Chapter 8: The Person Behind The Accident
The figure standing in the doorway did not move.
For a moment, Charles Sterling thought his mind was playing a cruel trick on him.
Too many secrets.
Too many betrayals.
Too many impossible truths had been revealed in one night.
But the person standing there was real.
And Charles knew that face.
He had seen it in old photographs.
He had heard stories.
He had lived with the consequences.
“Grandfather…”
Amelia’s voice broke the silence.
Charles felt his heart stop.
Because the man standing in the doorway was not a stranger.
It was Edward Sterling.
His father.
The man who had died fifteen years ago.
The man whose portrait still hung above the fireplace in Sterling Manor.
The man whose decisions had shaped the family for decades.
Charles stared.
“That’s impossible.””
The older man looked at him.
His expression was calm.
Too calm.
“Is it?””
Charles took a step back.
“No.””
His voice hardened.
“My father is dead.””
Richard stood beside him.
For the first time all night, he looked genuinely nervous.
“Charles…”
Charles turned sharply.
“You knew?””
Richard didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Charles looked back at the man in the doorway.
“Who are you?””
The man smiled sadly.
“Your father.””
The room went silent.
Amelia moved closer to Charles.
“Dad, that’s not possible.””
Charles looked at Richard.
“What is happening?””
Richard’s face was pale.
“I thought he was gone.””
The older man entered the room slowly.
“You both thought many things.””
Charles felt anger replace his shock.
“You let me bury you.””
The man stopped.
“Because I had to.””
Charles laughed once.
A bitter, broken sound.
“Everyone in this family has a reason, don’t they?””
His voice rose.
“You all lie. You all hide things. And somehow, every terrible thing you do is because you had to.””
Edward Sterling looked at him.
“You think I don’t understand your anger?””
“I don’t care what you understand.””
Charles stepped forward.
“You watched me believe Amelia was dead.””
Edward looked at Amelia.
His expression changed.
For the first time, sadness appeared.
“I watched my granddaughter disappear.””
Amelia stared at him.
“You knew I was alive?””
Edward nodded.
“Yes.””
Her eyes filled.
“Did you ever try to find me?””
The question was quiet.
But it carried years of pain.
Edward looked away.
“I did.””
“When?””
“After the accident.””
Amelia laughed bitterly.
“Then why didn’t you come?””
Edward had no answer.
And that silence hurt more than any excuse.
Charles looked between them.
“Explain.””
Edward sighed.
“The night Amelia disappeared, I discovered Richard’s plan.””
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“Father.””
“No.””
Edward looked at him.
“Not anymore.””
The room went still.
Edward continued.
“Richard was desperate. He knew Amelia had discovered the truth about Sterling Holdings.””
Charles looked at Richard.
“And you helped him?””
Richard said nothing.
Edward continued.
“But there was another problem.””
“What?””
Edward looked at Charles.
“Someone else was moving against the family.””
Charles frowned.
“Who?””
Edward’s eyes moved toward Amelia.
“The person who wanted Amelia gone wasn’t Richard.””
Everyone froze.
Richard looked shocked.
“But you said—”
“I said you helped.””
Edward’s voice became cold.
“You were a tool.””
The words hit Richard hard.
Charles watched his brother’s face change.
For years, Richard had acted like the mastermind.
Now he looked like someone who had discovered he was also being used.
“Who controlled you?”” Charles asked.
Edward didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked toward the hallway.
“Show them.””
A shadow moved.
Then another person stepped into the room.
Charles’s entire body went cold.
Because the person walking toward them was someone he had seen almost every day.
Someone who had comforted him.
Someone who had shared his bed.
Someone who had claimed she was trying to protect his family.
Victoria.
But she was not alone.
She held a small device in her hand.
And her face was different.
Not afraid.
Not broken.
Determined.
Charles stared.
“Victoria?””
Amelia looked devastated.
“No.””
Victoria looked at her.
“I’m sorry.””
Charles felt something inside him collapse.
“You?””
Nobody spoke.
The woman he trusted most looked at him.
And for the first time in twenty years, he realized he never truly knew her.
“Explain.””
Victoria looked down.
“I didn’t want this.””
Charles almost laughed.
“Not that sentence again.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know how it sounds.””
“You were the one who warned me.””
“Yes.””
“You were the one who told me Richard was dangerous.””
“Yes.””
“You helped Amelia.””
“Yes.””
Charles stared.
“Then why are you standing with him?””
Victoria looked at Edward.
Then back at Charles.
“Because Edward isn’t the person you think he is.””
Charles looked confused.
“Then who is he?””
Victoria’s voice became quiet.
“The person who started everything.””
The room exploded with silence.
Edward’s expression changed.
“Careful.””
Victoria shook her head.
“No more secrets.””
Charles looked at her.
“What are you talking about?””
Victoria took a breath.
“Twenty-five years ago, Edward discovered Thomas Vale’s company.””
Charles frowned.
“The man Richard mentioned.””
“Yes.””
She continued.
“Edward didn’t steal the company.””
Everyone looked surprised.
“He bought it.””
Charles stared.
“Then why hide it?””
“Because Thomas Vale didn’t own it legally.””
Victoria looked at Amelia.
“His company was built using stolen money.””
Charles looked confused.
“Then what is the truth?””
Victoria looked at Edward.
“The truth is that everyone is guilty.””
The words echoed.
Charles felt exhausted.
Twenty years of searching.
And the answer was not one villain.
It was generations of secrets.
Edward stepped forward.
“Victoria doesn’t understand the entire story.””
She looked at him.
“I understand enough.””
Charles looked between them.
“Enough for what?””
Victoria looked at him.
“For why Amelia had to disappear.””
Amelia’s face changed.
“Wait.””
Charles turned toward his daughter.
“What?””
She looked terrified.
“Mom…”
The word was not directed at Victoria.
It was directed at something else.
A memory.
A realization.
Charles noticed.
“What is it?””
Amelia slowly looked at Victoria.
“You weren’t trying to protect me.””
Victoria didn’t answer.
“You were trying to control where I went.””
Charles stared.
Victoria’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But Amelia saw it.
“You knew where I was all along.””
Silence.
Charles looked at his wife.
“Victoria?””
She closed her eyes.
“I knew.””
The admission destroyed the last piece of trust.
Charles whispered:
“For twenty years?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Victoria looked at Amelia.
“Because I was trying to keep you hidden.””
Amelia shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice became stronger.
“You were keeping me trapped.””
Victoria looked away.
Charles felt sick.
The woman who comforted him.
The woman who held him while he cried.
The woman who told him to let go.
She had known.
She had known.
A sudden noise interrupted them.
A phone ringing.
Everyone froze.
Not Charles’s.
Not Amelia’s.
Victoria looked at the device in her hand.
The screen lit up.
A message appeared.
She read it.
And all the color disappeared from her face.
Charles noticed.
“What does it say?””
Victoria didn’t answer.
“Victoria.””
Slowly, she turned the screen toward him.
One sentence.
A warning.
*You have ten minutes. Bring Ella to the basement, or Amelia dies.*
Charles’s heart stopped.
“Ella.””
Amelia immediately looked around.
“Where is she?””
Nobody answered.
Then Marcus’s voice came through the communication device.
Broken.
Urgent.
“Mr. Sterling.””
Charles grabbed it.
“What happened?””
A pause.
Then Marcus said:
“We lost Olivia’s signal.””
Charles felt cold.
“Where is Ella?””
Another pause.
“Sir…”
Marcus’s voice lowered.
“Someone took her.””
Charles turned toward Richard.
But Richard was already looking toward Victoria.
Because he understood something.
This wasn’t over.
It had only changed.
Edward looked at the message.
His expression finally showed fear.
Charles noticed.
“What?””
Edward whispered:
“No.””
Charles stepped closer.
“What do you know?””
Edward looked at him.
For the first time in twenty-five years…
Edward Sterling looked terrified.
“Whoever took Ella…”
A pause.
“He’s the one person none of us escaped from.””
The mansion lights flickered.
Then every screen in the room turned on.
A video appeared.
A little girl sat in a dark room.
Ella.
Alive.
Crying.
And beside her stood a man whose face was hidden in shadow.
The man spoke.
“Hello, Charles.””
Everyone froze.
Because they recognized the voice.
Richard.
Edward.
Victoria.
Amelia.
All of them.
The voice belonged to someone from their past.
Someone who should have been dead.
The man stepped into the light.
And Charles Sterling finally understood.
The accident twenty years ago was never meant to kill Amelia.
It was meant to erase the only person who knew the truth.
The man smiled.
“Did you miss me, Charles?””
May you like
Amelia whispered:
“Uncle Thomas…”
