Chapter 6: The Father They Tried to Destroy

The emergency custody petition was filed at 3:18 p.m. on Christmas Day.

I read it three times before I could believe what I was seeing.

According to the document, Vanessa claimed that Ivy had become increasingly distressed because of my unpredictable work schedule.

She alleged that I frequently left Ivy unsupervised, ignored her emotional needs, and created an unstable home environment.

The petition requested temporary custody of Ivy until a full hearing could be held.

It also requested that I be restricted from removing Ivy from Ohio.

I looked at Michael.

We were sitting in his office, surrounded by documents.

"She's claiming I'm neglectful?""

Michael nodded.

"Yes.""

"After what happened this morning?""

"The timing is suspicious. But we need to respond with evidence, not emotion.""

I rubbed my face.

"I work in an emergency room. Sometimes I work overnight. Vanessa agreed to care for Ivy when I was away.""

"Do you have records showing that?""

"Everything. My schedule, childcare arrangements, school attendance, medical appointments.""

"Good. Get them together.""

He turned his laptop toward me.

"There's another problem.""

I leaned forward.

"What?""

"Vanessa attached a statement supposedly written by Ivy.""

My stomach dropped.

"Written by my daughter?""

"Yes.""

He opened the document.

The statement claimed that Ivy felt uncomfortable around me and wanted to stay with Vanessa.

I stared at the words.

The language didn't sound like Ivy.

It was full of phrases a ten-year-old wouldn't normally use.

My father has become emotionally unavailable.

His occupational responsibilities interfere with my psychological development.

I pushed the laptop away.

"She didn't write this.""

Michael nodded.

"I suspect that too. But we'll need to establish how it was produced.""

I remembered Ivy's note.

The threat.

If you tell Dad what happened, he will lose everything because of you.

"Can we show that Vanessa pressured her?""

"Possibly. Did Ivy tell you about being forced to write anything?""

"Not yet.""

"Don't question her repeatedly. Let the specialist handle that.""

I nodded.

Michael leaned back.

"Daniel, I want you to understand something. This isn't just a disagreement between spouses anymore. We're dealing with allegations that could affect your parental rights and potentially your medical license if they become public.""

I looked at him.

"My medical license?""

"If someone reports that you're neglecting a child, especially while working in healthcare, your employer may be contacted.""

I felt a cold wave move through me.

Vanessa knew exactly what she was doing.

She wasn't simply trying to take Ivy.

She was trying to destroy the credibility of the person who could expose her.

My phone rang.

It was my hospital's medical director, Dr. Sanders.

I answered.

"Daniel.""

"Dr. Carter, I need you to come in tomorrow morning.""

"Is something wrong?""

"We received a complaint concerning your family situation.""

My jaw tightened.

"What kind of complaint?""

"I can't discuss details over the phone. But the hospital has been informed that your home circumstances may be affecting your ability to practice safely.""

I stared at Michael.

"Who submitted it?""

"We received an anonymous report.""

I closed my eyes.

"Was it from Vanessa?""

"I can't confirm that.""

"Dr. Sanders, I've been working here for eight years. My performance record is clean.""

"I know. That's why I want to speak with you directly.""

"All right. I'll be there.""

After the call, Michael shook his head.

"They're applying pressure everywhere.""

I stood.

"Then we'll give them the truth everywhere.""

That evening, Rachel brought Ivy to Michael's office.

He had arranged for a child advocate to speak with her in a comfortable room away from the adults.

Before they went inside, Ivy approached me.

"Dad?""

"Yes, sweetheart?""

"Are you going to the hospital?""

"Tomorrow morning.""

She looked worried.

"Will they make you stay there?""

I knelt.

"I'll be back.""

"Promise?""

I touched her cheek.

"Promise.""

She hugged me tightly.

Then she whispered, "I don't want Vanessa to take you away.""

I held her for a long moment.

"She can't make me stop being your father.""

After Rachel and Ivy went home, Michael received a call from the investigator assigned to the case.

He put it on speaker.

"Mr. Carter," the investigator said, "we've obtained additional information from the financial institution.""

I sat forward.

"What information?""

"The trust transfer request was submitted using an IP address associated with your residence.""

"Meaning Vanessa?""

"Not necessarily. But the device used appears to be a laptop registered to your household.""

I thought about my office.

My laptop.

The one Vanessa occasionally borrowed to print school documents.

"Can you determine which account accessed the system?""

"We're working on that.""

"Was there more than one submission?""

A pause.

"Yes.""

My stomach tightened.

"How many?""

"Three.""

Michael looked at me.

"Three?""

The investigator continued.

"The first request involved Ivy's custodial trust. The second involved the life insurance account. The third was an application for a new financial power of attorney.""

"Who was listed?""

"Vanessa Carter.""

I slowly leaned back.

Three separate attempts.

Three ways to take control of my daughter's financial future.

"Was the third request approved?""

"No. It was rejected because the supporting identification didn't match the original records.""

I exhaled.

Then the investigator said something else.

"We also found a document attached to the application that concerns us.""

"What document?""

"A scanned copy of a medical evaluation.""

I frowned.

"Whose evaluation?""

"Yours.""

My heart stopped.

"What?""

"It claims you have been diagnosed with a condition affecting your judgment and decision-making abilities.""

I looked at Michael.

"That's false.""

"Do you recognize the physician's name?""

The investigator read it aloud.

I didn't recognize the name.

But Michael did.

His expression changed immediately.

"Daniel," he whispered.

I covered the phone.

"What?""

"That's the name of the doctor who signed Vanessa's previous divorce custody evaluation.""

I turned back toward the phone.

"Where did this evaluation come from?""

"We're investigating.""

"Is it legitimate?""

"We have reason to believe the document may have been altered.""

Michael closed his eyes.

The situation was worse than we had imagined.

Vanessa wasn't simply building a custody case based on my work schedule.

Someone had manufactured medical evidence to make me appear mentally unfit.

The investigator promised to contact us when more information became available.

After the call ended, Michael walked to the window.

"Daniel, you need to prepare for a difficult fight.""

"I've been preparing for worse things in the emergency room for years.""

"This isn't the same.""

I looked at him.

"No. It isn't.""

He turned.

"Vanessa knows your strengths. She knows your schedule, your finances, your relationship with Ivy, and your reputation at the hospital. She's using all of it.""

I thought about the first Christmas morning.

The cold water.

The locked door.

The torn card.

The little girl who had apologized for wanting to see her father.

I had spent years believing that being a good father meant working hard enough to provide everything Ivy needed.

Now I understood that she needed something more important.

She needed me to notice when someone was hurting her.

And I had failed to notice soon enough.

My phone vibrated.

A message from Robert.

I got the folder to a safe place.

Then another.

I also found a voicemail from Mom.

I called him immediately.

"Play it.""

Robert sent the audio file.

I pressed the screen.

Margaret's voice filled the room.

"Vanessa, you need to be careful. Daniel is asking questions. If he finds out about the original trust documents, we're finished.""

A pause.

Then Vanessa's voice.

"Don't worry. By the time he understands what's happening, the custody petition will already be approved.""

Margaret spoke again.

"What about Ivy?""

Vanessa laughed softly.

"She'll stay where she belongs.""

Robert's recording continued.

Then Vanessa said something that made my blood run cold.

"Besides, I already have someone willing to testify that Daniel is an unstable father.""

The voicemail ended.

I looked at Michael.

"Who?""

He shook his head.

"We don't know yet.""

But Robert wasn't finished.

A final message appeared.

Daniel, I think I know who she means.

I called him again.

"Who is it?""

Robert took a shaky breath.

"Someone who used to work at your hospital.""

"Who?""

He hesitated.

Then he said a name I hadn't heard in years.

"Dr. Samuel Pierce.""

I went completely still.

Samuel Pierce had been my former colleague.

He had left the hospital eighteen months earlier after an investigation into falsified medical records.

And now, apparently, he was preparing to testify against me.

But the worst part wasn't his name.

May you like

It was the fact that I remembered exactly why he had left.

Because I had been the doctor who reported him.
