Chapter 5: The Enemy Wearing Her Name

The accusation appeared on the screen.

*SHE IS NOT THE SURVIVOR. SHE IS THE REASON THEY DIED.*

Nobody looked at Elena.

Not immediately.

That was the worst part.

For years, Elena had learned how people reacted when they doubted her.

Anger.

Suspicion.

Disbelief.

But this was different.

This was fear.

Because the message had come from her own military identification.

Her own device.

Her own name.

Secretary Whitmore slowly turned toward her.

“Captain Vance.””

Elena looked at the screen.

“I didn’t send that.””

The words came out quietly.

Too quietly.

General Cross gave a bitter laugh.

“Of course you didn’t.””

Elena turned toward him.

“What does that mean?””

Cross folded his arms.

“It means this entire situation has become exactly what I warned about.””

“You warned everyone I was guilty.””

“I warned everyone that you were connected to something you didn’t understand.””

Elena stared at him.

“And now?””

Cross looked at the message.

“Now I’m wondering if you understand more than you claim.””

The guards shifted.

Not toward Cross.

Toward Elena.

She noticed.

Everyone noticed.

The room had changed again.

Minutes earlier, she had been the soldier who might expose a conspiracy.

Now she was the possible source of it.

Commander Adrian Vale stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

Vale’s voice was firm.

“Do not make the same mistake twice.””

Whitmore watched him carefully.

“What mistake?””

“Believing the first piece of evidence you see.””

Vale pointed at the screen.

“That message was designed to create exactly this reaction.””

General Hale frowned.

“You expect us to believe this is a coincidence?””

“No.””

Vale looked at Elena.

“I expect you to believe someone planned it.””

Elena studied him.

For two years, she had imagined the day she would see Adrian Vale again.

She imagined anger.

Questions.

A confrontation.

She never imagined standing beside him.

Especially not while being accused of being the enemy.

The technician continued working.

“Sir, I’m tracing the device.””

Whitmore nodded.

“Do it.””

The technician’s fingers moved quickly.

A few seconds passed.

Then he froze.

“What?””

Whitmore stepped closer.

The technician looked uncomfortable.

“The message did come from Captain Vance’s device.””

General Hale immediately spoke.

“There you have it.””

Vale ignored him.

“Continue.””

The technician swallowed.

“But…”

Everyone waited.

“There is something strange.””

“What?””

“The device authentication is correct.””

Elena felt her stomach tighten.

“Meaning?””

The technician looked at her.

“Meaning the system believes you sent it.””

“But I didn’t.””

“I know.””

He turned back to the screen.

“Because there’s another problem.””

Whitmore leaned forward.

“What problem?””

The technician enlarged the data.

“The message was sent before Captain Vance entered the building.””

Silence.

Elena looked confused.

“What?””

“The timestamp shows the message originated eighteen minutes before the tribunal began.””

General Cross stopped smiling.

Hale’s expression changed.

Whitmore looked at Elena.

“Where were you eighteen minutes before the hearing?””

Elena answered immediately.

“In military transport.””

“Who was with you?””

“Two security officers.””

“Anyone else?””

She thought.

“No.””

Vale’s eyes narrowed.

“Check the transport logs.””

The technician did.

A few moments later, his face became serious.

“There is a problem.””

“What now?””

“The transport record was altered.””

Whitmore looked at him.

“By who?””

The technician shook his head.

“I can’t tell.””

“Try.””

“I mean I literally can’t tell.””

He pointed at the screen.

“The alteration was made using a clearance level above mine.””

The room became tense.

Above his clearance.

There were not many people who had that authority.

Elena looked around.

Someone powerful had been moving pieces before she even arrived.

Vale turned toward her.

“Captain, what happened after you were transported here?””

Elena frowned.

“Nothing.””

“Think carefully.””

She closed her eyes.

The drive.

The guards.

The elevator.

The hallway.

Then—

A memory surfaced.

The transport vehicle had stopped.

Only for a moment.

A delay.

She had assumed it was traffic.

But now…

“There was a stop.””

Everyone looked at her.

Vale stepped closer.

“Where?””

“Underground entrance three.””

General Hale immediately reacted.

“That area is restricted.””

Elena looked at him.

“Yes.””

His reaction was too fast.

Too specific.

Vale noticed too.

“Why would a tribunal prisoner be taken near a restricted entrance?””

Nobody answered.

Elena looked at Hale.

“You knew.””

Hale remained silent.

“What was down there?””

Cross stepped in.

“Enough.””

Elena turned.

“You’re afraid of that question.””

Cross’s expression hardened.

“You have no idea what you’re involved in.””

“No.””

She looked at him.

“But you do.””

Before Cross could answer, the lights flickered.

The security system activated again.

A new file appeared.

Not a warning.

A recording.

The title appeared:

*TRANSPORT CAMERA — CAPTAIN VANCE TRANSFER*

Everyone moved closer.

The video began.

A military vehicle stopped inside the underground facility.

The timestamp matched Elena’s memory.

The camera angle showed Elena sitting in the back, restrained.

Two guards stood beside her.

Then the vehicle door opened.

A figure entered.

The video quality was poor.

The face was hidden.

But the uniform was visible.

A black intelligence insignia.

The figure leaned toward Elena.

Everyone watched as the person removed something from their pocket.

A small device.

Then placed it inside Elena’s damaged glove.

Elena stared at the screen.

“I never saw that.””

Vale looked at her.

“Because you were unconscious.””

The room turned toward him.

Elena’s face changed.

“What?””

Vale looked uncomfortable.

“When you were recovered from the facility, you had internal injuries.””

“No.””

“You don’t remember the entire extraction.””

Elena shook her head.

“I remember.””

“You remember waking up.””

A pause.

“But not everything before.””

Elena felt cold.

Because he was right.

She remembered the mountain.

The helicopter.

The hospital lights.

But there was a gap.

A missing piece.

The video continued.

The mysterious figure placed the device inside her glove.

Then leaned closer.

The audio was damaged.

The technician enhanced it.

Static.

A whisper.

Then:

“Make sure she gets blamed.””

The room froze.

Elena stared.

The figure stepped back.

And for one second, the camera captured the face.

Only one second.

But enough.

Enough for Elena to recognize the person.

Enough for Whitmore to understand.

Enough for everyone.

The person in the video was not a stranger.

It was someone who had been standing inside the tribunal all along.

General Marcus Hale.

The room exploded.

Guards immediately pointed their weapons.

Hale stepped back.

“That recording is fabricated.””

Whitmore’s expression was cold.

“You expect us to believe that?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because if I wanted Captain Vance blamed, I would not leave evidence behind.””

Vale looked at him.

“That’s exactly what you would do.””

Hale turned.

“Careful, Commander.””

“No.””

Vale’s voice was calm.

“You made one mistake.””

Everyone watched him.

“You thought Elena was the only person who survived.””

Hale’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But it was enough.

Elena saw it.

The fear.

The same fear she had seen when Noah’s code appeared.

Hale looked at Vale.

“You should have stayed dead.””

The room went silent.

Whitmore immediately turned.

“What did you say?””

Hale realized what he had revealed.

Too late.

Elena stared at him.

“You knew Noah was alive.””

Hale said nothing.

“You knew.””

The general’s silence was an answer.

Then every screen in the room suddenly changed.

The tribunal system displayed a new message.

Not from Elena.

Not from Noah.

Not from Vale.

A live connection.

A video feed opened.

A dark room appeared.

Someone sat inside.

A person Elena had not seen in two years.

Someone who should not have been alive.

Noah Reeves looked into the camera.

His face was older.

Exhausted.

But alive.

And the first words he spoke were:

“Elena… I need you to hear the truth before they kill me.””

He looked directly at the screen.

“The person who betrayed Silent Horizon…”

A pause.

His eyes moved.

“…was not General Hale.””

The room froze.

Noah continued:

“It was the person who created the mission.””

The video glitched.

Then his final words appeared:

“Captain Vance… your commander was never trying to save those hostages.””

The screen went black.

May you like

And one name appeared.

*COMMANDER ADRIAN VALE.*
