Chapter 5 - THE MAN WHO SIGNED CLAIRE’S DEATH

Richard Sloan was seventy-six.
He had represented Carter family four decades.
He called himself “institutional memory.”
He was actually keeper of secrets.
The cassette voice.
“There cannot be an accident without a body.”
He argued he was warning Margaret not to fake death.
Then why signed paperwork?
He did not sign death certificate himself—lawyer can't. He arranged physician statement and petition.
The physician, Dr. Lewis Grant, now dead.
Records showed Richard supplied false car-crash documents from private investigator.
A burned abandoned vehicle registered to Claire? How? Margaret bought used vehicle in Claire's name before staged report? Too operational. Avoid details.
Better they exploited a real fatal accident involving unidentified young woman, then falsely linked Claire through personal effects. This is serious identity fraud. Could happen but risky. We don't need procedural details.
They used ambiguous accident and fabricated identification affidavit.
Richard filed petition of presumed death.
Margaret signed.
Robert was abroad and was told body identification confirmed.
When he returned he doubted.
Then found Claire.
Could he overturn then? Yes, but safety/legal warfare delayed.
Richard threatened disbarment? He had leverage that Robert had earlier hidden company tax issues. But not enough. Keep fear of guardianship and media.
Then current Richard had helped Margaret after Robert death.
He knew Claire returned.
He prepared settlement:
Claire receives $12 million and permanently waives historical trust claims, signs NDA, confirms she left voluntarily as teen.
She refused.
Then Margaret confined.
Did Richard know confinement?
Messages:
Margaret:
She is staying downstairs until she understands.
Richard:
Do not put that in writing.
There.
He knew enough.
Then:
Get signature and move her.
He participated.
Current obstruction/conspiracy strong.
Then Richard also told house staff Claire was “family patient under private care.”
He used authority.
Then Owen Pike, house manager, cooperated.
He cried.
“I thought Mrs. Carter had court order.”
Did he see?
No.
He should have.
He brought meals through side slot.
He heard Claire ask police once.
He told Margaret.
She said delusion.
He believed employer.
Would he face charges? Depending. He cooperated, perhaps no charge or lesser for failure, because he lacked intent but ignored warning signs. Could be civil/witness.
Then Daniel confronted Owen:
“She told you her name?”
“Yes.”
“And you knew family had dead daughter named Claire?”
Owen looked down.
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you ask?”
“I was told not to discuss family matters.”
There.
Hierarchy.
Again.
Then staff training/house culture later.
Then trust audit.
Margaret/Richard companies took $9m fees, but some services legitimate.
Independent forensic team classified $3.1m improper/unapproved.
Restitution claims.
No outrageous full $9m theft.
They also diverted $1.4m to Richard's advisory company.
Current.
Then Claire received restoration settlement from trust reserve/insurance/culpable parties, not from Daniel personally alone.
Her 35% beneficial interest reinstated prospectively, with accounting adjustment around $11m to compensate missed distributions after legal process.
Not entire $120m dumped.
Professional trustees.
Good.
Then Daniel’s branch reduced to correct 25% intended share going forward.
He remained wealthy.
No poverty punishment.
Then company voting.
Claire’s restored appointment power could nominate two independent trustees, not run company.
She selected professionals.
One employee representative.
Good.
She did not install friends.
Then Daniel asked:
“You don’t want chair?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I’m an engineer.”
Good.
Then:
“Grandpa chose firstborn rule badly.”
Interesting.
She did not worship will.
She proposed trust modernization with court:
No future firstborn control.
Equal descendant branches.
Independent governance.
Could she change? Through appointment power and court consent maybe.
She said:
“I spent life harmed by hierarchy. I’m not handing it to next generation.”
Powerful.
May you like
Daniel supported.
Then firstborn mythology died.
