Chapter 14: The Last Signature
The envelope trembled in Elena's hand.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Eleanor lay against the wall, clutching her wounded shoulder. Morgan stood over her with her weapon trained on the floor beside her. Ava held Emily's hand, and I stood between my daughter and the woman who had helped destroy our family.
"What did Eleanor plan to do to Ava?"" I asked.
Elena swallowed.
"She wanted to use her to complete the program.""
"What program?""
"The final stage of the medical trials. Whitmore had discovered that the drug used on you could create severe memory disruption without leaving obvious signs of poisoning. They believed it could be used to make people confess to things they hadn't done, sign documents they didn't understand, and become unreliable witnesses.""
I thought of the money transfers, the forged signatures, and the hospital footage.
"They were testing it on me.""
"Yes.""
"And Rachel?""
"Rachel discovered that the drug was being used to control you. She also discovered that Whitmore intended to test a stronger version on Ava.""
Ava's grip tightened around Emily's hand.
"Why me?""
Elena looked at her with unbearable sadness.
"Because you had inherited a rare metabolic trait from your biological mother. The researchers believed it made you unusually responsive to the compound.""
Emily looked confused.
"Her biological mother?""
Elena nodded.
"Me.""
The room went silent.
Ava stared at Elena.
"You carried me.""
"Yes.""
"And Emily?""
Elena turned toward the other girl.
"Rachel was your biological mother.""
Emily's face crumpled.
"She knew about me?""
"She found you when you were four. She visited you whenever she could. She wanted to take you home, but Eleanor threatened to have you transferred somewhere she would never find you.""
Emily began to cry.
"Why didn't she tell me?""
"She tried. But every time she came close to exposing the truth, Eleanor intervened. Rachel was terrified that if she moved too quickly, both of you would disappear.""
I thought about my wife visiting a hidden clinic, holding a little girl who had her eyes.
All those nights when Rachel had returned home exhausted, saying she needed to work late.
All those moments when she had stared at Ava with a sadness I couldn't understand.
She hadn't been keeping a secret because she didn't trust me.
She had been trying to protect two daughters from her own mother.
"Why did you help Eleanor?"" I asked Elena.
She looked down at the case.
"Because she promised to reunite me with my children. She told me Rachel had stolen one and abandoned the other. I believed her for years.""
"And when did you learn the truth?""
"Three weeks ago, when I found a recording Rachel had hidden.""
She opened the envelope.
Inside was a small memory card and a handwritten note.
The note was addressed to me.
Daniel, if you're reading this, then the people who separated our daughters have finally run out of places to hide. I need you to understand that I never chose between them. I fought for both. If I failed, it was because I believed I could protect everyone by keeping the truth quiet.
My eyes burned.
I read the final lines.
The original authorization is not a document. It is a recording. The paper was only a decoy. The truth is in the hands of the person who remembers the night I died.
I looked at Ava.
She went pale.
"The bracelet," she whispered.
Elena nodded.
"Rachel recorded everything on the memory card hidden inside the clasp. She gave it to Ava because she knew Eleanor would never suspect a child was carrying the evidence.""
I stared at the silver bracelet on Ava's wrist.
"Why didn't you tell us sooner?""
"Because I didn't know where the recording was. I thought Eleanor had destroyed it. Then Ava told me about the bracelet.""
Morgan stepped forward.
"Where is the memory card now?""
Ava hesitated.
Then she unclasped the bracelet.
The tiny compartment was empty.
My heart sank.
"Eleanor took it," Ava whispered.
"When she brought us here, she searched my bag and found the bracelet. She must have removed the card.""
Eleanor laughed weakly from the floor.
"You always were a clever girl, Ava. Unfortunately, you learned too late.""
Morgan crouched beside her.
"Where is the card?""
Eleanor closed her eyes.
"Somewhere you'll never find it.""
Morgan's radio crackled.
"Agent Morgan, we have a vehicle approaching the north gate. Male driver, no plates. Requesting instructions.""
Morgan looked toward the window.
"Hold position. Do not engage unless the driver attempts to breach the perimeter.""
Eleanor's smile widened.
"He's here.""
"Who?"" I demanded.
She looked at me.
"The man who actually administered the injection.""
I felt my blood turn cold.
"Whitmore?""
"No.""
She tilted her head toward the staircase.
"Mark.""
For a moment, I couldn't understand.
Mark had been shot at the research center. He had helped us uncover the hidden rooms. He had confessed to knowing Rachel was alive for eleven minutes after the injection.
He had bled while trying to save Ava.
"You said he was injured," I whispered.
Morgan's expression changed.
"We never confirmed his condition after he disappeared from the ambulance.""
Eleanor laughed again.
"Mark has always been very good at appearing to be the victim.""
A door slammed downstairs.
Footsteps approached.
Then Mark Ellison appeared at the top of the staircase, one hand pressed against his bandaged side.
His face was pale, but he was standing.
In his other hand, he held a small black device.
"Put your weapons down," he said.
Morgan raised her gun.
"Mark, don't move.""
He looked at me.
"I'm sorry, Daniel.""
I stared at him.
"You told me you didn't know what was in the bottle.""
"I didn't.""
"You said you thought it was medicine.""
"I did.""
"Then why did Eleanor say you administered the injection?""
Mark's eyes filled with tears.
"Because I was there when Rachel died.""
He placed the device on the railing.
A small red light blinked.
"That's a remote trigger," Morgan warned.
"Nobody move.""
Mark looked at Ava.
"Your mother made me promise to protect you. I failed her. I've been trying to fix it ever since.""
"By lying to my father?"" Ava demanded.
Mark flinched.
"I was afraid.""
"So was Mom!""
Her words echoed through the room.
Mark lowered his head.
"You're right.""
He looked at me.
"Rachel had discovered the research trial and planned to expose it. Eleanor knew the evidence would destroy her. She ordered Whitmore to give you the compound, then forged the authorization to make it look like you'd approved Rachel's treatment.""
"Why did you help?""
"Because my brother was involved in the financial side of the program. Eleanor threatened to destroy him and his family. She told me if I cooperated, Rachel would receive legitimate treatment.""
I stared at him.
"And when you realized what she was doing?""
"It was too late.""
Mark's voice broke.
"I tried to stop her. I fought with Whitmore in the corridor. He hit me, and I went down. By the time I got back into the room, Rachel was dying.""
"You let me believe I killed her.""
"I thought if you remembered what happened, Eleanor would kill you too. She had already started using the drug on you. You couldn't remember what she'd made you sign, and I believed keeping you confused was the only way to keep you alive.""
I wanted to hit him.
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I asked the question that had haunted me for three years.
"Was Rachel conscious when you returned?""
Mark nodded.
"For a few seconds.""
"What did she say?""
He looked at Ava.
"She asked me to protect her daughters.""
My daughter began to cry.
Mark continued.
"Then she looked at Eleanor and said, 'You won't get away with this.'' Eleanor leaned over her and whispered something I couldn't hear.""
"What?""
Mark's voice dropped.
"She said, 'They'll never know which daughter was meant to die.''"
The words froze the room.
I looked at Eleanor.
She was no longer smiling.
Morgan moved toward Mark.
"Put the device down and step away from the railing.""
Mark shook his head.
"I can't.""
"Mark, don't make this worse.""
He looked at me one last time.
"Daniel, the recording isn't on the memory card. Rachel made a second copy. She hid it somewhere only you would know.""
I stared at him.
"Where?""
Mark opened his mouth.
A gunshot shattered the window.
He jerked backward.
Blood spread across his chest.
Ava screamed.
Morgan fired toward the window as the tactical team surged into the room.
Mark collapsed against the railing, his hand reaching for me.
I caught him before he fell.
"Where is it?"" I demanded.
His lips moved.
I leaned closer.
"The piano," he whispered.
"But not the one in your house.""
His eyes drifted toward the floor.
"Rachel knew you'd look there first.""
Then he went still.
For one terrible second, I thought he was dead.
Morgan pressed two fingers to his neck.
"He's alive. Get medical support!""
As the team secured the room, I looked through the shattered window.
A figure was disappearing into the trees.
Not Whitmore.
Not Eleanor.
Someone wearing a hospital uniform.
Someone who had been inside the house before the shooting.
My phone buzzed.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
*THE RECORDING IS SAFE. BUT IF YOU PLAY IT, YOU'LL LEARN WHY RACHEL CHOSE EMILY TO DIE.*
I stared at the words.
Then I looked at Emily.
She stood beside Ava, trembling.
"Mr. Dawson," she whispered, "there's something I never told anyone.""
I turned toward her.
"When Rachel visited me at the clinic, she gave me a name. She said if anything happened to her, I should find the man who raised Ava.""
"Why?""
Emily reached into her pocket and pulled out a folded photograph.
It showed Rachel holding two newborn babies.
On the back, in her handwriting, were seven words.
One daughter is mine. The other is his.
I stared at the photograph.
Because beneath the words, Rachel had written a name.
Not Daniel Dawson.
Not Mark Ellison.
*THOMAS REED.*
