Chapter 9: The Last Lie of Charles Vale
Richard felt the world become painfully quiet.
The screen showed three people.
Charles.
Amelia.
Margaret.
His mother sat in a chair, her hands tied, her face pale but conscious.
Amelia stood beside her.
Alive.
Real.
His daughter.
The child he never knew.
The child who had grown up without him.
Richard pressed his hand against the screen.
“Amelia.””
The young woman looked at him.
For a moment, the cold expression disappeared.
Something softer appeared.
Something broken.
“Dad…”
That single word almost destroyed him.
He had spent hours imagining what it would feel like to hear it.
But he never imagined it would come through a screen while she stood beside the man who had stolen her life.
Richard looked at Charles.
“You used her.””
Charles smiled.
“You still see everything emotionally.””
“She is your granddaughter.””
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
Richard froze.
Charles continued.
“She is evidence.””
The word made Amelia look away.
Richard felt anger rising.
“You don’t even see them as people.””
Charles tilted his head.
“I see what they represent.””
“That’s the problem.””
“No.””
Charles smiled.
“That is the difference between us.””
The screen flickered.
Then Charles continued:
“You always cared about people.””
Richard stared.
“And you never understood why that made you weak.””
Richard stepped closer.
“It made me human.””
Charles laughed quietly.
“Humanity is what people use when they want excuses.””
The screen changed.
A document appeared.
Richard recognized it.
The same kind of records Elena had hidden.
The same secrets that had destroyed his family.
Charles pointed toward the document.
“You want the truth?””
Richard said nothing.
“You want to know why I did everything?””
“Yes.””
Charles leaned forward.
“Because the Vale name was never yours.””
Richard felt a chill.
“What?””
Charles smiled.
“You spent your entire life protecting an identity that was stolen before you were born.””
Elena looked at Richard.
Her expression told him Charles was telling the truth.
Richard turned.
“Mom?””
Margaret looked down.
She could not deny it.
Richard’s voice broke.
“How long?””
Margaret closed her eyes.
“Your entire life.””
The answer hurt more than he expected.
Charles continued.
“Your grandfather built the Vale empire. Not mine.””
Richard stared.
“Then who are you?””
Charles smiled.
“That is the question nobody wanted you to ask.””
The screen went black.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then the facility alarm began screaming.
Red lights flashed across the hallway.
Daniel looked toward the control panel.
“He’s moving.””
Richard turned.
“Moving where?””
Daniel typed quickly.
“He’s transferring files.””
“What files?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Everything.””
Richard understood.
Charles was not trying to escape.
He was trying to erase.
The truth.
The evidence.
The history.
Richard grabbed Daniel’s shoulder.
“Stop him.””
“I’m trying.””
Victoria stepped closer.
“What can we do?””
Daniel looked at her.
“There’s another access point.””
“Where?””
“Below us.””
Richard frowned.
“Below?””
Daniel nodded.
“Charles built emergency tunnels.””
Of course he did.
A man who spent his life hiding secrets would always create a way to disappear.
Richard looked at Amelia on the screen.
Then at Noah.
His son stood quietly beside Elena.
Two children.
Two lives stolen.
He was done losing them.
“Take me there.””
The tunnel beneath the facility was narrow and dark.
Richard walked ahead.
Daniel followed.
Victoria stayed behind them.
Elena held Noah’s hand.
For the first time in twelve years, Richard saw them together.
A family that should have existed.
A family that should have grown.
When they reached the underground chamber, the door was already open.
Inside was a room filled with computers.
And Charles was there.
Standing calmly.
Like he had been waiting.
Beside him stood Amelia.
Margaret was gone.
Richard stopped.
“Where is my mother?””
Charles smiled.
“Always worried about someone else.””
“Where is she?””
“Safe.””
Richard looked at Amelia.
“Are you okay?””
She nodded slightly.
But her eyes were full of questions.
Charles stepped away from the computer.
“You look so much like your mother.””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“Don’t talk about her.””
Charles smiled.
“Still angry.””
“Yes.””
“Good.””
Richard frowned.
“What?””
“Anger makes people predictable.””
Richard looked around.
“You planned all of this.””
“Of course.””
“Why?””
Charles walked closer.
“Because I knew one day you would come looking.””
Richard stared.
“Why would you want that?””
Charles stopped.
“Because you needed to know.””
Richard laughed bitterly.
“You destroyed my family so I could learn a lesson?””
“No.””
Charles looked at Amelia.
“I destroyed your family because your family threatened everything I built.””
Richard shook his head.
“You mean your lies.””
Charles’s expression changed slightly.
The first sign of anger.
“You have no idea what I sacrificed.””
Richard stepped forward.
“You sacrificed everyone else.””
Charles looked at him.
Then he said something unexpected.
“You think I enjoyed it?””
The question surprised Richard.
Charles continued.
“I watched my entire life disappear because people wanted the truth.””
Richard stared.
“You’re blaming everyone else.””
“No.””
Charles looked at the floor.
“I’m explaining.””
For a moment, Richard saw something different.
Not kindness.
Not regret.
Something closer to fear.
Then it vanished.
Charles turned toward Amelia.
“She was the only one who understood.””
Amelia looked disgusted.
“No.””
Charles frowned.
“You found the records.””
“Yes.””
“You understood why I had to do what I did.””
“No.””
Her voice became stronger.
“I understood why you were afraid.””
Charles’s face changed.
Richard noticed.
Amelia had something he did not.
Power over him.
“You were afraid everyone would find out you were nothing.””
Charles’s jaw tightened.
Amelia continued:
“You spent your whole life pretending to be powerful because you were terrified someone would see the truth.””
Richard looked at his daughter.
She was not a scared child.
She was someone who had survived.
Charles stepped closer to her.
“You should be careful.””
Amelia did not move.
“Why?””
“Because you still need me.””
“No.””
She looked at Richard.
“I don’t.””
The room went silent.
Then the lights suddenly flashed.
A security door opened behind Charles.
Margaret walked in.
Everyone froze.
Richard stared.
“Mom?””
She looked exhausted.
But free.
Charles turned.
“What are you doing?””
Margaret looked at him.
“I’m ending this.””
Charles laughed.
“You?””
“Yes.””
She stepped forward.
“For years, I was afraid of you.””
Charles smiled.
“And now?””
Margaret looked at Richard.
At Noah.
At Amelia.
“Now I’m more afraid of what happens if I stay silent.””
Charles’s expression darkened.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””
Margaret shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at him.
“I understand exactly.””
She held up a small device.
Daniel immediately recognized it.
“A recording.””
Margaret nodded.
“Everything.””
Richard stared.
“What did you record?””
Margaret looked at Charles.
“His confession.””
Charles’s face changed.
For the first time, he looked uncertain.
Richard understood.
This was the first time Charles had lost control.
The first time someone had prepared for him.
Then the facility doors suddenly locked.
Charles smiled again.
“Did you really think it would be that easy?””
The screens around the room turned on.
Every monitor showed the same image.
A countdown.
00:05:00
Daniel looked at the timer.
“What is that?””
Charles stepped backward.
“An insurance policy.””
Richard stared.
“What happens when it reaches zero?””
Charles smiled.
“The facility burns.””
Everyone froze.
Victoria looked around.
“There are people underground.””
Charles looked at Richard.
“Exactly.””
Richard stepped forward.
“You’ll kill them?””
Charles’s smile faded.
“No.””
He looked at Amelia.
“I’ll erase everything.””
The countdown continued.
00:04:32
Richard looked at his family.
His son.
His daughter.
Elena.
His mother.
All the people Charles had tried to separate.
And he realized something.
Charles had spent years believing fear was the strongest weapon.
But he had made one mistake.
He had brought everyone he hurt into the same room.
Richard looked at Daniel.
“Can you stop it?””
Daniel stared at the system.
“Maybe.””
“How long?””
“Four minutes.””
Richard nodded.
Then he looked at Charles.
“You’re not leaving.””
Charles smiled.
“You still think you can stop me.””
Richard stepped forward.
“No.””
He looked at Amelia.
At Noah.
At Elena.
“I know we can.””
For the first time, Charles looked uncertain.
Because he finally understood.
Richard was not fighting for revenge.
May you like
He was fighting for his family.
And that was something Charles never knew how to control.
