Chapter 6 - CLAIRE DID NOT MOVE INTO THE MANSION

Everyone assumed Claire would reclaim house.
She laughed.
“No.”
The mansion was held by Carter Family Trust.
Margaret had lifetime occupancy? Current criminal restrictions.
Daniel had been living separately? He discovered basement while visiting family estate? Opening implies hidden basement door maybe father's home. We can set Daniel had returned to family mansion to inspect after father death while Margaret still lived. Fine.
After arrest, occupancy question.
Claire did not want.
Daniel did not automatically take.
Trust appointed property manager.
Margaret removed under court order pending case.
House eventually held/sold later.
Claire rented apartment downtown she liked.
She had a career.
Friends.
Life.
She was not waiting in basement for throne.

Then one day she said:
“You used to sleep with one sock off.”
Daniel laughed.
“You remember?”
“You were six.”
Then:
“You cried when I left room.”
He cried now.
Some memory.
Then she gave him photograph.
Young Claire holding baby Daniel.
It had been in metal box.
He kept.
Not because heir.
Sister.
Then Daniel asked:
“Did you hate me because you thought I got your inheritance?”
Claire took long.
“When I was twenty, yes.”
Honest.
“Now?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I learned you were a child too.”
Then:
“But when you became adult and never asked questions, I was angry again.”
Fair.
Then Daniel said:
“I thought grief was closed.”
“Because Mom closed it.”
Yes.
Then he asked:
“Would you have wanted me to find you?”
“Yes.”
That hurt.
Then:
“But I also could have contacted you after eighteen.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“Fear.”
Same.
Claire had Robert and Eleanor warning Margaret could retaliate.
She built life.
Then shame of reappearing.
Then:
“I am not innocent in twenty-three years of silence either.”
Important.
But responsibility not equal.
She was original victim.
Then therapy siblings? Could.
They attended family therapist.
No forced.
Then Margaret.
Claire refused visits initially.
Daniel did visit.
Why?
He needed answers.
Noah? none.
Then trial.
Margaret pleaded? Evidence strong.
She eventually accepted plea to unlawful imprisonment, fraud/forgery, obstruction, administration of drug without consent, ongoing trust misconduct.
Historical false-death aspects partly civil/time-barred, but used context.
Richard Sloan convicted/pleaded conspiracy, fraud, obstruction, fiduciary crimes; disbarred permanently.
Margaret substantial sentence.
Not life.
Age considered, restitution.
Then she spoke at sentencing.
“I loved both children.”
Claire stared.
Then:
“I believed control was how I kept family safe.”
Judge:
“You erased one child to control assets assigned to her.”
Margaret cried.
“Yes.”
Then:
“And this year?”
“I imprisoned her because I was afraid truth would take everything.”
Judge:
“It took more because you imprisoned her.”
Correct.
Then Claire statement.
“I do not want my mother described as someone who hid me because she loved Daniel more.”
Then:
“She hid me because she wanted control.”
Important.
“Daniel was used too.”
Then:
“I want my legal history corrected.”
No revenge.
Then Daniel spoke:
“I benefited from a lie I did not know as child and did not examine as adult.”
There.
Then:
“I am responsible for the second part.”
Good.
Then restitution/governance.
