Chapter 10: The Daughter Who Was Never Buried
For seventeen years, I had believed I had one daughter.
Now, standing inside a hidden hospital room with my dead wife's voice still echoing in my ears, I was being told that another child might have been stolen from us at birth.
I looked at the passport in Agent Morgan's hand.
Elena Harris.
The photograph showed a woman with Patricia's face, Patricia's eyes, and Patricia's unmistakable crescent-shaped scar beneath her left ear.
Except Patricia had never had that scar.
"How can someone be listed as deceased and still be walking around?"" I asked.
Morgan slipped the passport into an evidence bag.
"People disappear from official records for all kinds of reasons. Sometimes it's fraud. Sometimes it's witness protection. Sometimes someone deliberately creates a false death certificate.""
"And sometimes?""
She looked at me.
"Sometimes a dead person is the most useful identity a criminal can have.""
I thought about the woman in the security footage, handing Whitmore a black case.
I thought about the photograph of Rachel holding a newborn.
And I thought about Ava's voice.
Mom told me I had a twin sister.
I pulled out my phone and called her back.
The number rang once.
Then a recorded message announced that the subscriber was unavailable.
I tried again.
Nothing.
"She's alive," I said, more to myself than to Morgan.
"She called me. She wouldn't have called if she thought there was no chance of getting out.""
Morgan nodded, but her attention had shifted to the folder on the desk.
"Daniel, look at this.""
She held up a birth record recovered from the metal box.
Two children had been born at St. Catherine's Hospital on October 14, seventeen years earlier.
*AVA DAWSON — 11:42 P.M.*
*ELENA DAWSON — 11:47 P.M.*
Both records listed me as the father and Rachel as the mother.
But the second certificate had been stamped with a red seal.
*INFANT DEATH — VERIFIED.*
I stared at the page.
"No.""
Morgan turned it over.
The reverse side contained a handwritten note.
Mother informed of stillbirth. Father not present. Transfer authorized by Dr. Whitmore.
I gripped the desk.
"I was there when Ava was born.""
"Where?""
"St. Catherine's. Rachel went into labor early. I arrived at the hospital around ten that night.""
I could almost see the corridor again. The vending machine that wouldn't accept my dollar. Rachel's sister bringing a blanket. The nurse who had told me to wait outside while they prepared the delivery room.
I remembered hearing a baby cry.
Then another.
I had always assumed the second cry came from another room.
"Did anyone tell you there were twins?"" Morgan asked.
"No.""
"Did you see both babies?""
I closed my eyes.
A nurse had brought me a small bundle wrapped in a yellow blanket. Rachel had been exhausted, smiling through tears.
She had whispered, "She's perfect, Daniel.""
I remembered kissing the baby's forehead.
Then someone had taken her away to check her breathing.
Had there been another bundle?
Another cry?
Another child I had never held?
"I don't know," I whispered.
Morgan studied the birth records.
"These documents suggest the second baby survived long enough to receive a name. That doesn't prove what happened afterward, but it gives us a place to start.""
I looked at the date.
October 14.
The same date written on the bracelet.
The same date Rachel had been murdered.
"What if the kidnapping isn't about the financial records?"" I asked.
Morgan looked up.
"What do you mean?""
"What if Whitmore took Ava because she discovered the truth about her sister? What if the evidence is only one part of it?""
Morgan's phone rang before she could answer.
She listened, her expression growing increasingly grim.
"Understood. Secure the entrance. Nobody leaves until the forensic team arrives.""
She ended the call.
"What happened?""
"The storage facility has been cleared. The woman identified as Elena Harris escaped through a service exit before the team arrived.""
"Did she leave anything?""
"Yes.""
Morgan opened a photograph on her phone.
A black case lay on the floor of an empty office.
Inside it were medical records, several passports, and a list of names.
One name had been circled in red.
*AVA DAWSON.*
Beneath it was a second name.
*ELENA DAWSON — STATUS: ACTIVE.*
I stared at the screen.
"They've been tracking both girls.""
"Apparently.""
"Why?""
Morgan didn't answer immediately.
Then she pulled a second document from the case photograph.
It was a medical report dated seventeen years earlier.
The heading read:
*NEONATAL SEPARATION PROTOCOL — PRIVATE PLACEMENT PROGRAM.*
My stomach turned.
"This wasn't a normal hospital procedure.""
"No," Morgan said quietly.
"It wasn't.""
She scanned the report.
"According to this, certain newborns were transferred to private facilities under false medical identities. The official explanation was that the babies required specialized care.""
"And the parents?""
"In some cases, they were told their children had died.""
I thought of Rachel sitting in the hospital bed, clutching Ava while I brought her ice chips.
Had she known?
Had she spent seventeen years believing one of her daughters was dead?
Or had someone kept the truth from her, too?
A faint sound came from the corridor.
Footsteps.
Morgan raised her weapon.
"FBI! Identify yourself!""
A woman stepped through the doorway with both hands raised.
Patricia.
Her hair was disheveled, and a deep cut ran across her forehead. She wore a bloodstained coat, and her left hand was wrapped in a towel.
"Don't shoot," she gasped.
"Please.""
I rushed toward her.
"Where's Ava?""
Patricia flinched at my voice.
"I don't know.""
I grabbed her shoulders.
"Don't lie to me!""
Morgan pulled me away.
"Daniel, let her speak.""
Patricia sank into a chair.
"Elena took Ava. Whitmore gave her instructions to move the girl to a secondary location.""
"Why would Elena help him?""
"Because she thinks she's protecting her daughter.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
Patricia began to cry.
"Elena gave birth to a child seventeen years ago. A girl. She was told the baby died, too. But she later discovered that the child had been placed with another family.""
"Which family?""
Patricia looked directly at me.
"Yours.""
The words landed like a physical blow.
I backed away.
"No.""
"Rachel discovered the truth when Ava was four. She found inconsistencies in the hospital records and hired a private investigator. When she learned Elena was still alive, she tried to arrange a meeting.""
"Why didn't she tell me?""
"Because Elena had been threatened. They told her that if she contacted you, Ava would be taken away.""
I struggled to breathe.
"You're saying Ava isn't Rachel's biological daughter?""
Patricia shook her head.
"No. Ava is your biological daughter. But Elena carried her.""
I stared at her.
"Then who was Rachel's baby?""
Patricia's face crumpled.
"Elena's daughter. The other twin.""
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Rachel had raised a child she believed was hers.
Elena had been told her daughter was dead.
And the two women had somehow been connected by a lie that lasted seventeen years.
"Where is Rachel's biological daughter now?"" I asked.
Patricia looked at the floor.
"She's been living under another name.""
"What name?""
Patricia lifted her eyes.
"Ava.""
My heart stopped.
She shook her head quickly.
"No. Not your Ava. The other girl. The one who was taken from Elena.""
Morgan stepped closer.
"What's her current identity?""
Patricia whispered a name.
"Emily Hart.""
I had never heard it before.
But Morgan had.
She went completely still.
"Emily Hart was reported missing from a foster home six years ago.""
Patricia nodded.
"Whitmore moved her between facilities. He wanted to keep the two girls separated until they were old enough to be useful.""
"Useful for what?"" I demanded.
Patricia looked at the birth records.
"Because one of them carries the original evidence in her medical history. Rachel knew it. She believed the girls were the only people who could prove what happened at St. Catherine's.""
I stared at the two birth certificates.
Ava Dawson.
Elena Dawson.
Two names.
Two lives.
One family torn apart before either child had taken her first breath.
My phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
A text appeared.
*YOU HAVE ONE DAUGHTER IN YOUR HOUSE OF MEMORIES AND ANOTHER IN OUR HANDS. CHOOSE WHICH ONE YOU WANT TO SAVE.*
A second message followed.
A photograph of a teenage girl standing beside Ava.
They looked almost identical.
The same eyes.
The same chin.
The same small dimple in the left cheek.
But the girl beside Ava wore a hospital bracelet.
And on it was a name.
*EMILY HART.*
