an ambush.
The moment when everyone believed they knew who was friend and who was enemy.
She studied Cross carefully.
“You knew about the report.””
The room went quiet.
Cross’s eyes narrowed.
“Excuse me?””
“You knew there was a report.””
“No.””
“You knew there was a second investigation.””
“I know there are hundreds of classified investigations.””
Elena stepped forward.
“But you knew this one existed.””
General Hale interrupted.
“Captain, watch your accusations.””
She looked at him.
“No. You watch yours.””
Her voice was calm.
That made it more dangerous.
“You accused me of abandoning my unit. You accused me of leaking information. But the entire time, you knew there was evidence hidden from me.””
Hale’s face remained unreadable.
“That report is fake.””
The technician suddenly looked up.
“Sir.””
Everyone turned.
“What?””
The technician swallowed.
“The report is authentic.””
A silence followed.
Hale’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
The technician continued.
“The encryption signature belongs to the Defense Intelligence Network. The file was created using internal military systems.””
Whitmore looked at Hale.
“Then why was Captain Vance never shown this?””
Nobody answered.
Elena already knew.
Because someone wanted her blamed.
Someone needed the world to believe the mission failed because of her.
A sudden sound came from the speakers.
Static.
Then Noah’s voice returned.
“Captain Vance.””
Everyone looked up.
The transmission was unstable.
“Noah?””
His voice was weaker now.
“Listen carefully.””
Elena moved toward the microphone.
“Where are you?””
A pause.
Then:
“Somewhere underground.””
The answer made her chest tighten.
“Still?””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
Another pause.
“Twenty-six months.””
The room reacted instantly.
Twenty-six months.
That meant Noah had survived the entire time.
Hidden.
Alone.
Waiting.
Whitmore grabbed the microphone.
“Sergeant Reeves, this is Secretary Whitmore. Identify your location.””
Static.
Then Noah answered.
“I can’t.””
“Why?””
“Because if I tell you, they’ll know I’m alive.””
Elena looked around the room.
“They?””
Noah didn’t answer immediately.
That silence frightened her more than anything.
Finally, he spoke.
“The people who buried Silent Horizon.””
General Hale stepped toward the console.
“This transmission is fabricated.””
Noah’s voice changed.
“You’re still there, aren’t you, Marcus?””
The entire room froze.
Hale stopped.
Elena looked at him.
Noah continued.
“You always hated that I kept records.””
General Hale’s face went pale.
Whitmore slowly turned.
“Marcus?””
Hale looked toward him.
“Secretary, this is manipulation.””
But Noah interrupted.
“Ask him about the second extraction team.””
Nobody spoke.
Elena felt the air leave her lungs.
Second extraction team?
There had been no mention of another team.
Not in the mission briefing.
Not in the reports.
Not anywhere.
Whitmore looked at Hale.
“What second team?””
Hale remained silent.
That was his answer.
Elena stared at him.
“You sent another unit?””
Hale’s jaw tightened.
“It was classified.””
“You sent them after us?””
“No.””
“Then why didn’t they come?””
Silence.
The silence of someone who knew there was no safe answer.
Whitmore’s voice became colder.
“General Hale.””
Hale looked at him.
“Explain.””
The general straightened.
“The second team was an intelligence operation.””
Elena laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
“So while we were fighting to survive, you had another team watching?””
“It was not a rescue operation.””
“Then what was it?””
Hale said nothing.
Noah answered for him.
“They were there to recover something.””
Elena looked at the speaker.
“What?””
A pause.
“The evidence.””
The room went still.
Noah continued.
“Silent Horizon was never about rescuing hostages.””
The same words.
The same terrible truth.
“The hostages were witnesses.””
Elena’s face tightened.
“To what?””
Noah’s voice became quieter.
“To a military network that was selling operations.””
Nobody spoke.
“Coordinates. Equipment movements. Agent identities.””
Whitmore looked horrified.
“How long?””
“Years.””
The answer hung in the room.
General Cross suddenly moved toward the door.
The guards immediately raised their weapons.
“Stay where you are.””
Cross looked angry.
“This is absurd.””
Whitmore watched him carefully.
“Why were you trying to leave?””
“I wasn’t.””
“You walked toward a locked door.””
Cross looked at the door.
Then back at Whitmore.
“You’re making a mistake.””
Elena noticed something.
A small mark on his wrist.
A scar.
She remembered it.
Not from today.
From the mission.
She had seen it inside the underground facility.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She pointed at Cross.
“You were there.””
Cross froze.
Elena stepped closer.
“Not at the tribunal. At the facility.””
His face changed.
“You’re confused.””
“No.””
Her voice sharpened.
“I saw you.””
The room erupted.
Whitmore looked between them.
“General Cross, were you present during Silent Horizon?””
Cross said nothing.
Elena continued.
“You weren’t with the command team.””
Her memory returned.
A shadow in the smoke.
A soldier standing near the locked doors.
A voice giving orders.
A voice she could not place.
“You were inside the facility.””
Cross’s expression became unreadable.
Then he smiled.
A small, cold smile.
The same kind of smile she had seen from people who believed they had already won.
“Captain Vance.””
He looked at her.
“You remember more than you should.””
The guards raised their weapons higher.
Whitmore stepped forward.
“What does that mean?””
Cross looked around the room.
At the sealed doors.
At the armed guards.
At the screen.
Then he looked at Elena.
“You really think Noah Reeves saved you?””
Elena said nothing.
Cross laughed quietly.
“He didn’t save you.””
The lights flickered.
The security system began flashing again.
Another message appeared.
Not from Noah.
Not from the glove.
From the tribunal’s own network.
*EMERGENCY ARCHIVE ACCESSED.*
A file opened.
A video.
Recorded two years earlier.
The timestamp showed the night of Silent Horizon.
Everyone watched as the screen filled with a grainy image from a hidden camera.
A dark hallway.
A military officer walking through smoke.
Elena leaned closer.
She recognized the uniform.
She recognized the voice.
The officer stopped beside the locked hostage room.
And said:
“Begin the cleanup.””
Elena felt her heartbeat stop.
Because the person in the video turned toward the camera.
And the face became clear.
It was someone she had trusted.
Someone whose orders she had followed.
Someone who had sent her into the mission.
The name appeared beneath the recording.
*COMMANDER ADRIAN VALE.*
Noah’s voice came through the speakers one last time.
“Elena…”
The transmission broke.
“Don’t let him reach you.””
The screen went black.
May you like
Then a final alert appeared.
*COMMANDER VALE HAS ENTERED THE BUILDING.*
