Chapter 7: The Secret Beneath The Sterling Name

The envelope felt heavier than paper.

Charles Sterling had held contracts worth billions.

He had signed agreements that changed entire industries.

He had made decisions that affected thousands of lives.

But nothing had ever felt as dangerous as opening a small envelope found in his daughter’s childhood bedroom.

Because inside was the truth.

Not just about Amelia.

Not just about Richard.

About the entire Sterling family.

Victoria sat against the bed, exhausted but awake.

Amelia stood beside Charles, her eyes fixed on the envelope.

Richard remained near the doorway.

Silent.

Watching.

And for the first time in Charles’s life, his brother looked like a man who had lost control.

“Open it,” Amelia whispered.

Charles looked at her.

“You’re sure?””

She nodded.

“I spent twenty years trying to find what was inside.””

Charles carefully opened the envelope.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

Old.

Yellowed.

Folded several times.

At the top was a date.

Twenty-five years earlier.

Charles began reading.

Then his expression changed.

“What is it?”” Victoria asked.

Charles didn’t answer.

His eyes moved across the page again.

Because the first sentence made no sense.

*I know my son will try to take everything from this family.*

Charles looked up slowly.

“Your grandfather wrote this about Richard?””

Amelia nodded.

“He knew.””

Richard laughed quietly from the doorway.

Everyone turned.

“You really think you understand what you’re reading?””

Charles stared at him.

“You threatened my daughter.””

Richard’s expression hardened.

“No.””

“Then explain.””

Richard looked at the paper.

“Your father wrote many things when he was afraid.””

Charles stepped forward.

“Afraid of you?””

Richard smiled.

“Afraid of losing everything.””

Amelia shook her head.

“You’re still doing it.””

“Doing what?””

“Changing the story.””

Richard looked at her.

“You always hated that about me.””

“I hated that you thought everyone else was stupid.””

The room became tense.

Charles looked back at the letter.

He continued reading.

The handwriting became messier toward the bottom.

*Richard discovered the truth. He knows what happened before Sterling Holdings became what it is today. If anything happens to me, Charles must know the company was never built honestly.*

Charles stopped.

His fingers tightened around the paper.

A terrible thought formed.

His father had known.

All these years.

He had known something was wrong.

“What happened before Sterling Holdings?””

Nobody answered.

Charles looked at Richard.

“Tell me.””

Richard remained quiet.

“Richard.””

Finally, his brother spoke.

“You want the truth?””

Charles stared.

“Yes.””

Richard walked slowly into the room.

“Then stop pretending you are innocent.””

The words surprised everyone.

Charles frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Richard looked around the room.

“At this house.””

He smiled bitterly.

“At this family.””

Then he looked at Charles.

“You inherited a kingdom and never asked who built it.””

Charles’s face hardened.

“My father built this company.””

“No.””

Richard shook his head.

“He took it.””

Silence.

Charles looked at Amelia.

She looked equally shaken.

Richard continued.

“Before Sterling Holdings existed, our father worked with a man named Thomas Vale.””

Charles frowned.

“Who?””

“A businessman.””

Richard walked toward the fireplace.

“A brilliant man. Honest. Respected.””

“What happened to him?””

Richard looked at the floor.

“He disappeared.””

Charles felt something change.

“Disappeared?””

Richard nodded.

“Our father took control of everything.””

Charles stared.

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

Richard looked at him.

“You never checked.””

Charles said nothing.

Because deep down, he knew.

He had never questioned his father’s success.

He had only inherited it.

He had spent his life improving the empire.

Never asking how the foundation was created.

Amelia stepped forward.

“That’s what I found.””

Charles looked at her.

“The documents?””

She nodded.

“Grandfather kept records.””

Richard’s face changed.

“Amelia.””

She ignored him.

“He discovered that Sterling Holdings was built using stolen assets.””

Charles looked at Richard.

“And you tried to expose it?””

Richard laughed.

“Expose it?””

His voice became bitter.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Richard looked directly at Charles.

“I tried to protect it.””

The answer stunned everyone.

Charles stared.

“Protect?””

“Yes.””

Richard’s voice became sharper.

“Because if the truth came out, everything would collapse.””

Charles shook his head.

“That doesn’t justify what you did.””

Richard’s expression darkened.

“You think I wanted Amelia gone?””

Charles stepped closer.

“You knew she was alive.””

“Yes.””

“You let me suffer.””

Richard looked away.

For the first time, something almost like regret appeared.

“I had no choice.””

Amelia laughed bitterly.

“No choice?””

She stepped forward.

“You locked me away.””

Richard looked at her.

“I kept you alive.””

“You destroyed my life.””

“I saved it.””

Charles looked between them.

“What exactly happened the night of the accident?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Amelia answered.

“Richard found me before I reached Dad.””

Charles waited.

“He took the evidence.””

“What evidence?””

“The original company records.””

She swallowed.

“He knew if I gave them to you, you would expose everything.””

Charles looked at Richard.

“So you caused the crash.””

Richard’s silence was enough.

Charles’s anger exploded.

“You caused the crash.””

“No.””

Richard’s voice was suddenly firm.

“I arranged it.””

The confession filled the room.

Victoria covered her mouth.

Charles stared.

“You…”

Richard continued.

“But I never intended for Amelia to die.””

Charles’s expression changed.

“What?””

Richard looked at Amelia.

“The driver was supposed to scare you.””

Amelia’s eyes filled with anger.

“You think that makes it better?””

“No.””

Richard’s voice was quieter.

“It doesn’t.””

Charles stepped closer.

“You destroyed my family.””

Richard looked at him.

“Your family was already destroyed.””

The words were cruel.

But they carried something else.

Pain.

Richard continued.

“You think I wanted to become this?””

Nobody answered.

“You think I enjoyed watching you get everything?””

Charles stared.

“What are you talking about?””

Richard laughed.

“You were always the chosen one.””

The bitterness in his voice finally appeared.

“Father praised you.””

“You inherited everything.””

“You became the face of Sterling Holdings.””

“And I became the person everyone forgot.””

Charles shook his head.

“That is why you did this?””

Richard looked at him.

“No.””

A pause.

“Not only.””

The room went quiet.

Charles looked at Amelia.

“Then why?””

Richard pointed toward the letter.

“Because your father knew the truth.””

Charles looked down.

“What truth?””

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“That he wasn’t the only one responsible.””

Charles froze.

“What?””

Richard walked closer.

“Ask your daughter.””

Everyone looked at Amelia.

Her face went pale.

Charles felt his stomach tighten.

“Amelia?””

She didn’t answer.

“Tell me.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I found another file.””

“What file?””

“The original company records.””

Charles waited.

“And?””

She looked at him.

“They had your name on them.””

The room went silent.

Charles felt like the floor moved beneath him.

“My name?””

Amelia nodded.

“I didn’t understand at first.””

She looked down.

“But the documents showed that when I found out about the stolen assets, someone had already been trying to fix it.””

Charles frowned.

“Who?””

Amelia whispered:

“You.””

Charles stepped back.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“I never knew.””

“I know.””

She looked at him sadly.

“That’s what made it worse.””

Charles stared.

Amelia continued.

“Grandfather had started hiding evidence before he died.””

“Why?””

“Because he knew someone would destroy it.””

Charles looked at the letter again.

His father’s handwriting.

The warning.

The fear.

Richard’s anger.

Everything was tangled.

But one question remained.

“If I was trying to fix it…”

Amelia finished the sentence.

“Then Richard wasn’t the only person hiding the truth.””

Charles looked at her.

“What are you saying?””

Before she could answer, the lights suddenly went out.

The mansion fell into darkness.

A second later, the emergency lights turned on.

Marcus immediately reached for his weapon.

“Everyone stay where you are.””

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Charles looked toward the door.

Someone was coming.

Richard smiled faintly.

“You finally understand.””

Charles turned.

“What?””

Richard looked toward the hallway.

“You thought this was about me.””

The footsteps got closer.

Richard whispered:

“But I was only covering for someone else.””

The door opened.

A figure stood in the doorway.

Charles froze.

Because the person standing there was someone he never expected.

Someone who had been missing from the Sterling family story for years.

Someone who should have been impossible.

Richard looked at Charles.

May you like

And said:

“Meet the person who ordered Amelia’s death.””
