Chapter 6: The Voice Beneath the Floor
“That sounds like me.””
Daniel could barely hear Noah over the pounding of his own heart.
The voice beneath the floorboards came again.
“Daddy?””
Noah buried his face against Daniel’s side.
“That’s me.””
Daniel stared at the wooden floor.
“Noah, stay behind me.””
“But Daddy—”
“Now.””
Mara stepped closer, her face ghostly beneath the weak red emergency lights.
“That voice…”
Daniel turned.
“What?””
She was staring at the floor.
“That voice belongs to you.””
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Mara shook her head.
“I don't know.””
Another knock came from below.
Three slow taps.
Then silence.
Ethan raised his weapon.
“Everyone back.””
Daniel pulled Noah behind him.
Charlotte stood at the edge of the nursery doorway, staring toward the floor as if she recognized something Daniel couldn't.
“Charlotte,” Daniel said, “where is the basement entrance?””
She pointed toward the hallway.
“Under the stairs.””
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“Let's go.””
Mara grabbed his arm.
“No.””
Daniel turned.
“We don't have time.””
“You don't understand what you're hearing.””
“I understand that someone is down there.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“You heard Noah.””
Daniel stared at her.
“That wasn't Noah.””
Mara's eyes filled with tears.
“It was a recording.””
The three words froze the room.
“A recording?””
Mara nodded.
“Hale used our son's voice.””
Daniel felt sick.
“Why?””
“To lure me.””
“To lure you where?””
Mara looked toward the floor.
“Into the basement.””
Charlotte stepped closer.
“He used mine too.””
Daniel looked at her.
“When?””
“When I was little.””
Charlotte swallowed.
“I heard my own voice calling for help from rooms that were empty.””
Daniel's skin prickled.
“You heard yourself?””
She nodded.
“I thought I was going crazy.””
Mara shook her head.
“He wanted you to think you were.””
Ethan stared at the basement stairs.
“Then we have a problem.””
“What?””
“If that's a recording, someone triggered it.””
A metallic click came from below.
Ethan immediately raised his weapon.
A second click.
Then another.
Daniel instinctively pulled Noah backward.
The basement door under the stairs swung open.
No one was there.
The darkness beyond it seemed to breathe.
Ethan moved first.
“Stay behind me.””
Daniel followed.
Mara grabbed Charlotte's hand.
Charlotte pulled away.
“I know this place.””
“We don't have another choice,” Mara said.
Charlotte stared at her.
“You always say that.””
Mara flinched.
They descended.
The basement smelled of damp concrete and old paper.
A single bulb swung from the ceiling.
The walls were covered with shelves.
Boxes.
Files.
Photographs.
Daniel stopped.
“Oh my God.””
His life was everywhere.
Pictures of him leaving work.
Pictures of Noah at school.
Pictures of Mara.
Pictures of Charlotte as a baby.
There were photographs from inside Daniel's own bedroom.
His kitchen.
His car.
Even the hospital room where Noah had been born.
Daniel walked closer.
“Who took these?””
Ethan opened a metal cabinet.
“Not one person.””
Inside were hundreds of folders.
Different names.
Different dates.
Different handwriting.
“This isn't a private operation,” Ethan said.
Daniel looked at him.
“What is it?””
“A network.””
He pulled out a file.
“Hale is only one part.””
Daniel took the folder.
On the cover was a code.
*CROSS FAMILY — PHASE TWO*
Daniel opened it.
The first page contained his name.
The second contained Noah's.
The third contained Mara's.
But the fourth page made Daniel stop.
*SUBJECT: CHARLOTTE CROSS*
*STATUS: TRANSFERRED*
Then beneath it:
*BIOLOGICAL LINE: CONFIRMED*
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“What does biological line mean?””
Ethan didn't answer.
“Ethan.””
“I don't know.””
Daniel turned another page.
There was a photograph of Charlotte taken when she was three.
Beside it was another photograph.
Noah.
As a baby.
Daniel's heart began racing.
The dates were only six months apart.
He looked at Mara.
“You knew.””
“No.””
“You knew something.””
“I knew they were tracking both children.””
“Why are their files together?””
Mara shook her head.
“I don't know.””
Charlotte reached past Daniel and opened another folder.
Her hands started trembling.
“Dad.””
He looked down.
The folder contained medical records.
Not hers.
Noah's.
Daniel scanned the first page.
His son's bloodwork.
His genetic tests.
His birth records.
At the bottom was a name Daniel had never seen before.
*Dr. Evelyn Cross.*
Daniel's face tightened.
“Who is Evelyn Cross?””
Mara went completely still.
Daniel looked at her.
“Mara?””
She whispered,
“My sister.””
Silence.
“You have a sister?””
“I did.””
“What happened to her?””
“She died before I met you.””
Daniel looked back at the file.
“When?””
“Fourteen years ago.””
He turned another page.
A notation had been stamped across the document.
*GENETIC MATCH: 99.8%*
Daniel stared.
His hands began to shake.
“Match to what?””
Mara didn't answer.
“Match to what?””
She looked at Noah.
Then Charlotte.
And finally Daniel.
“To Charlotte.””
Daniel's mind went blank.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
He turned the pages faster.
There were test results.
Markers.
Charts.
Dates.
His daughter and his son shared an unusual genetic sequence.
Daniel looked up.
“They're siblings.””
Mara nodded.
“Yes.””
Daniel let out a breath.
“I already knew that.””
“No.””
Her voice trembled.
“You don't understand.””
Daniel stared.
“What don't I understand?””
“Charlotte isn't just Noah's sister.””
She looked at Ethan.
Ethan's face had changed.
“Mara,” he said quietly, “don't.””
She ignored him.
“She was used as a donor.””
Daniel went still.
“For what?””
Mara closed her eyes.
“For Noah.””
Daniel's stomach twisted.
“What are you talking about?””
Charlotte stepped backward.
“No.””
Mara moved toward her.
“I’m sorry.””
Charlotte shook her head.
“No.””
“When Noah was born—”
“Stop.””
“They used Charlotte's tissue.””
Charlotte backed into the wall.
“I was a baby.””
“Yes.””
“You let them?””
Mara's voice broke.
“I didn't know.””
“You knew enough to lie.””
“I found out years later.””
Charlotte stared at her.
“And you never told me.””
“I was trying to keep you alive.””
“You don't get to say that anymore.””
Daniel stepped between them.
“Enough.””
He turned to Mara.
“Exactly what did they take from Charlotte?””
Mara couldn't answer.
Ethan did.
“Stem cells.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Why?””
Ethan hesitated.
“Because Noah was born with a condition.””
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“What condition?””
“He wasn't supposed to survive.””
Daniel looked down at his son.
Noah stared back, confused and frightened.
“But he's healthy.””
“Yes.””
“Because of Charlotte?””
Ethan nodded.
“They used experimental treatment.””
Daniel felt dizzy.
“And the cost?””
Ethan looked at Charlotte.
“The treatment worked.””
“That wasn't my question.””
Ethan was silent.
Daniel stepped closer.
“What did they do to my daughter?””
Ethan's voice dropped.
“They kept her alive long enough to harvest what they needed.””
Daniel's blood ran cold.
Charlotte covered her ears.
“I don't remember.””
“That was the point,” Mara whispered.
Daniel stared at the files.
Fourteen years of secrets.
Fourteen years of lies.
And suddenly the whole architecture of his life looked different.
He looked at Mara.
“You gave them permission.””
Her eyes widened.
“No.””
“Then who did?””
“I signed one paper.””
Daniel's voice sharpened.
“What paper?””
“A medical consent form.””
“For Noah?””
“Yes.””
“And Charlotte?””
Mara shook her head.
“They told me it was anonymous.””
Daniel looked sick.
“Anonymous?””
“They said the donor was an unrelated child.””
Charlotte's face hardened.
“You were the mother.””
“I didn't know.””
“You signed it.””
“Yes.””
Charlotte looked away.
Daniel suddenly heard something.
A faint scratching sound.
From behind the wall.
He turned.
“Did you hear that?””
Everyone froze.
Scratch.
Scratch.
Scratch.
Noah whispered,
“Someone's there.””
Ethan crossed the basement.
He pressed his ear against the concrete.
“Back up.””
Daniel pulled Noah behind him again.
Ethan examined the wall.
There was a seam.
A hidden door.
He ran his fingers along it.
“There's something here.””
Daniel helped him clear away several boxes.
A keypad appeared.
Four digits.
Mara stared at it.
“I know that code.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What is it?””
She didn't answer.
“Mara.””
She whispered four numbers.
Ethan entered them.
The wall clicked.
The door opened.
Cold air rushed out.
Inside was another room.
Smaller.
Cleaner.
Modern.
And in the center stood a glass enclosure.
Daniel stepped closer.
His heart stopped.
Inside the enclosure was a chair.
Straps.
Medical equipment.
And dozens of children's drawings pinned to the wall.
Charlotte walked forward slowly.
She recognized them.
“These were mine.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You drew these?””
She nodded.
“When I was little.””
There was a photograph among the drawings.
A little girl sitting in the chair.
Charlotte.
Around six years old.
A woman stood behind her.
Daniel recognized her immediately.
Mara.
But Mara was not the only adult in the photograph.
Daniel stared at the second figure.
A man.
Young.
Dark hair.
A scar across his cheek.
Daniel's face went pale.
He knew him too.
The man had been in every family photograph after Charlotte disappeared.
Standing at the edge.
Watching.
Waiting.
Daniel whispered,
“Ethan.””
Ethan looked.
“That’s my father.””
Ethan went rigid.
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel pointed to the date.
The photograph had been taken twelve years earlier.
Ethan stared.
“My father died fifteen years ago.””
Mara stepped closer.
“He didn't.””
Ethan's face went white.
Daniel turned toward her.
“What was his name?””
Mara looked at Ethan.
“David Cole.””
Ethan staggered backward.
“No.””
Charlotte suddenly pointed toward the corner.
“There's something behind the chair.””
Daniel moved.
A small metal box was bolted to the floor.
He opened it.
Inside was a cassette tape.
And a handwritten note.
Daniel read it aloud.
*For Daniel, when Noah is old enough to understand why he was chosen.*
His heart pounded.
“Chosen?””
Mara whispered, “Daniel…”
He looked at her.
“What does that mean?””
Before she could answer, the old cassette player beside the chair clicked on by itself.
Static filled the room.
Then a man's recorded voice spoke.
Daniel recognized it immediately.
Victor Hale.
“Daniel Cross, if you're hearing this, Charlotte has already told you enough to make you dangerous.””
Daniel stared at the machine.
Victor continued.
“But she hasn't told you the truth.””
A pause.
Then:
“Your son was never the reason we needed Charlotte.””
Daniel’s breath caught.
Victor's next words turned his blood to ice.
“We needed Charlotte because she was carrying something neither of you knew existed.””
The recording crackled.
Then Victor said:
“Your daughter's blood contains the only thing that can prove who Noah really is.””
The tape stopped.
Noah suddenly looked up.
“Daddy?””
Daniel turned.
His son was staring at the glass enclosure.
There was a child standing inside it.
A little boy.
Same height.
Same face.
Same blue eyes.
Wearing Noah's exact jacket.
Daniel's heart stopped.
The boy raised one hand against the glass.
May you like
And mouthed,
“Help me.””
