Chapter 10: The Name They Stole

The darkness swallowed the basement.

Nia stood frozen with the envelope in her hands.

Somewhere behind her, Vanessa whispered, “Nia…”

“No.””

Nia's voice was steady now.

“Don't tell me to stop.””

A phone flashlight snapped on.

David stood beside Angela, illuminating the basement in a narrow white beam.

The crib was still there.

The cabinet.

The dusty concrete floor.

And the envelope in Nia's hands.

She stared at the name again.

*AVA CARTER.*

Her fingers trembled against the seal.

Angela stepped closer.

“I need to tell you something before you open it.””

Nia looked at her.

“What?””

Angela swallowed.

“You weren't supposed to be Ava.””

Nia frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa began crying.

Angela continued.

“You had a twin sister.””

Nia's eyes widened.

“Ava?””

Angela nodded.

“Ava was born first.””

Nia looked toward the crib.

“Then who am I?””

Angela's face crumpled.

“You're Nia.””

“I know that.””

“No.””

Angela shook her head.

“You're Nia because we changed your name.””

Nia stared at her.

“Why?””

Angela took a shaky breath.

“Because after you and Ava were born, your father discovered that someone had been trying to take control of your grandfather's estate.””

David stepped forward.

“Thomas wasn't acting alone.””

Nia looked at him.

“Who was?””

Angela pointed toward the envelope.

“Your grandfather's attorney.””

Nia remembered Thomas's warning.

Your grandfather's lawyer.

She looked down at the envelope.

“Where is Ava?””

Angela's silence answered before her words did.

“We don't know.””

Nia's heart sank.

“What do you mean you don't know?””

“The night you were born, Ava was taken.””

“By who?””

“We thought Thomas had taken her.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I didn't.””

Nia turned toward her.

“You knew she existed.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I was told one baby was being transferred to me.””

“One baby?””

Vanessa looked at the crib.

“I thought you were the only one.””

Nia's face tightened.

“Then why did you have a crib for Ava?””

Vanessa wiped her tears.

“Because someone brought it here.””

“Who?””

Vanessa stared at the floor.

“I don't know.””

David moved closer.

“You do.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

David's voice softened.

“Vanessa.””

She finally looked at him.

“The night I brought Nia home, there was another envelope.””

Nia whispered, “What was inside?””

“A birth certificate.””

“Whose?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Ava's.””

The room went silent.

Nia looked at the sealed envelope.

“Then why is it here?””

Vanessa whispered, “Because I was told never to open it.””

Nia pulled the seal apart.

The paper inside unfolded slowly.

Her eyes moved across the first page.

A birth record.

Two names.

Two birth times.

Two babies.

*Ava Carter — 11:42 p.m.*

*Nia Carter — 11:47 p.m.*

Nia covered her mouth.

“We were five minutes apart.””

Angela nodded.

“Yes.””

Nia's eyes filled with tears.

“Why did you separate us?””

Angela began crying.

“I didn't.””

Nia looked at her.

“Then who did?””

Angela pointed toward the second page.

“There.””

Nia lowered her eyes.

A custody order.

A handwritten amendment.

And at the bottom—

a signature.

Thomas Carter.

But beside it was another signature.

*Eleanor Brooks.*

Nia stared.

“Who is Eleanor Brooks?””

Angela answered quietly.

“Your grandfather's attorney.””

Nia looked at the document again.

“The lawyer.””

David nodded.

“She controlled the estate paperwork.””

Nia's breathing quickened.

“She took Ava.””

Angela shook her head.

“She took something worse.””

“What?””

“She took the evidence.””

Nia looked confused.

“What evidence?””

Angela reached for the final page.

Nia let her take it.

Angela unfolded it.

Her hands shook.

“This was found six months ago.””

Nia looked at the page.

It was a medical record.

At the bottom was a note.

*Patient transferred under emergency guardianship.*

Then another line.

*Infant Ava Carter — status: living.*

Nia's breath stopped.

“She was alive.””

Angela nodded.

“When?””

“Six months ago.””

Nia stared at her mother.

“You knew?””

“I found out six months ago.””

“And you didn't tell me?””

“I didn't know where she was.””

“You could have told me!””

“I was afraid.””

“Everyone is always afraid!””

Nia's voice echoed through the basement.

She wiped her tears.

“You were afraid, Vanessa was afraid, David was afraid…”

She looked at the documents.

“And I was the one living inside the lie.””

David stepped closer.

“I should have told you when I found the file.””

Nia looked at him.

“Yes.””

“I was wrong.””

“Yes.””

“I thought I could protect you.””

“You couldn't.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

Nia looked back at the birth record.

Then she noticed something handwritten at the bottom.

A phone number.

Her fingers tightened.

“What's this?””

Angela stared.

“I don't know.””

Nia pulled out her phone.

She dialed.

The call rang once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then someone answered.

A woman's voice.

“Hello?””

Nia couldn't speak.

The woman said, “Hello?””

Nia finally whispered.

“My name is Nia Carter.””

Silence.

Then a sharp inhale.

The woman's voice trembled.

“Where did you get this number?””

Nia looked at the birth certificate.

“I found your name.””

“What name?””

Nia swallowed.

“Ava.””

The line went silent.

Angela covered her mouth.

David's eyes filled with tears.

Nia whispered, “Are you my sister?””

The woman began crying.

“Yes.””

Nia closed her eyes.

For eighteen years, she had believed she was alone.

Now a stranger was breathing on the other end of the phone with the same blood running through her veins.

“I thought you were dead,” Nia whispered.

“I thought you were.””

“Who told you?””

Ava hesitated.

“Eleanor.””

Nia's eyes opened.

“The lawyer?””

“Yes.””

“She told me our mother abandoned me.””

Nia looked at Angela.

“She told me Dad died.””

Ava's voice cracked.

“She told me everyone had moved on.””

Nia sat on the basement floor.

None of the lies made sense anymore.

Then Ava said something that made her blood run cold.

“Nia…”

“What?””

“I need you to listen carefully.””

Nia stood.

“Okay.””

“Eleanor didn't take me.””

“Then who did?””

Ava breathed shakily.

“Your grandfather did.””

Nia stared at Angela.

“What?””

Ava continued.

“He knew the estate would be divided between us.””

“Why would he separate his own children?””

“Because he didn't trust your father.””

Nia's mind raced.

“Then why did he hide you?””

Ava was silent for several seconds.

Then she whispered:

“Because one of us wasn't supposed to inherit anything.””

Nia looked at the birth certificate.

“Which one?””

Ava answered.

“You.””

Nia's blood ran cold.

“Why?””

“Because you're not just your father's daughter.””

“What does that mean?””

Ava's voice broke.

“You're the child your grandfather was trying to protect.””

Nia looked at the final page.

A second photograph had been clipped behind it.

She pulled it free.

It showed her grandfather standing beside a newborn baby.

On the back, written in his handwriting, were six words:

*If they find Nia, they find me.*

Nia looked at Angela.

“What did Grandpa know?””

Angela stared at the photograph.

Then she whispered the truth she'd been too afraid to say for eighteen years.

“He knew someone in this family had ordered your mother's murder.””

Nia went completely still.

Behind them, the basement door suddenly slammed shut.

David turned.

Thomas's voice echoed from the stairs.

“You finally found it.””

Nia looked up.

Thomas stood in the doorway, handcuffed between two police officers.

But he wasn't looking at the documents.

He was staring at the photograph in Nia's hand.

His face was terrified.

“Nia,” he said.

She stood.

“Who ordered it?””

Thomas looked at Angela.

Then Vanessa.

Then the phone still pressed against Nia's ear.

Ava was crying on the other end.

Thomas closed his eyes.

“I was never the one you needed to fear.””

Nia's voice hardened.

“Then who?””

Thomas opened his eyes.

And pointed at Vanessa.

“Her.””

Vanessa gasped.

“No.””

Thomas continued.

“She didn't just take you.””

Nia stared at Vanessa.

Thomas's voice broke.

“She killed the person who tried to expose her.””

Vanessa shook her head violently.

“I didn't kill anyone.””

Thomas looked at Nia.

“Your aunt wasn't the only person who survived that night.””

Nia's heart pounded.

“Who else survived?””

Thomas looked toward the basement wall.

Then he said:

“Your grandfather.””

The police officer frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Thomas stared at Nia.

“He's been alive this entire time.””

Nia couldn't move.

Her phone slipped slightly from her hand.

Ava's voice whispered through the speaker.

“Nia…”

Nia looked toward the wall.

And from behind it came a sound.

Three slow knocks.

Then a man's voice.

Weak.

Old.

But unmistakably familiar from the recordings her mother had once played for her.

“Nia?””

Angela collapsed into tears.

David stepped backward.

Vanessa covered her face.

And Nia stood before the hidden wall, finally understanding why everyone had spent eighteen years trying to keep her from finding the truth.

The voice came again.

“It's Grandpa.””

Nia reached toward the wall.

And behind it, something clicked.

A hidden lock released.

The panel began to open.
