Chapter 5: The Daughter Who Was Erased
Richard forgot how to breathe.
The words hung in the darkness like a storm waiting to break.
Amelia is alive.
For years, Richard had lived with one impossible loss.
Elena.
Now the universe had opened another wound.
A daughter.
A child whose existence had been stolen from him before he even knew her name.
His grip tightened around the metal box.
“You’re lying.””
Daniel Cross did not move.
The older man looked exhausted.
Not guilty.
Not innocent.
Just tired.
“I wish I was.””
Richard stepped forward.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice was quiet.
“I expect you to hate me.””
The honesty caught Richard off guard.
Behind him, Noah held onto his jacket.
Victoria stood frozen near the bookshelf.
Richard stared at Daniel.
“Where is she?””
Daniel looked away.
“I don’t know.””
Richard’s anger exploded.
“You know enough to walk into this house and tell me she’s alive.””
“I know what Charles wanted me to know.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“Your father was very good at making people believe they had choices.””
The old lawyer slowly walked toward the desk.
“He didn’t just hide secrets, Richard. He built an entire system around them.””
Richard’s eyes narrowed.
“Explain.””
Daniel glanced at Noah.
Then lowered his voice.
“When Amelia was born, Charles discovered Elena was planning to leave you.””
Richard frowned.
“She wasn’t leaving me.””
“I know.””
Daniel nodded.
“But Charles believed Elena was a threat.””
“A threat?””
“He believed she would expose things about the Vale family.””
Richard’s expression changed.
“What things?””
Daniel hesitated.
And that hesitation told Richard there was more.
“Tell me.””
Daniel looked toward the dark hallway.
“Your father was not only protecting his reputation.””
“Then what was he protecting?””
Daniel’s eyes met his.
“The reason he had so much power.””
Silence filled the room.
Richard had spent his entire life hearing about Charles Vale’s brilliance.
His ambition.
His empire.
But nobody ever questioned how it was built.
Daniel continued.
“Charles created companies through hidden partnerships. He controlled people through information. He collected secrets the way other men collected money.””
Richard looked down at the documents in the box.
“And Elena knew?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“Because she found the records.””
Richard felt a chill.
“The foundation files.””
Daniel nodded.
“She discovered that Charles had been using the Vale Foundation to move money and hide agreements.””
Victoria whispered:
“That’s why he wanted her gone.””
Richard looked at her.
“You knew about this too?””
Victoria shook her head.
“Not everything.””
Daniel gave a bitter smile.
“Charles made sure nobody knew everything.””
Richard turned back.
“Where is Elena?””
Daniel was silent.
Then:
“She escaped.””
Richard froze.
“What?””
“She escaped from Charles.””
“When?””
“Shortly after Amelia disappeared.””
Richard’s heart pounded.
“She was alive all this time?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t she come back?””
Daniel looked at Noah.
The answer was written on his face before he spoke.
“Because she was protecting her children.””
Richard looked at the boy beside him.
The child who had crossed the city carrying a photograph.
The child who thought his father simply never came.
A wave of guilt hit Richard.
“If she was protecting them…”
His voice broke slightly.
“Why didn’t she trust me?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Because she tried.””
Richard went still.
Daniel reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small envelope.
Richard stared.
“What is that?””
“Something I was supposed to destroy.””
Victoria looked shocked.
“You still had it?””
Daniel nodded.
“I couldn’t.””
Richard took the envelope.
His hands felt numb.
On the front was his name.
Not printed.
Written.
In Elena’s handwriting.
Again.
His heart raced.
“She gave this to you?””
Daniel nodded.
“The night she disappeared.””
Richard stared at him.
“You knew where she was?””
“For a while.””
The answer was painful.
Richard’s voice became quiet.
“Where?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I was ordered not to tell you.””
“By Charles.””
“Yes.””
“And you obeyed.””
Daniel looked down.
“Yes.””
The admission was brutal.
Richard opened the envelope.
Inside was a single letter.
This time, the paper was newer.
Elena had written it after leaving.
Richard,
If you ever read this, I need you to understand one thing.
I never stopped loving you.
Richard’s vision blurred.
He kept reading.
I wanted to come back.
Every day.
Every night.
But Charles made sure I knew exactly what he would do if I returned.
He told me he would take Noah.
He told me he would make sure Amelia disappeared forever.
Richard stopped.
His fingers trembled.
He looked at Daniel.
“Disappeared?””
Daniel looked away.
Richard continued.
I could survive losing you.
I could survive people hating me.
But I could not survive losing my children.
Tears burned Richard’s eyes.
Then he reached the final lines.
Richard, if our children ever find you, please tell them something for me.
Tell them their father loved them.
Even when he didn’t know they existed.
The letter ended there.
No goodbye.
No explanation.
Just love.
Richard lowered the paper.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Noah asked:
“Was my mom scared?””
Richard looked at him.
The question was so innocent.
So painful.
“Yes.””
Noah’s eyes dropped.
“Of you?””
Richard immediately shook his head.
“No.””
He knelt beside him.
“Never of me.””
“Then why didn’t she come?””
Richard searched for the right answer.
But there was no answer that could fix twelve years.
“Because someone made her think she had to choose between staying away and losing you.””
Noah was quiet.
Then he whispered:
“I missed her.””
Richard placed a hand on his shoulder.
“I know.””
“No one knew where she was.””
Richard looked at him.
“I’ll find her.””
The words came naturally.
Like a promise he had been waiting twelve years to make.
The next morning, Richard called every person he trusted.
Private investigators.
Security teams.
Former employees.
Everyone.
But there was one person he needed answers from first.
Margaret Vale.
His mother arrived at the mansion before noon.
She looked older than Richard remembered.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like carrying a secret had aged her.
She entered the study.
Noah was upstairs with a tutor Richard had hired.
Victoria stood near the window.
Daniel sat silently.
Richard remained standing.
“Tell me everything.””
Margaret looked at him.
“I’m sorry.””
“That’s not enough.””
Her eyes filled.
“I know.””
Richard placed the photograph of Amelia on the desk.
“Who is she?””
Margaret looked at the picture.
Her face collapsed.
“My granddaughter.””
Richard watched her carefully.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“You knew I had a daughter.””
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
Richard looked like he had been physically struck.
“Why?””
Margaret covered her mouth.
“Because Charles threatened everyone.””
“He threatened Elena.””
“Yes.””
“He threatened Victoria.””
“Yes.””
“He threatened Daniel.””
“Yes.””
Richard’s voice dropped.
“And you?””
Margaret looked at him.
“He threatened you.””
Richard frowned.
“What?””
“He told me if I ever told you the truth, he would destroy your life.””
Richard laughed bitterly.
“My life?””
Margaret stepped closer.
“Richard, your father knew exactly where to hurt people.””
She touched the photograph.
“When Amelia was born, Charles believed Elena had discovered too much.””
Richard looked at the picture.
“What happened to Amelia?””
Margaret’s face became pale.
“She was taken.””
“By who?””
Margaret whispered:
“Someone Charles trusted.””
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“Who?””
Before Margaret could answer, a phone rang.
Everyone looked toward the sound.
It was Richard’s phone.
Unknown number.
Again.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A child’s voice came through.
Not Noah.
A girl.
Richard froze.
“Hello?””
The voice was soft.
Scared.
“Are you Richard Vale?””
His heart stopped.
“Yes.””
A pause.
Then:
“My mother told me never to call you unless I was in danger.””
Richard stood still.
The entire room watched him.
“Who is your mother?””
The girl’s breathing shook.
Then she said:
“Elena.””
Richard gripped the phone.
“Where are you?””
The girl started crying.
“I don’t know.””
A pause.
Then, barely above a whisper:
“But the man who took me knows where your son is.””
Richard’s expression changed.
“What man?””
The girl hesitated.
Then she said:
“The same man who killed my father.””
Richard felt the room disappear.
“Your father?””
The girl whispered:
“Charles Vale.””
The call suddenly ended.
Richard stared at the phone.
And for the first time, he understood the truth.
May you like
Charles Vale was not hiding a child.
He was hiding a crime.
