Chapter 5: The Signature

The door opened halfway.

A man stood behind it.

Older than the photograph.

Gray at his temples.

Dark suit.

Steady eyes.

Nia stared at him.

She knew that face.

Not from memory.

From the photograph.

From the framed picture Vanessa kept hidden in the back of an old cabinet.

From the face she had once asked about as a child.

Her father.

David Carter.

Nia couldn't speak.

David looked directly at her.

“Happy graduation.””

Her eyes filled instantly.

“You're alive.””

David nodded.

“Yes.””

“You lied.””

“I did.””

“You all lied.””

No one moved.

David stepped into the backstage room.

Angela turned away, pressing a hand against her mouth.

Vanessa stared at him with open hatred.

“You weren't supposed to come here.””

David looked at her.

“You weren't supposed to rip that gown.””

Nia looked between them.

“Why are you talking like this was planned?””

David said nothing.

Nia's voice sharpened.

“Why did you come?””

“To stop the lies.””

Angela stepped forward.

“David, you promised.””

“I promised to stay away until she graduated.””

Nia froze.

“Why?””

David looked at her.

“Because Vanessa told me you'd hate me if you knew the truth.””

Vanessa snapped, “Don't blame me for your choices.””

David laughed once.

“You forged my signature.””

Nia turned toward Vanessa.

“What?””

Vanessa's face tightened.

David pointed at the folder.

“The custody agreement. The guardianship transfer. The name-change petition.””

He looked at Nia.

“None of those signatures were mine.””

Nia stared at Vanessa.

“You forged his signature?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

David pulled a folded document from his jacket.

He held it out.

“Look.””

Nia took it.

Her hands trembled.

At the bottom was a signature.

*David Carter.*

She looked at him.

“That looks like your name.””

“It isn't my signature.””

“How do you know?””

“Because I was in another state when that document was filed.””

Angela whispered, “I told you.””

Nia looked at her.

“You knew?””

“I knew the papers were wrong.””

“But you signed them anyway.””

Angela's eyes filled with tears.

“I signed because I thought it was the only way to keep you alive.””

The room went silent.

Nia stared at her.

“Alive?””

Vanessa immediately said, “That's enough.””

“No!””

Nia's voice cracked across the room.

“Everyone keeps telling me they're protecting me. Nobody tells me what I'm being protected from.””

David looked at Angela.

Angela nodded.

David took a slow breath.

“Your father wasn't the person Vanessa wanted you to fear.””

Nia whispered, “Then who was?””

David looked at the folder.

“The man who paid Vanessa.””

Nia's stomach dropped.

“Paid her for what?””

Vanessa lunged for the folder.

David caught her wrist.

“Don't.””

Vanessa struggled.

“You don't know what you're doing.””

“I know exactly what I'm doing.””

Nia watched them.

“Paid her for what?””

Vanessa stopped fighting.

Her eyes closed.

Angela stepped forward.

“She was supposed to give you up.””

Nia's lips parted.

“What?””

“When you were born,” Angela continued, “there was an agreement.””

David said, “A private adoption arrangement.””

Angela shook her head.

“It wasn't an adoption.””

Nia looked at Vanessa.

“What was it?””

Vanessa whispered, “A custody transfer.””

“Why?””

“Because someone wanted you.””

“Who?””

Vanessa's eyes flicked toward David.

“He said you were dangerous.””

Nia almost laughed.

“I was a baby.””

“He didn't mean you.””

David's expression hardened.

“He meant your name.””

Nia frowned.

“My name?””

Angela opened the folder again.

She pulled out a birth certificate.

“Your biological family owned something.””

Nia stared.

“What?””

“A company.””

David said, “And when your grandfather died, the inheritance was supposed to come to you.””

Nia looked at Vanessa.

“But I never got anything.””

“No,” David said.

“Why?””

“Because someone changed the beneficiary documents.””

Nia looked at the torn page on the floor.

“And Vanessa helped.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“I didn't know how far he would go.””

David stared at her.

“You knew enough.””

Nia stepped backward.

“Who inherited everything?””

No one answered.

She looked at Angela.

“Who?””

Angela finally said, “Your uncle.””

Nia frowned.

“I don't have an uncle.””

David looked at her.

“You do.””

Nia's eyes narrowed.

“Then why have I never heard his name?””

David reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a second photograph.

This one was older.

A little boy stood beside a man outside a courthouse.

David placed it on the chair.

Nia looked at the man.

Her breath caught.

She recognized him.

He was in dozens of family pictures.

He had attended every birthday.

Every Thanksgiving.

Every school event.

She had always thought he was simply one of Vanessa's relatives.

Nia whispered his name.

“Thomas.””

David nodded.

“Thomas Carter.””

Vanessa suddenly whispered, “He can't know you're here.””

Nia turned.

“Why?””

Vanessa stared at the backstage door.

“Because he wasn't supposed to find out that Angela came back.””

David's phone vibrated again.

He looked at the screen.

A new message appeared.

*I'm already inside.*

Nia's face went cold.

Then the auditorium doors opened.

A staff member's voice echoed through the backstage corridor.

“Next graduate: Nia Carter.””

Nia looked at the doorway.

May you like

And from somewhere beyond the curtain, she heard a familiar man's voice say:

“That's my niece.””
