Chapter 7: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Richard stared at the phone.

The call had lasted less than thirty seconds.

But those thirty seconds had shattered everything he thought he knew.

His father was dead.

He had watched the funeral.

He had watched the coffin lowered into the ground.

He had listened as people spoke about Charles Vale’s legacy.

A brilliant businessman.

A powerful man.

A complicated father.

Richard had stood there believing he was burying the past.

Now the past had called him.

And it had spoken.

Victoria was the first person to break the silence.

“Richard…”

He did not answer.

His eyes remained fixed on the phone.

“Richard, say something.””

Slowly, he looked up.

“My father is alive.””

The words sounded impossible even as he said them.

Victoria shook her head.

“No.””

Richard looked at her.

“You heard him.””

“No.””

Her voice became urgent.

“You heard someone who wanted you to believe he was your father.””

Richard turned toward the dark cabin.

The photographs on the wall.

The recorder.

The hidden files.

Everything pointed to one truth.

Someone had spent years controlling the story.

But who?

Daniel’s voice suddenly came through the phone again.

“Richard.””

He answered immediately.

“What did you know?””

A pause.

Daniel sounded afraid.

Not confused.

Afraid.

“Where are you?””

“The cabin.””

Another silence.

Then:

“You need to leave.””

Richard’s expression hardened.

“Why?””

“Because if that call came from him, you are already too late.””

Richard looked around.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Charles never disappeared.””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“You told me he died.””

“I was wrong.””

“You were his lawyer.””

“I was his prisoner.””

The words stopped Richard.

Daniel continued.

“Charles had a plan for everything. His death was part of it.””

Victoria whispered:

“No.””

Daniel heard her.

“Yes.””

Richard walked outside the cabin, needing air.

Rain fell heavily around him.

“How?””

Daniel answered:

“Charles had a private medical team. Doctors who worked only for him.””

Richard frowned.

“You’re saying he faked his death?””

“I’m saying he prepared for a world where everyone thought he was gone.””

“Why?””

Daniel’s voice became quieter.

“Because he knew someone would eventually come looking for the truth.””

Richard looked back at the cabin.

At the photographs.

“At Elena.””

“Yes.””

“At Amelia.””

“Yes.””

“At Noah.””

Daniel did not answer.

That silence was enough.

Richard closed his eyes.

“He knew about Noah.””

“Yes.””

“And he still let me believe Elena abandoned me.””

“Yes.””

A wave of anger moved through Richard.

Not the loud kind.

The kind that settled deep.

“He stole my children from me.””

Daniel said nothing.

Because there was nothing to say.

They returned to the mansion before sunrise.

Richard barely spoke during the entire drive.

His mind kept replaying everything.

Elena’s letter.

Amelia’s voice.

Charles’s impossible phone call.

A lifetime of carefully constructed lies.

When they arrived, Margaret was waiting in the entrance hall.

She knew immediately something had happened.

“What did you find?””

Richard walked past her.

“Tell me about the funeral.””

Margaret froze.

“What?””

“The funeral.””

Her face changed.

Richard turned.

“You said you saw him die.””

Margaret looked away.

“Richard…”

“No.””

His voice was controlled.

“Not another secret.””

Margaret’s eyes filled.

“I didn’t see him die.””

The words landed harder than he expected.

Richard stared.

“What?””

She sat down slowly.

“I saw the body.””

“Whose?””

She did not answer.

Richard stepped closer.

“Whose body?””

Margaret whispered:

“I don’t know.””

The room became silent.

Victoria looked stunned.

“You don’t know?””

Margaret shook her head.

“Charles arranged everything.””

Richard laughed bitterly.

“Of course he did.””

Margaret covered her face.

“I was told it was him.””

“You believed it?””

“I wanted to.””

That answer surprised him.

Margaret looked up.

“I wanted to believe my son was gone because I was tired of being afraid of him.””

Richard softened slightly.

But only slightly.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I thought you would go after him.””

“I would have.””

“Yes.””

She looked at him.

“And that’s why I stayed quiet.””

Richard looked away.

For years, everyone had made choices for him.

Everyone decided what truth he could handle.

Everyone decided what pain he should carry.

He was done.

“Where is he?””

Margaret shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Richard looked toward Daniel.

“Then who does?””

Nobody answered.

Then Noah appeared at the top of the stairs.

“Dad?””

Everyone turned.

The word stopped Richard.

Dad.

A simple word.

A word he had waited his entire life to hear from his child.

Noah walked down slowly.

“I heard shouting.””

Richard immediately softened.

“Hey.””

Noah looked at everyone.

“Did you find my sister?””

Richard hesitated.

Then nodded.

“Yes.””

Noah’s eyes widened.

“She’s okay?””

Richard looked at the floor.

“We’re going to find out.””

Noah accepted that.

Then he walked closer.

“Can I ask something?””

“Of course.””

The boy touched the necklace around his neck.

“My mom gave me this because she said my dad would recognize it.””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

Noah looked confused.

“But if my grandpa knew about me…”

His voice became smaller.

“Why didn’t he want me?””

Richard felt the pain in that question.

Because children always blamed themselves for adult cruelty.

He knelt down.

“Noah.””

The boy looked at him.

“Some people hurt others because they are afraid of losing control.””

“Was he afraid of me?””

Richard swallowed.

“Yes.””

Noah looked surprised.

“Why?””

Richard answered honestly.

“Because you were proof that someone loved me more than he wanted.””

The boy thought about that.

Then nodded.

Later that morning, Richard received a message.

A location.

No name.

No explanation.

Just coordinates.

Daniel looked at the screen.

“I know this place.””

Richard looked at him.

“Where?””

Daniel’s face went pale.

“The old Vale research facility.””

Richard frowned.

“Research facility?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your father built it years ago.””

“For what?””

Daniel hesitated.

Richard already knew the answer would be terrible.

“Say it.””

Daniel whispered:

“Behavior studies.””

Richard stared.

“What?””

“Charles was obsessed with understanding people. How they reacted. How they could be controlled.””

Victoria looked sick.

“He experimented on people?””

Daniel looked down.

“I don’t know how far it went.””

Richard’s hands curled into fists.

“But you know enough.””

“Yes.””

Richard grabbed his coat.

“I’m going.””

Margaret stood.

“Richard.””

He stopped.

She walked toward him.

For the first time in years, she looked like his mother instead of Charles’s wife.

“Bring them home.””

Richard looked at her.

“All of them.””

She nodded.

The old research facility was hidden beneath an abandoned industrial building.

From the outside, it looked empty.

Forgotten.

But Richard knew better now.

Nothing connected to Charles Vale was ever truly forgotten.

The security system still worked.

The cameras still watched.

And someone was waiting.

The moment Richard entered the main hallway, the lights turned on.

A screen at the end of the room flickered.

A man appeared.

Older.

Gray hair.

Cold eyes.

Richard stopped.

Charles Vale.

Alive.

Smiling.

“Hello, son.””

Richard stared at the screen.

“You ruined my life.””

Charles smiled slightly.

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“I protected your future.””

Richard laughed.

“You stole my children.””

“I protected my family.””

“Your family?””

Charles leaned closer.

“You still don’t understand.””

The screen changed.

A picture appeared.

Elena.

Amelia.

Noah.

Together.

Richard froze.

Charles continued:

“Everything I did was because the Vale name had to survive.””

Richard looked at the image.

“What did you do to Elena?””

Charles’s expression changed.

Something almost like regret appeared.

“She made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

“She chose love over loyalty.””

Richard stepped closer to the screen.

“Where is she?””

Charles smiled.

“You’re asking the wrong question.””

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“What question should I ask?””

The screen changed again.

A live camera feed appeared.

A room.

A woman sitting in a chair.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Elena.

Richard stopped breathing.

Charles’s voice became quiet.

“The question is…”

A pause.

“Are you ready to know why she really left you?””

The feed zoomed closer.

Elena lifted her head.

And whispered:

“Richard…”

Then the screen went black.

Charles’s final words echoed through the facility.

“Your mother never told you the truth.””

Richard stood in darkness.

And for the first time, he wondered if finding Elena would bring him answers…

or destroy the last piece of his family he had left.
