Chapter 5: The Night She Disappeared

The voice came from somewhere downstairs.

“Good. Now the whole family is finally together.””

Daniel’s blood ran cold.

Noah clung to his coat.

Mara’s breath caught.

Charlotte stood frozen inside the hidden room, one hand gripping the edge of the doorway.

Then emergency lights flickered on.

Dim red strips along the hallway ceiling.

Just enough light to reveal a man standing at the bottom of the stairs.

Daniel recognized him instantly.

Victor Hale.

He looked exactly as he had in the newspapers for years: silver hair, tailored black coat, polished shoes, calm expression.

Only now Daniel could see what the photographs never showed.

The complete lack of warmth in his eyes.

“Hale,” Daniel whispered.

Victor smiled.

“Mr. Cross.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“Stay where you are.””

Victor barely looked at him.

“You always were impatient, Ethan.””

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“You’re not taking her.””

Victor tilted his head.

“You still think this is about taking people.””

Daniel moved in front of Noah.

“Where are the police?””

Victor laughed softly.

“By the time they arrive, you’ll be gone.””

Daniel stared at him.

“You kidnapped my daughter.””

Victor’s smile disappeared.

“No. I preserved her.””

“She's fourteen.””

“She’s alive.””

“She was stolen from me.””

Victor looked at Charlotte.

“Your father has a habit of choosing emotional words.””

Charlotte's face tightened.

“You told me he abandoned me.””

Victor turned toward her.

“And he did.””

“I was a baby.””

“You don't remember.””

Charlotte stepped forward.

“I remember what you told me.””

“You remember what you were taught.””

Daniel looked sharply at her.

“Charlotte, don't listen to him.””

Victor’s gaze returned to Daniel.

“How touching.””

Daniel took a step down the hallway.

“You're not leaving with her.””

Victor smiled again.

“You still don't understand the situation.””

He glanced toward the envelope in Daniel's hand.

“You opened nothing.””

Daniel looked down.

The envelope.

Victor had noticed it.

“What's inside?””

Victor didn't answer.

“That depends,” he said, “on whether you want to know the truth about your wife.””

Mara stepped forward.

“Victor, leave them alone.””

Victor looked at her.

For the first time, anger showed on his face.

“You've caused enough damage.””

Daniel turned.

“You know him.””

Mara said nothing.

Victor laughed.

“She knows me very well.””

Daniel’s voice hardened.

“Did you take Charlotte?””

Victor looked directly at him.

“I gave Charlotte a life.””

“You erased her family.””

“I protected her from one.””

Daniel moved forward.

“Don't you dare—”

Ethan grabbed his shoulder.

“Daniel.””

Daniel shrugged him off.

“You murdered people.””

Victor's face remained calm.

“People who knew too much.””

Mara whispered, “And children who asked too many questions.””

Victor looked at her.

“Careful.””

“You've already lost.””

Victor smiled.

“No, Mara. You lost thirteen years ago.””

The words hit her hard.

Charlotte looked between them.

“What does he mean?””

Nobody answered.

Charlotte stepped closer.

“Mom?””

Mara looked at her.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From him?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you tell him where I was?””

Mara’s face went white.

Daniel turned.

“What?””

Charlotte was crying now.

“You told Victor where to find me.””

Mara shook her head.

“I didn't.””

“I heard the recording.””

Daniel's stomach dropped.

“What recording?””

Charlotte reached into her coat and pulled out her phone.

She pressed play.

Mara’s voice filled the hallway.

“She's going to be at the house tonight.””

Daniel stared at her.

Mara staggered backward.

“No.””

The recording continued.

“We have to let Daniel see her.””

Victor’s voice appeared next.

“Then we agree.””

The recording stopped.

Charlotte looked at Mara.

“You knew I was coming here.””

Mara shook her head violently.

“That recording is real, but it isn't what you think.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Then explain it.””

“I was trying to lure Victor here.””

Victor smiled.

“And you thought you could outsmart me.””

Mara glared at him.

“You followed me.””

“You left enough breadcrumbs.””

Daniel looked between them.

His mind raced.

“You two have been communicating?””

Mara didn't answer.

Victor did.

“For years.””

Daniel felt something inside him crack.

“You've been talking to him for years?””

“I had no choice.””

“You always say that.””

Mara looked at Daniel.

“I was trying to get Charlotte back.””

“And you thought working with him would help?””

“I thought I could trade myself.””

Charlotte whispered, “Trade yourself?””

Mara nodded.

“He wanted me.””

Daniel stared.

“What does that mean?””

Victor answered quietly.

“She knows.””

Mara closed her eyes.

“I was inside his organization before I met you.””

Daniel went completely still.

“What?””

Charlotte looked at him.

“She worked for him.””

“No.””

Mara whispered, “Yes.””

Daniel's head shook.

“You were working for Hale?””

“Before I knew what he was.””

“And after?””

“I tried to leave.””

Victor laughed.

“You didn't try very hard.””

Mara's eyes hardened.

“You threatened my family.””

“And you obeyed.””

Daniel looked at her with disbelief.

“Is that why you married me?””

Mara's face collapsed.

“No.””

“Was I just another assignment?””

“No.””

“Then tell me the truth!””

“I loved you.””

Daniel froze.

Mara's tears came freely now.

“I loved you before I understood what they were doing.””

Victor stepped away from the bottom of the stairs.

“Enough.””

He lifted one hand.

Two men appeared behind him.

Daniel immediately pulled Noah closer.

Charlotte stepped backward.

Ethan moved in front of Daniel.

“Everyone stays where they are.””

Victor sighed.

“Ethan, you're making this unnecessarily dramatic.””

“I'm not the one who brought armed men.””

Victor looked at him.

“You brought a child into this.””

Ethan's expression hardened.

“You're not touching him.””

Victor looked at Noah.

Something about his stare made Daniel's skin crawl.

“Interesting.””

Daniel tightened his grip.

“Don't look at my son.””

Victor ignored him.

“Does he know?””

Daniel frowned.

“Know what?””

Victor looked at Mara.

“You never told him about the second child.””

Mara's face drained.

Daniel looked at her.

“What second child?””

Charlotte stared at Mara.

“You had another baby?””

Mara shook her head.

“No.””

Victor smiled.

“That's not what I said.””

Daniel's pulse quickened.

“What are you talking about?””

Victor glanced toward Noah.

“Ask your wife who Noah's biological father really is.””

The room went silent.

Daniel looked at Noah.

Then at Mara.

“No.””

Mara whispered, “Daniel…”

“No.””

“You know he is your son.””

“Then why would he say that?””

“Because he wants to break us.””

Victor smiled.

“And sometimes the truth is the easiest way to do that.””

Daniel stepped toward Mara.

“Look at me.””

She did.

“Tell me Noah is mine.””

“He's yours.””

“Biologically?””

“Yes.””

“Swear it.””

Mara hesitated.

Daniel noticed.

His heart sank.

“Mara.””

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

Victor laughed quietly.

“You see? This is why secrets are so useful.””

Charlotte suddenly shouted.

“Stop!””

Everyone looked at her.

She was holding something.

A small black device.

“I know what this is.””

Victor's smile faded.

Charlotte raised it.

“It was in the hidden room.””

Daniel stared.

“What is it?””

“A recorder.””

Victor’s expression changed.

For the first time, real fear flashed across his face.

Ethan saw it too.

“Everyone move.””

Victor stepped forward.

“Charlotte, give me that.””

“No.””

“That device doesn't concern you.””

“It recorded everything.””

Victor went still.

“What?””

Charlotte looked at Daniel.

“The night I disappeared.””

Daniel's heart pounded.

“You found the recording?””

She nodded.

“Mom was there.””

Mara whispered, “Charlotte, please.””

“You held me.””

Daniel stared at Mara.

Charlotte continued.

“You were crying.””

Mara covered her mouth.

“You kept saying you were sorry.””

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“What happened?””

Charlotte looked at Victor.

“He came into the nursery.””

Victor said nothing.

“He told Mom they were taking me.””

Daniel's breathing became shallow.

“Then what?””

Charlotte looked at Mara.

“You handed me to him.””

“No!””

Mara's voice shattered through the room.

“I didn't hand you over!””

“You did!””

“I had no choice!””

“You always say that!””

Charlotte threw the recorder onto the floor.

It hit the wood.

The recording started automatically.

Static.

Then a baby's cry.

Daniel’s heart broke.

Mara's voice came next, trembling.

“Please don't hurt her.””

A man's voice answered.

“Then stop resisting.””

Daniel knew the voice.

Victor.

The recording continued.

Mara sobbed.

“Take me instead.””

Victor replied calmly.

“You had your chance.””

Footsteps.

A door opening.

Then a baby's screaming cry.

Mara's voice screamed:

“CHARLOTTE!””

The recording cut to static.

Daniel couldn't move.

He looked at Mara.

“You were there.””

“Yes.””

“You let him take her.””

“I thought he was going to kill you.””

“And then?””

“I followed them.””

“Where?””

Mara wiped her tears.

“To Hale's house.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You could have called the police.””

“I did.””

“What?””

“They were already there.””

Daniel stared.

“What does that mean?””

Mara whispered,

“The police officer who answered my call was working for him.””

Victor looked at her coldly.

“You should have stopped talking.””

Mara ignored him.

“I escaped.””

“You left Charlotte.””

“I went back.””

“When?””

“Three days later.””

“Where was she?””

Mara’s voice broke.

“In the room beneath his estate.””

Daniel stared.

“She was alive?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn't you take her?””

“Because there were cameras everywhere.””

Victor smiled.

“And because I told her if Mara tried again, I would kill you.””

Daniel looked at Charlotte.

“How did you escape?””

Charlotte shook her head.

“I didn't.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

She pointed toward the hidden room.

“I was never kept under the estate.””

Victor's face changed.

Charlotte looked at him.

“You made everyone think I was.””

She turned back to Daniel.

“I was here.””

Daniel frowned.

“In this house?””

“For fourteen years.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

Mara looked horrified.

Charlotte's voice trembled.

“Dad, I grew up inside the walls.””

Daniel stared at the dark doorway.

“There was another room?””

Charlotte nodded.

“A whole section under the house.””

Victor stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Charlotte backed away.

“And that's not the worst part.””

Daniel moved closer.

“What isn't?””

Charlotte looked directly into his eyes.

“The reason I was kept here.””

She swallowed.

“It wasn't because Victor wanted me.””

Daniel's heart stopped.

“Then why?””

Charlotte pointed at Noah.

“Because they were waiting for him.””

Daniel turned toward his son.

Noah looked confused.

Victor suddenly moved.

Ethan lunged.

A gunshot exploded through the house.

Daniel dropped over Noah.

Mara screamed.

Charlotte ducked.

When Daniel looked up, Victor was no longer at the bottom of the stairs.

He had disappeared through a side door.

Ethan shouted, “He's running!””

Daniel looked toward Charlotte.

She was staring at the basement stairs.

“That's not where he went.””

“What?””

“He went downstairs.””

“To where?””

Charlotte's face went white.

“To the room where they kept my records.””

Daniel stood.

“Take me there.””

Charlotte shook her head.

“Dad…”

“What?””

Her lips trembled.

“They don't keep records there anymore.””

She looked toward Noah.

“They keep people.””

And then a child's voice came from beneath the floorboards.

“Daddy?””

May you like

Noah screamed.

“That sounds like me.””
