Chapter 7 - THE CASSETTE HAD ONE MORE RECORDING

Forensics recovered second side.
Claire had never listened fully because battery died when young.
Digitized.
Younger Robert’s voice.
He entered Claire’s room after first confrontation.
Claire crying.
Robert:
“Tell me exactly what you heard.”
Claire:
“Mom said Daniel inherits if I die.”
Robert:
“Your mother is angry. That does not mean she will hurt you.”
Ouch.
He initially minimized.
Claire:
“You never believe me.”
Silence.
Then Robert:
“I’m listening now.”
This mirrored future.
Then later recording:
Margaret enters.
Argument.
Robert:
“There will be no change to Thomas’s will.”
Margaret:
“You let your father humiliate me.”
Robert:
“This is not about you.”
Margaret:
“It has always been about me being expected to manage everything and own nothing.”
There.
Class/power resentment.
Then:
“Claire is fourteen. She cannot control this family.”
Robert:
“She doesn’t. Trustees do.”
Margaret:
“Until twenty-five.”
So she feared future.
Then Richard enters.
Advises temporary psychiatric evaluation if Claire making accusations.
Robert says no.
But later he travels.
Margaret acts.
The tape showed premeditation to discredit, not necessarily fake death yet.
Then last recording months later? No, recorder not with Claire after hospitalization. Fine.
This tape strengthened historical civil case.
Then Daniel learned grandfather Thomas had deliberately skipped Margaret as trustee because he believed she was too controlling.
Had he been sexist? Could be partly.
Trust notes:
Margaret is capable but treats disagreement as betrayal.
Maybe accurate.
Also old patriarch had been harsh.
Margaret genuinely spent years working in family business without formal ownership.
Her resentment had basis.
Then she chose to direct it at daughter.
Important.
Claire said:
“She deserved compensation and respect.”
Then:
“She did not deserve my identity.”
Exactly.
Then trust settlement included review of Margaret’s legitimate unpaid work? Interesting.
Independent audit found Robert/Thomas had undercompensated her in early decades.
Some claim valid.
Court awarded separate marital/estate assets already? She was wealthy anyway. But acknowledging prevents simplistic.
Claire said:
“Pay what she is owed. Recover what she stole.”
Systems.
Excellent.
Then Daniel realized justice can do both.
Then Richard’s role.
He exploited Margaret’s resentment.
He earned fees.
He told her only way to get influence was Claire gone.
He benefited.
He was more financially cynical.
But Margaret made choices.
No scapegoat.
Then Claire visited Eleanor Bennett’s grave.
Woman who raised her teen years.
She called Eleanor “Aunt Ellie,” not Mom.
Eleanor had protected without stealing identity.
Claire kept Bennett surname for her.
Daniel joined.
He thanked grave? Fine.
Then they visited Robert.
Claire angry.
“You saved me and hid me.”
Both.
Daniel:
“He loved you.”
“I know.”
“That made it more confusing.”
Yes.
Then she left cassette copy at grave? No, too symbolic.
She kept archive.
Then company museum/family records.
Old family tree listed Claire:
197?–2003 deceased.
They corrected.
No big ceremony.
Just:
Claire Bennett Carter — living.
She laughed.
“Low bar.”
Then family portrait restored? She refused giant portrait.
Good.
Then Daniel asked to add photo of them now to house.
May you like
She agreed small frame.
Normal.
