Chapter 12: The Man Who Controlled My Recovery

The laboratory erupted into chaos.

Technicians shouted over one another.

Agent Grant demanded an immediate network shutdown.

Daniel moved behind my wheelchair and helped me stabilize my injured leg.

On the central monitor, the list of forty-seven soldiers began changing.

One after another, their mobility systems displayed the same warning.

*REMOTE OVERRIDE INITIATED.*

“Stop it!”” I shouted.

The lead technician shook his head.

“The command is coming from the central authorization server. We can't block it locally.””

“Then disconnect the server.””

“If we do that without isolating the individual devices, some systems may lock in their current positions.””

I looked at the screen.

Some of those soldiers might be standing.

Some might be walking.

Others could be operating vehicles.

A sudden shutdown could cause serious injuries.

“Can we isolate the command?””

“Possibly. But we need the administrator's recovery key.””

I remembered the original code.

I had designed the recovery system with a manual emergency override.

It was buried beneath three encryption layers.

“Open the original architecture.””

The technician turned toward me.

“We're trying.””

“No. You're looking at the modified version. Open the first prototype.””

He pulled up the file.

I studied the interface.

The original recovery key was still there.

I had created it after an early test when the system malfunctioned and locked my prosthetic in a fixed position.

I remembered sitting in the laboratory, frustrated, while Nathan laughed and told me that every good invention needed a way to rescue its creator.

I had named the emergency protocol after him.

*COLE RECOVERY SEQUENCE.*

“Enter the sequence,” I said.

The technician typed.

Nothing happened.

“Again.””

He tried a second time.

The screen flashed red.

*AUTHORIZATION DENIED.*

I leaned closer.

“They changed the encryption.””

Daniel looked at the screen.

“Can you bypass it?””

“Not without the original key.””

I closed my eyes.

Then I remembered the manual recovery phrase.

Nathan had insisted that I write it down and store it separately.

The phrase wasn't in the system.

It was in the original field notebook.

The notebook Derek had stolen from my house.

I opened my eyes.

“Where is the storage box?””

Agent Grant looked at me.

“Which box?””

“My original military storage box. The one stolen from my house.””

“We recovered it this morning.””

I stared at her.

“You did?””

She nodded.

“It was found in a vehicle registered to Halston Recovery Systems.””

“Where is it?””

“Evidence storage.””

“Get it.””

She immediately called an investigator.

Twenty minutes later, the box arrived.

It was dented along one side, and the lock had been forced.

I opened it.

Inside were old photographs, technical notes, and several handwritten pages.

I searched through them.

My hands were shaking.

Then I found it.

A small yellow note folded inside the back cover of my original field notebook.

Nathan's handwriting.

*If the system ever turns against its operator, remember the first promise we made.*

I stared at the sentence.

The first promise.

I remembered that day.

The day I had presented the first working prototype.

Nathan had asked what the system was supposed to do.

I had answered:

“Give people their independence back.””

He had smiled.

“Then make sure nobody can use it to take that independence away.””

The emergency phrase was hidden in the original mission statement.

I typed the words into the console.

*INDEPENDENCE IS NOT A PRIVILEGE. IT IS A RIGHT.*

The system paused.

Then the screen changed.

<badge color="success">Emergency recovery accepted</badge>

A new interface appeared.

The technician stared at it.

“You've accessed the original command layer.””

“Can you stop the override?””

He nodded.

“Give me thirty seconds.””

I watched the list of soldiers.

One device.

Two.

Three.

Their statuses began changing.

*OVERRIDE CANCELLED.*

*OVERRIDE CANCELLED.*

*OVERRIDE CANCELLED.*

When the final name turned green, I exhaled.

All forty-seven soldiers were disconnected from the unauthorized command.

But the central server remained active.

And my father still had access.

Agent Grant approached.

“We have a location on General Hayes. The surveillance team is moving.””

I looked at her.

“I want to go.””

“Absolutely not.””

“He controls the system. He knows how to bypass the recovery protocol.””

“We'll get him.””

“Then he'll have time to erase everything.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“She should come.””

Agent Grant turned sharply.

“Daniel, this isn't your decision.””

“Claire designed the original architecture. If he activates another override, she may be the only person who can stop it.””

I nodded.

“I can help.””

Agent Grant looked at me for several seconds.

Then she finally agreed.

The property was surrounded by tall trees and a long stone wall.

Two federal vehicles were parked near the entrance.

The house looked like an ordinary country estate.

White columns.

Large windows.

A neatly trimmed lawn.

A small American flag hanging beside the front door.

Nothing about it suggested that the man inside had spent years manipulating military technology.

We entered with a search warrant.

“Federal agents!””

No one answered.

The living room was empty.

A cup of coffee sat on the table.

Still warm.

Agent Grant signaled the team to search the upper floor.

I moved toward the study.

The door stood open.

Inside were shelves filled with military awards, photographs, and framed certificates.

My father's life displayed like a museum.

I stopped in front of one photograph.

It showed my parents holding me as a baby.

My father was smiling.

My mother looked happy.

I reached toward the frame.

A voice spoke behind me.

“You look just like her.””

I turned.

My father stood in the doorway.

He wore a dark sweater and gray trousers.

No uniform.

No medals.

Just an ordinary old man.

But his eyes were cold.

“Hello, Claire.””

I stared at him.

“You're alive.””

He smiled.

“Clearly.””

“You let me bury you.””

“I had no choice.””

“You had eleven years to tell me.””

“I was protecting you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“By helping Derek destroy my leg?””

His smile disappeared.

“I never ordered anyone to destroy your leg.””

“You authorized the surgery.””

“I authorized the emergency procedure.””

“You knew what they were doing.””

He looked toward the desk.

“Your mother would have wanted you to understand.””

“Don't use her.””

His jaw tightened.

“Your mother never understood the scale of what we were building.””

I stepped closer.

“She understood that you were turning wounded soldiers into test subjects.””

“That's not what happened.””

“Forty-seven people were connected to a system that could override their prosthetics without their consent.””

“The technology saved lives.””

“It also put those lives under your control.””

He walked toward the desk.

“You have no idea how much money and influence were required to build Project Phoenix.””

I stared at him.

“That's what this was about?””

“Your invention could have changed military medicine.””

“Then why steal it?””

“Because you wouldn't have agreed to the modifications.””

“Of course I wouldn't!””

He raised his voice.

“You were young! Idealistic! You thought the military existed to protect people. You had no understanding of the larger picture.””

I looked at him.

“And you did?””

He didn't answer.

Then I asked the question I had been carrying since I read his letter.

“What happened to Mom?””

His face changed.

For the first time, he looked genuinely uncomfortable.

“She became difficult.””

“That's all?””

“She wanted to expose the project.””

“Did you have her killed?””

He looked away.

I felt my chest tighten.

“Dad.””

He finally met my eyes.

“I arranged for her to disappear.””

The room seemed to stop.

“You killed her?””

“I didn't intend for her to die.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

He sat down.

“Evelyn arranged a meeting. Your mother was supposed to be transferred to a secure location until the investigation ended.””

“And?””

“The transport was intercepted.””

“By whom?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“Derek.””

My stomach dropped.

“Derek killed my mother?””

My father nodded slowly.

“He was there.””

I gripped the wheelchair armrests.

“Why?””

“Because your mother had discovered the original financial agreements. She knew Derek had been stealing funds and using your research.””

I stared at him.

“You knew he killed her, and you still let me marry him?””

My father looked at me.

“I thought I could control him.””

A bitter laugh escaped my throat.

“You couldn't even control your own choices.””

He stood abruptly.

“Claire, you need to listen. Derek is not the biggest threat.””

I watched him.

“Who is?””

He walked to a locked cabinet and entered a code.

Inside was a thick folder.

He removed it and placed it on the desk.

“The person who funded the original operation.””

I opened the folder.

A list of financial transfers appeared.

The money had originated from several private companies.

One name appeared repeatedly.

*NORTHSTAR DEFENSE GROUP.*

I looked up.

“Who owns it?””

My father swallowed.

“Colonel Thomas Reddick.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“Michael's father?””

He nodded.

“Reddick financed the entire operation.””

“But he said he was protecting me.””

“He was protecting his son.””

I stared at the documents.

Then my father handed me one final page.

It contained a photograph of Colonel Reddick standing beside a man in a military uniform.

The man was Derek.

But it was the date that made me freeze.

The photograph had been taken yesterday.

My father leaned closer.

“Claire, there's one more thing.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He pointed to the back of the photograph.

A handwritten message appeared beneath the date.

*Phase Two begins after Claire's death.*

I looked at my father.

“Whose death?””

He didn't answer.

Then someone outside shouted.

A gunshot shattered the silence.

May you like

My father fell to the floor.

And as I turned toward the window, I saw Derek standing on the lawn, holding a weapon and looking directly at me.
