Chapter 8: The Birth Certificate

“Ask Mara why she signed the birth certificate before either baby was born.””

The words followed Daniel into the darkness.

For two seconds, nobody moved.

Then the emergency lights flickered back on.

Ethan was on the floor, one hand pressed against his shoulder. Blood seeped between his fingers.

Charlotte was holding Mara.

Noah clung to Daniel.

And Eli stood frozen beside them.

Daniel looked at Mara.

“Before either baby was born?””

She said nothing.

“Mara.””

Her face was wet with tears.

“I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

Victor Hale stood near the doorway, watching them with the patience of a man who believed he had already won.

Daniel took one step toward Mara.

“Did you sign Noah’s birth certificate before he was born?””

Mara swallowed.

“Yes.””

The answer was barely audible.

Daniel felt the floor shift beneath him.

“When?””

“Three days before the delivery.””

“Why?””

“Because the hospital required pre-registration.””

“That is not what Victor meant.””

“I know.””

“Then what did he mean?””

Mara stared at the two boys.

“I signed two.””

Daniel froze.

“Two birth certificates?””

She nodded.

“One for Noah.””

Her eyes moved to Eli.

“And one for him.””

Daniel looked at the children.

The identical faces.

The same eyes.

The same blood hidden behind different names.

“Why?””

Mara closed her eyes.

“Because they told me I was having twins.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“We had one baby.””

“I know.””

“You were never pregnant with twins.””

“No.””

“Then why did they tell you that?””

“Because they needed paperwork.””

Victor smiled.

“You're getting there.””

Daniel turned toward him.

“Shut up.””

Victor shrugged.

Mara continued.

“They told me one baby would go home with us.””

“And the other?””

She couldn't answer.

Daniel looked at Victor.

“You were always planning this.””

Victor's expression remained calm.

“We were planning for many possibilities.””

“What possibilities?””

Victor looked at the boys.

“One of them was going to be raised by you.””

Daniel felt sick.

“The other by Hale.””

“Yes.””

“No.””

Victor smiled.

“That's where you're wrong.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You're telling me you created two children?””

“Not exactly.””

“Then what?””

Victor looked at Mara.

“Tell him.””

Mara shook her head.

Victor sighed.

“She's still protecting you.””

Daniel's voice broke.

“Mara, tell me.””

She looked at him.

“The children were created from different genetic combinations.””

Daniel stared.

“Whose?””

Mara glanced toward Charlotte.

“Charlotte's.””

Daniel's eyes widened.

Victor explained calmly.

“Charlotte was the original donor.””

Daniel looked at the girl he had spent five years mourning.

“You were using our daughter?””

“Her genetic material was valuable.””

Charlotte wrapped her arms around herself.

“I was a baby.””

Victor's face didn't change.

“Exactly.””

Daniel wanted to hit him.

Instead, he stepped between Victor and Charlotte.

“You're not touching her again.””

Victor smiled.

“You still don't understand.””

“Then make me understand.””

Victor pointed toward Noah.

“That child was designed to replace a weakness in your family line.””

Daniel stared.

“My family line?””

“Your genetics had a rare compatibility with Charlotte's.””

Daniel's eyes moved between the children.

“And Eli?””

Victor nodded.

“Eli was built from the same source material.””

Daniel's stomach turned.

“You cloned her.””

Victor didn't answer directly.

“We refined what nature had already provided.””

Charlotte's face went pale.

“That's why I was kept here.””

“Yes.””

“And Noah?””

Victor looked at Daniel.

“Your son was the successful version.””

Daniel felt dizzy.

He looked at Noah.

The little boy's eyes were confused.

“Daddy?””

Daniel crouched immediately.

“You're okay.””

“Who is that man?””

Daniel pulled him close.

“Someone who can't hurt you.””

Victor smiled.

“That's what your father told you for six years.””

Daniel glared at him.

“Enough.””

He turned toward Eli.

The boy stood motionless near the broken enclosure.

Daniel slowly approached him.

“Eli.””

The boy looked up.

“Are you cold?””

Eli nodded.

Daniel removed his coat and wrapped it around him.

The boy stared at the coat.

Nobody had apparently done something that simple for him in a long time.

“Does it feel better?””

Eli nodded again.

“Thank you.””

Daniel swallowed.

“What happened to you here?””

Eli looked toward Victor.

He hesitated.

“I don't know everything.””

“Tell me what you do know.””

“They said I was Noah.””

“Why?””

“Because when I was little, they showed me pictures.””

“Pictures of my son?””

“Yes.””

“And told you that was you?””

Eli nodded.

“They said I was supposed to replace him.””

Daniel's stomach clenched.

“Replace him how?””

Eli lowered his voice.

“When he got sick.””

Daniel remembered Ethan's words.

He wasn't supposed to survive.

He looked at Noah.

“What sickness?””

Mara answered.

“Nothing.””

Daniel turned.

“What?””

“He wasn't sick.””

“But Ethan said—”

“He was tested.””

“For what?””

Mara's eyes filled.

“Compatibility.””

“With Charlotte?””

“Yes.””

Daniel understood.

“They weren't trying to save Noah.””

Mara looked away.

“They were trying to create someone who could.””

Daniel stared at the children.

Two boys.

One raised in love.

One raised in a laboratory.

Both built around a girl who had never been given a choice.

Charlotte stepped closer.

“So I was the bridge.””

Nobody answered.

She looked at Mara.

“You used me to make them.””

Mara began crying.

“I didn't know.””

“But you signed the papers.””

“I thought I was signing consent for medical treatment.””

Victor smiled.

“She thought many things.””

Daniel turned toward him.

“What happened to the original documents?””

“Safe.””

“Where?””

Victor pointed toward the ceiling.

“Not here.””

Daniel moved closer.

“You're going to tell me.””

“No.””

A sharp metallic sound came from behind Victor.

Several armed men stepped into the corridor.

Daniel pulled Noah and Eli behind him.

Charlotte grabbed Mara's hand.

Ethan, pale from blood loss, raised his weapon from the floor.

“Daniel…”

Daniel looked back.

“You still alive?””

“Barely.””

“Can you move?””

“Not well.””

Victor smiled.

“Ethan, you were always too sentimental.””

Ethan's eyes hardened.

“My father taught me better.””

Victor's smile vanished.

“Your father taught you obedience.””

“No.””

Ethan slowly stood.

“He taught me what happens when you confuse power with ownership.””

Victor raised his hand.

The armed men lifted their weapons.

Daniel's heart hammered.

“Everyone stay still.””

Mara whispered, “Daniel…”

He looked at her.

“What?””

“I need you to trust me.””

He almost laughed.

“That's a difficult request right now.””

“I know.””

She stepped forward.

Victor watched her carefully.

“What are you doing?””

Mara kept walking.

“I’m ending this.””

Victor's face hardened.

“You won't.””

Mara looked directly at him.

“You forgot something.””

“What?””

“I was there when the system was built.””

Victor's expression changed.

Mara reached into her coat.

Daniel tensed.

She pulled out a small silver key.

Victor went completely still.

Charlotte stared.

“What is that?””

Mara held it up.

“The master access key.””

Victor's voice lowered.

“You said you destroyed it.””

“I lied.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You had this all along?””

“I stole it the night Charlotte disappeared.””

Victor stepped forward.

“Give it to me.””

“No.””

He nodded toward the armed men.

One of them moved.

Mara pressed the key against a small black device hidden beneath her sleeve.

A beep sounded.

Every screen in the basement lit up at once.

A file directory appeared.

Daniel saw dozens of names.

Children.

Dates.

Locations.

Payments.

Medical records.

Every secret.

Every experiment.

Every family destroyed by the organization was suddenly displayed across the walls.

Victor looked around.

“What did you do?””

“I uploaded everything.””

Daniel stared at Mara.

“To where?””

“Every major news organization.””

Ethan gave a weak smile.

“Good.””

Victor's face finally showed fear.

“You wouldn't.””

“I already did.””

The building's alarms erupted.

Phones began ringing.

Far away, sirens could be heard approaching.

Victor looked at the screens.

Then at Mara.

“You have no idea what you've done.””

Mara's voice was steady now.

“Yes, I do.””

She looked at Charlotte.

“I've spent fourteen years knowing exactly what I did.””

Daniel watched her.

For the first time, he saw something different in Mara.

Not fear.

Not shame.

Decision.

Victor suddenly lunged toward Charlotte.

Daniel moved first.

He slammed into Victor.

They crashed against the wall.

Victor struck him across the face.

Daniel barely felt it.

He grabbed Victor's coat.

“You took my daughter!””

Victor shoved him away.

“She was never yours.””

Daniel hit him.

Once.

Victor stumbled.

Daniel hit him again.

Mara shouted, “Daniel!””

He stopped.

Victor wiped blood from his lip.

“You still think this is about Charlotte.””

Daniel breathed heavily.

“It is.””

“No.””

Victor pointed toward Noah.

“It's about what comes next.””

Daniel looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

Victor smiled through the blood.

“You think destroying this facility ends the program?””

Daniel's expression hardened.

Victor's smile widened.

“There are twelve others.””

The alarm grew louder.

“What twelve?””

“Facilities.””

Victor looked toward the ceiling.

“Across the country.””

Daniel felt cold.

Mara whispered, “No.””

Victor continued.

“Charlotte isn't the only one.””

Daniel looked at Eli.

“How many children?””

Victor shrugged.

“Enough.””

Police sirens grew louder outside.

Ethan reached for his radio.

“They're here.””

Victor suddenly pulled something from his pocket.

A remote.

Daniel saw the button.

“What is that?””

Victor smiled.

“The reason I never needed to keep you alive.””

He pressed it.

Nothing happened.

Victor looked at the device.

Pressed again.

Still nothing.

Mara smiled faintly.

“I removed the detonator.””

Victor stared at her.

“You're lying.””

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“You stopped being in control the moment you walked into this house.””

Police burst through the basement entrance.

Weapons raised.

“DON'T MOVE!””

Victor slowly lifted his hands.

Daniel exhaled.

For the first time in years, he thought maybe it was over.

Then Noah tugged his sleeve.

“Daddy.””

Daniel looked down.

“What?””

Noah pointed at the wall.

A screen had just changed.

A new file opened automatically.

At the top was his name.

*NOAH CROSS — SUBJECT A*

Below it:

*BIOLOGICAL STATUS: UNCONFIRMED*

Daniel's heart stopped.

Then another line appeared.

*PARENTAL STATUS: REPLACEMENT*

Daniel stared.

“No.””

He looked at Mara.

“Mara…”

She couldn't speak.

The screen flashed again.

A final line appeared.

*ORIGINAL NOAH CROSS: DECEASED*

Daniel turned slowly toward his son.

Noah was crying.

And from behind him, Eli whispered,

May you like

“That isn't your son.””
