Chapter 8: The Recording in the Christmas Tree
Michael watched the footage twice.
The first time, he concentrated on Samuel.
The second time, he watched Vanessa.
When the video ended, he leaned back in his chair.
"Do you know what was in that envelope?""
"No.""
"Could it have contained the fabricated evaluation?""
"Possibly.""
He paused the footage.
"Look at this.""
He enlarged the image.
Samuel was holding a thick brown envelope. On the corner was a blue hospital logo.
My hospital's logo.
I leaned closer.
"That's our old records department.""
"Exactly.""
"How did he get access to hospital documents?""
"That's what we're going to establish.""
Michael forwarded the footage to the investigator.
Then he called Linda Brooks at the hospital and requested that the institution preserve all relevant records connected to Samuel's former employment.
I sat quietly.
Something about the envelope bothered me.
Samuel had been dismissed eighteen months earlier. His access to hospital systems had been revoked.
He shouldn't have had any reason to possess an envelope bearing our logo.
Unless someone had given it to him.
My phone vibrated.
It was Robert.
I spoke with Mom. She knows I found the folder.
I called him.
"What happened?""
"She came to my apartment this morning.""
"Did you let her in?""
"Unfortunately.""
"Robert!""
"I know. I shouldn't have.""
"What did she want?""
"She wanted the folder back.""
"Did you give it to her?""
"No.""
I exhaled.
"Good.""
Robert lowered his voice.
"Daniel, she threatened to report me to my employer. She said I was stealing confidential family documents.""
"Don't worry about that. Michael can help you.""
"There's something else.""
"What?""
"Mom said Vanessa wasn't supposed to lock Ivy in the storage room.""
I froze.
"What do you mean?""
"She said the original plan was to make Ivy uncomfortable enough that she would ask to live with Margaret.""
I stared at Michael.
Robert continued.
"She wanted to establish herself as a safer alternative before the custody hearing.""
I felt sick.
"Why would she want Ivy?""
"Because she believed the court would be more likely to approve a transfer of guardianship if Ivy was already living with someone from Vanessa's family.""
I gripped the phone.
"Did she say anything about the money?""
"Yes.""
"What?""
"She said Ivy's trust was supposed to pay for a house in Florida. Vanessa would move there with the children after everything was settled.""
I looked at Michael.
He wrote something on his notepad.
"Robert, did your mother ever visit our house when I was away?""
"Yes. Several times.""
"When?""
"Usually when Vanessa said she was helping with the children.""
I closed my eyes.
The pieces were falling into place.
Margaret wasn't merely helping Vanessa.
She was part of the plan.
After the call, Michael contacted the investigator and requested that Margaret be interviewed.
Then he turned to me.
"Daniel, there's one more thing we need to discuss.""
"What?""
"Vanessa's emergency petition includes a claim that Ivy has been expressing a desire to live with her maternal grandmother.""
I frowned.
"That's not true.""
"Can you prove that?""
"Ivy has never said anything like that.""
"Then we need to document her actual statements through the child advocate.""
I nodded.
I was about to leave when my phone rang.
Rachel.
"Daniel, I need you to come home.""
My heart jumped.
"What's wrong?""
"Ivy found something.""
"What?""
"She was looking through the Christmas decorations at my house. There's a little recorder inside one of the ornaments.""
I stopped breathing.
"What kind of recorder?""
"A tiny digital voice recorder. It was hidden inside a wooden Christmas tree decoration.""
"Where did it come from?""
"She says Vanessa gave it to her last year.""
I grabbed my keys.
"Don't touch it. I'll be there.""
Twenty minutes later, I arrived at Rachel's house.
Ivy was sitting on the living room carpet with the wooden ornament beside her.
It was shaped like a small red house with a gold star on top.
"Sweetheart," I said, kneeling beside her, "where did you find this?""
"In my Christmas box.""
"Did you know there was something inside?""
She shook her head.
"Vanessa gave it to me last year. She said it was special because it could remember things.""
Rachel looked at me.
I carefully examined the ornament.
There was a tiny seam along the bottom.
I opened it.
Inside was a small digital recording device.
I looked at Ivy.
"Did Vanessa ever ask you to use this?""
Ivy nodded.
"She said I should tell it when I was upset.""
"Why?""
"She said it would help her understand me.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
Rachel brought over a laptop.
We connected the recorder.
There were seventeen audio files.
The earliest was dated eleven months earlier.
I pressed play.
At first, there was only static.
Then Vanessa's voice.
"Ivy, tell me what happened.""
A child's voice answered.
"I wanted to call Dad.""
"Why?""
"Because I miss him.""
"Does your father spend enough time with you?""
A pause.
"I don't know.""
"Does he make you feel important?""
"Yes.""
Vanessa sighed.
"Think carefully, Ivy. Your father is always at work. He leaves you here with us.""
"Because he helps sick people.""
"And how does that make you feel?""
"I miss him.""
Vanessa's voice softened.
"Wouldn't you rather live with Grandma? She has more time.""
"No. I want Dad.""
The recording ended.
I stared at the screen.
"Play the next one.""
The second file was dated three weeks later.
This time, Vanessa sounded irritated.
"Say it again.""
"I don't want to.""
"Ivy, we have discussed this.""
"But it's not true.""
"Your father is too busy to take care of you. You know that.""
"He takes care of me.""
"Not enough.""
I heard a chair scrape.
Then Ivy began crying.
"Please stop.""
Vanessa's voice became sharp.
"You're going to learn to answer properly.""
The recording ended.
Rachel covered her mouth.
I couldn't speak.
There were seventeen recordings.
Some were ordinary conversations.
Others contained Vanessa repeatedly asking Ivy leading questions about me, her mother, and her inheritance.
One recording was especially disturbing.
It was dated December 12.
Vanessa said:
"Your father will probably choose his job over you if things get difficult.""
Ivy answered:
"No, he won't.""
Vanessa laughed.
"You're very sure about that.""
"Because he loves me.""
There was a long pause.
Then Vanessa said:
"Love doesn't pay for everything, sweetheart.""
The recording ended.
I sat back.
This was no longer just evidence of mistreatment.
It showed a deliberate attempt to manipulate a child into making statements against her father.
Michael arrived twenty minutes later.
He listened to several recordings and immediately contacted the investigator.
"These need to be preserved properly," he said.
"Don't edit them or send copies around.""
I nodded.
He carefully placed the recorder in an evidence bag.
Ivy watched him.
"Am I in trouble?""
Michael crouched beside her.
"No, sweetheart. You've done nothing wrong.""
"Will Vanessa be angry?""
Michael looked at me.
I took Ivy's hand.
"That's not your responsibility.""
She nodded slowly.
Then she looked at the empty Christmas tree box.
"Dad?""
"Yes?""
"There's another decoration.""
I frowned.
"What do you mean?""
"The little silver star. Vanessa said I shouldn't open it.""
Rachel walked toward the storage closet.
She returned with a small silver star ornament.
It was heavier than it looked.
Michael examined it.
There was another hidden compartment.
Inside was a folded piece of paper.
He opened it carefully.
It wasn't a note.
It was a printed photograph.
The photograph showed Vanessa standing in front of a bank with Margaret.
Between them stood Samuel Pierce.
On the back, someone had written a date and a short sentence.
*December 5 — First payment delivered.*
Michael looked at me.
"Daniel, this changes things.""
I stared at the photograph.
"How?""
He turned it over again.
"Because the date is before the fabricated medical evaluation was submitted.""
He paused.
"Which means Samuel was being paid before he even created the evidence against you.""
I looked toward Ivy.
She was sitting quietly beside Rachel, holding her stuffed rabbit.
For months, she had been recording the truth because the adults around her refused to listen.
Then Michael's phone rang.
He answered.
"Yes?""
His expression changed.
"You're certain?""
He listened for several seconds.
Then he looked at me.
"Daniel, Vanessa has requested an emergency hearing for tomorrow morning.""
I frowned.
"Tomorrow?""
Michael nodded.
"And she's bringing a witness.""
"Who?""
He hesitated.
May you like
Then he said:
"Your daughter.""
