Chapter 13: The Woman Emily Chose

"Vanessa?""

I repeated the name because I was certain Michael had made a mistake.

"That's what Jonathan Reed told me," he replied.

"Emily named Vanessa as the backup protector under a separate provision. But there's a condition attached.""

"What condition?""

"Jonathan won't explain it over the phone. He wants to meet us tomorrow.""

I looked through the doorway at Ivy.

She was coloring a picture of our family. Rachel had helped her draw Emily in the sky, smiling down at us.

I lowered my voice.

"Michael, Vanessa tried to steal my daughter's inheritance. She locked Ivy in a storage room. She manipulated her. She tried to destroy my career.""

"I know.""

"And Emily supposedly trusted her?""

"I didn't say that. I said Emily named her. We need to understand why.""

That night, I barely spoke.

I kept thinking about Emily's letter, the recordings, and the mysterious legal arrangement.

Maybe Emily had seen something in Vanessa that I had missed.

Or maybe there was another explanation entirely.

At nine the next morning, Michael and I arrived at Jonathan Reed's office.

He was seventy-two, with silver hair, a careful voice, and a photograph of Emily on his desk.

He stood when he saw me.

"Daniel. I'm sorry we have to meet under these circumstances.""

I shook his hand.

"Please tell me what Emily was thinking.""

Jonathan opened a thick folder.

"Your wife was very deliberate. She understood that her illness might eventually leave Ivy dependent on adults who didn't necessarily have her best interests at heart.""

He removed a document.

"Six months before her death, Emily created a secondary protection arrangement. It was designed to prevent anyone from taking control of Ivy's inheritance through marriage, guardianship, or family pressure.""

I stared at the page.

"Why did she name Vanessa?""

Jonathan folded his hands.

"She didn't name Vanessa as the person who could control the money. She named her as a potential witness to a future event.""

I leaned forward.

"Explain.""

"Emily had learned that Vanessa and Margaret were discussing Ivy's inheritance. She suspected that Margaret was trying to influence Vanessa. But she also believed Vanessa might eventually be forced to choose between her mother's wishes and what was right.""

I frowned.

"Emily thought Vanessa might change?""

"Emily didn't assume she would. She created a condition that required Vanessa to make a verifiable declaration if certain events occurred.""

Jonathan turned the document toward me.

The provision was written in precise legal language.

If Vanessa ever attempted to claim control of Ivy's inheritance, she would be required to disclose all communications and financial arrangements connected to that attempt. Any voluntary disclosure would be preserved as evidence and could trigger the release of additional records held by an independent trustee.

It wasn't a gift.

It wasn't a position of authority.

It was a test.

"Emily wanted Vanessa to have one final opportunity to tell the truth," Jonathan explained.

"But she made certain that Vanessa could never benefit financially from doing so.""

I stared at him.

"Why would Emily give her that opportunity?""

Jonathan opened another folder.

"Because Emily had received a letter from Vanessa.""

He handed it to me.

The letter was dated five months before Emily died.

Vanessa had written that she regretted allowing Margaret to become involved in family matters. She said Margaret had been pressuring her to obtain information about Ivy's trust.

She also admitted that Margaret believed Daniel would eventually need a new partner to help raise his daughter.

The final paragraph was handwritten.

I don't want to hurt Emily or Ivy. I don't know how to tell my mother no.

I read it twice.

"Was this genuine?""

Jonathan nodded.

"Emily believed it was. But she also knew Vanessa had continued communicating with Margaret afterward.""

"So Emily knew Vanessa was involved.""

"Yes.""

"Then why didn't she tell me?""

Jonathan's expression softened.

"Because she was afraid you would confront them. Emily believed that would make Margaret accelerate whatever she was planning. She wanted the trust protected before anyone knew how much she understood.""

I sat back.

For months, Emily had been fighting cancer while quietly preparing for a battle she might never live to see.

Jonathan placed one final document on the desk.

"There's another condition. The secondary arrangement only activates if the primary trustee confirms a coordinated attempt to gain control of Ivy's assets.""

"Has that happened?""

"Patricia Wells confirmed it yesterday.""

Michael looked at me.

"Then the arrangement is active.""

Jonathan nodded.

He reached for an envelope.

"Emily left instructions that this should be delivered to you once the condition was met.""

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Daniel,

If you're reading this, someone has tried to take Ivy's future away from her.

I'm sorry.

I wanted to believe that people who entered our lives would love her as much as we do. But love is not something you prove by demanding control.

Please remember that Vanessa is responsible for her choices. Her mother's influence may explain some of them, but it does not excuse them.

If Vanessa tells the truth, let the truth stand.

If she doesn't, don't waste your life trying to make her understand what she has done.

Your job is to raise our daughter.

One day, Ivy will ask whether she was loved enough.

Tell her yes.

Tell her I loved her every second.

And tell her that the two mugs of hot chocolate were never just a Christmas tradition. They were my promise that no matter how difficult life became, she would always have a place where she was safe.

I couldn't finish reading.

Michael quietly moved the letter aside.

Jonathan waited.

Then he spoke.

"There's one more thing. Emily deposited a sealed evidence package with me. It was supposed to remain unopened unless the trust protection provision activated.""

He placed a small envelope on the desk.

The label read:

*For Daniel Carter — Only if Margaret Ellis attempts to control Ivy's inheritance.*

I opened it.

Inside was a flash drive and a handwritten note.

The person who knows what happened to my medical records is not Samuel.

I looked up.

"What does that mean?""

Jonathan shook his head.

"I don't know. Emily gave me no further explanation.""

Michael took the flash drive.

"We'll have it examined.""

But before we could leave, Jonathan stopped me.

"Daniel, there's something else you should know. Vanessa called my office two weeks ago.""

I turned.

"What?""

"She asked whether Emily had left any instructions concerning her.""

"Did you tell her?""

"No. I told her I couldn't discuss a client's private documents.""

Jonathan hesitated.

"She sounded frightened.""

I almost laughed.

"She should be.""

He shook his head.

"She said Margaret had promised her that once the trust money was transferred, they would finally be free of Samuel.""

My blood went cold.

"Free of him?""

Jonathan nodded.

"Apparently, Vanessa believed Samuel had something that could destroy them both.""

On the drive home, Michael arranged for a forensic specialist to examine the flash drive.

At 4:15 p.m., he called me.

"Daniel, you need to hear this.""

"What did you find?""

"A video.""

"Of whom?""

"Margaret. Samuel. And someone else.""

"Who?""

Michael paused.

"Vanessa.""

I closed my eyes.

"What's on it?""

His answer changed everything.

"Margaret is handing Samuel an envelope. But Vanessa isn't standing beside her.""

"Where is she?""

Michael's voice dropped.

"She's standing behind the camera.""

May you like

And then he said the words I wasn't prepared to hear.

"Daniel, she recorded the whole thing.""
