Chapter 4: The Daughter Who Came Back From The Dead

Charles Sterling had imagined this moment thousands of times.

He imagined opening a door and seeing Amelia standing there.

He imagined hearing her voice.

He imagined falling to his knees, holding her, apologizing for every day they had spent apart.

But he had never imagined it like this.

Not in a dark apartment.

Not surrounded by photographs of his missing daughter.

Not with the man who had been hunting her standing beside her.

And not with Amelia looking at him like she was afraid of what his happiness might become.

For several seconds, Charles couldn’t move.

He couldn’t speak.

His entire body seemed frozen between two impossible truths.

His daughter was alive.

His daughter had been hiding from him.

“Amelia…”

Her name left his lips like a prayer.

The woman standing in the doorway closed her eyes.

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“Hi, Dad.””

Twenty years disappeared in a single second.

Charles took one step forward.

Then another.

But Amelia immediately stepped back.

The movement hurt him more than anything.

Not because she was afraid.

Because she had every reason to be.

Charles stopped.

“Why?””

His voice cracked.

It was the only word he could find.

Why did you leave?

Why didn’t you come home?

Why did you let me believe you were dead?

Why did I bury an empty coffin?

Amelia looked down.

“I wanted to.””

Charles swallowed.

“Wanted to?””

“I tried.””

The rain outside became louder.

Daniel Voss remained silent beside her.

Charles noticed something.

Daniel wasn’t standing like a threat.

He was standing like a shield.

Like someone protecting Amelia.

That confused him more than anything.

“You worked for Richard.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Yes.””

“And you helped hide my daughter.””

Daniel looked at Amelia.

“She was trying to survive.””

Charles looked back at Amelia.

“From who?””

Amelia’s eyes filled with pain.

“You already know.””

The answer was quiet.

But it carried the weight of years.

“Richard.””

She nodded.

Charles felt anger rising again.

But this time, it was mixed with something worse.

Guilt.

Because his brother had been close enough to destroy his daughter.

And Charles had never seen it.

“Tell me everything.””

Amelia looked toward Daniel.

He nodded.

“She deserves to know.””

Charles almost laughed.

“No.””

His voice was sharper.

“I deserve to know.””

Amelia looked at him.

And for the first time, Charles saw something familiar.

The same stubbornness she had as a child.

The same fire.

The same Amelia.

“I was twenty-one when I found the documents.””

Charles frowned.

“What documents?””

“The ones your father hid.””

Charles remembered the folder.

The Sterling succession plan.

The warning.

Amelia continued.

“Grandfather discovered Richard was moving company money through hidden accounts.””

Charles stared.

“Richard?””

“Yes.””

She walked slowly into the apartment.

Her eyes moved across the photographs on the wall.

“Richard wasn’t just stealing money.””

Charles followed her.

“What was he doing?””

“He was preparing to take control of everything.””

Charles looked confused.

“But why?””

Amelia gave a bitter smile.

“Because he believed Sterling Holdings should have been his.””

Charles remembered.

His father had always chosen Charles as his successor.

Not because Richard was incapable.

Because Richard lacked something.

Discipline.

Patience.

Trust.

Richard had always been brilliant.

But he wanted shortcuts.

“He blamed me,” Charles whispered.

Amelia nodded.

“He blamed you.””

She looked at him.

“And he blamed me for being your daughter.””

The words cut deep.

Charles closed his eyes.

He remembered Richard saying Amelia was too emotional.

Too idealistic.

Too soft.

He remembered defending her.

But apparently not enough.

“What happened that night?””

Amelia took a slow breath.

“The night of the accident, I was driving to meet you.””

Charles froze.

“To meet me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I found proof.””

She looked toward the window.

“I was going to tell you everything.””

Charles felt his chest tighten.

“But you never arrived.””

“No.””

Her voice became smaller.

“Because Richard found out.””

Silence.

Charles stared at her.

“How?””

“He had someone inside the company.””

“Who?””

Amelia didn’t answer immediately.

That scared Charles.

“Amelia.””

She looked at him.

“Someone you trusted.””

Charles felt a chill.

“Who?””

Before she could answer, Daniel spoke.

“Not yet.””

Charles turned sharply.

“What do you mean, not yet?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Because if we say the name, and the wrong person hears it, Amelia and Ella are still in danger.””

Charles’s anger exploded.

“My granddaughter was brought into my gala barefoot because she was running from someone!””

Daniel didn’t react.

“I know.””

“She was hungry.””

“I know.””

“She was terrified.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“And that is exactly why we cannot make mistakes.””

The room went quiet.

Charles stared at him.

Then he realized something.

Daniel wasn’t defending Richard.

He was afraid of him.

Charles lowered his voice.

“How long have you been protecting her?””

Daniel looked away.

“Since the accident.””

Charles froze.

“Twenty years?””

Daniel nodded.

“I was Richard’s assistant.””

“You knew?””

“I knew enough.””

Charles walked closer.

“You let me mourn her.””

Daniel looked at him.

“I thought bringing her back would get her killed.””

Charles stopped.

The anger remained.

But confusion replaced part of it.

“What happened after the crash?””

Amelia answered.

“I survived.””

Charles looked at her.

“The reports said—”

“They were fake.””

His jaw tightened.

“Who changed them?””

“Richard.””

Charles looked away.

The pain was overwhelming.

His brother had not simply taken his daughter.

He had rewritten reality.

“He told everyone I was dead.””

Amelia continued.

“He made sure no one searched for me.””

“Why didn’t you contact me?””

She looked at him.

“Because every time I tried, someone stopped me.””

Charles felt his stomach drop.

“Someone?””

Amelia nodded.

“Emails disappeared.””

“Phone calls were intercepted.””

“People who helped me suddenly changed their minds.””

Charles looked around the apartment.

All those photographs.

All those years.

“You were watching me.””

Amelia’s face softened.

“I was.””

“Why?””

She looked down.

“Because I missed you.””

That broke something inside him.

Charles turned away.

A billionaire.

A businessman.

A man who had negotiated billion-dollar deals without blinking.

Suddenly he was just a father.

A father who lost twenty years with his daughter.

“Why didn’t you let me know you were alive?””

Amelia’s voice trembled.

“Because I had Ella.””

Charles looked at her.

“My granddaughter.””

She nodded.

“Richard found out about her before she was born.””

Charles’s face hardened.

“How?””

“Because he never stopped looking for me.””

The room felt colder.

Amelia continued.

“He knew if he found Ella, he could control me.””

Charles clenched his fists.

“He threatened you.””

“Yes.””

“With what?””

“With her.””

Charles looked down.

He understood.

A mother would do anything.

Even disappear.

Even allow her own father to believe she was dead.

Even watch from a distance.

Charles looked at Amelia.

“You thought you were protecting her.””

“I was.””

“No.””

His voice broke.

“You were protecting her alone.””

Amelia looked away.

Charles stepped closer.

“I would have helped you.””

A painful smile appeared on her face.

“I know.””

“Then why?””

“Because I was scared you would do what you always do.””

Charles frowned.

“What?””

“Fight.””

She looked at him.

“You would have attacked Richard immediately.””

Charles didn’t answer.

Because she was right.

“If you went after him without proof,” Amelia said, “he would have destroyed you.””

Charles looked at Daniel.

“And now?””

Daniel handed him a folder.

“Now we have proof.””

Charles opened it.

Inside were financial records.

Photos.

Messages.

Everything connected to Richard.

But one page caught his attention.

A document from the night of the accident.

At the bottom was a signature.

Charles recognized it instantly.

His own.

But he had never signed it.

His face changed.

“What is this?””

Amelia stepped closer.

“That’s why I came back.””

Charles read the document again.

A legal agreement.

A transfer of company control.

Signed the night Amelia disappeared.

A plan prepared before the accident.

His blood went cold.

Richard hadn’t just wanted Amelia gone.

He wanted Charles gone too.

Then Charles noticed something written on the back.

A handwritten note.

Three words.

The same handwriting as the warning.

But this time, it wasn’t Amelia’s.

It was his father’s.

*Trust no Sterling.*

Charles slowly looked up.

Because that meant the danger was not only Richard.

The danger was his entire family.

And before he could ask another question, Amelia’s phone suddenly rang.

Everyone froze.

She looked at the screen.

Her face went pale.

Charles saw the name.

A name that made Amelia step backward.

Because the person calling her was someone who should not have known she was alive.

Someone who was supposed to be on Charles’s side.

Someone from inside his own home.

Amelia whispered:

“Dad…”

Charles looked at the phone.

“Who is it?””

May you like

Her hand trembled.

“It’s your wife.””
