Chapter 14: Room 804
Northstar Medical Center looked more like a private hotel than a hospital.
Marble floors.
Soft lighting.
Security cameras positioned at every entrance.
The kind of place where wealthy people went to disappear without asking questions.
Agent Grant led the team through the main lobby.
Nathan walked beside me.
He had explained what happened after the explosion while we traveled.
He had survived, but his injuries were severe.
Someone had pulled him from the wreckage before the rescue team arrived.
He had been taken to a private medical facility and kept under an assumed identity.
When he regained consciousness, he discovered that the official military report listed him as dead.
He had tried to contact me.
But every attempt was intercepted.
“Why didn't you go to the authorities?”” I asked.
Nathan looked down.
“Because Reddick controlled the investigation.””
“You could have contacted another unit.””
“I did.””
“And?””
“They disappeared.””
I stared at him.
He continued.
“Eventually, I learned that someone was using your rehabilitation project to track every person connected to the original mission.””
I remembered the remote override.
The payments.
The modified records.
“So you went underground.””
“I had to.””
He looked at me.
“I never stopped trying to find you.””
I wanted to believe him.
But there had been too many lies.
Too many people who had told me they were protecting me while quietly destroying my life.
“Why did you finally contact me?””
“Because Michael found something.””
“What?””
Nathan hesitated.
“The original recording of the explosion.””
I turned toward him.
“You have it?””
“Michael recovered it from a damaged vehicle recorder. It contains the voice of the person who activated the device.””
“Who?””
Nathan looked toward the elevator.
“Thomas Reddick.””
Room 804 was at the end of a private corridor.
Two security guards stood outside.
Agent Grant showed them her warrant.
“Step aside.””
One guard reached for his radio.
The other moved toward his jacket.
Nathan reacted immediately.
“Hands where I can see them!””
The guards froze.
Federal agents restrained them.
I looked through the narrow window in the door.
A woman sat beside the bed.
Her hair was silver now.
Her shoulders were thinner.
But I recognized her.
My mother.
She was reading a book.
For a moment, I couldn't breathe.
Then I opened the door.
“Mom?””
The book slipped from her hands.
She looked up.
Her face changed.
“Claire?””
I rolled forward.
She stood so quickly that the chair fell backward.
“Oh, my God.””
She rushed toward me.
I reached for her.
She dropped to her knees beside my wheelchair and wrapped her arms around me.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
I buried my face against her shoulder.
She smelled like lavender.
The same scent I remembered from childhood.
“Mom,” I whispered.
She pulled back and touched my face.
“My baby.””
I started crying.
“I thought you were dead.””
“I know.””
“Eleven years.””
“I know, sweetheart.””
“Why?””
She closed her eyes.
“Your father told me you would be killed if I contacted you.””
I pulled away.
“Dad knew where you were?””
She nodded.
“He arranged everything.””
I looked at her.
“Did he know about my surgery?””
Her eyes filled.
“Yes.””
I felt the old anger rising.
“Did you know?””
“No, Claire. I swear I didn't know they would hurt you.””
She reached for my hand.
“I tried to escape when I learned what they were planning. But Evelyn found out.””
I stared at her.
“Evelyn?””
My mother nodded.
“She was the one who arranged my transfer here.””
“Why didn't you tell anyone?””
“I did. But every letter was intercepted. Every phone call was monitored.””
She looked toward Nathan.
“He eventually found me.””
Nathan nodded.
“Michael helped us.””
My mother looked at me.
“Where is he?””
Nathan opened the adjoining door.
A young man sat in a wheelchair near the window.
His face was thinner than I remembered.
But his eyes were the same.
Michael Reddick.
The boy I had pulled from the burning vehicle.
He looked up.
“Commander Hayes.””
I smiled through my tears.
“Michael.””
He tried to stand.
Nathan stopped him.
“Easy.””
Michael laughed weakly.
“I've been waiting three years to say thank you properly.””
I shook my head.
“You don't owe me anything.””
He looked down at his hands.
“Yes, I do.””
He reached toward a small bag beside his chair and removed a compact recording device.
“This is why your father-in-law wanted me dead.””
I frowned.
“What's on it?””
“The original convoy recording.””
He pressed a button.
A burst of static filled the room.
Then a familiar voice emerged.
Colonel Thomas Reddick.
“Target vehicle is in position.””
Another voice answered.
Evelyn.
“Make sure the girl doesn't leave the road.””
Then a third voice.
Derek.
“What about Michael?””
Reddick replied:
“He knows too much. Neither of them should come back.””
I felt sick.
The recording continued.
A final voice spoke.
My father.
“Proceed.””
My mother covered her mouth.
I looked at Nathan.
He nodded.
“The explosion was deliberate. Your father, Derek, Evelyn, and Reddick all knew about it.””
Michael stopped the recording.
“But there's more.””
He opened another file.
A financial ledger appeared.
It showed that Northstar Defense Group had been paying Halston Recovery Systems for years.
But one final payment stood out.
Twenty million dollars.
Transferred three days earlier.
Recipient:
*HALSTON FAMILY TRUST.*
I looked at the name.
“Who owns that trust?””
Michael turned the screen toward me.
My name appeared.
I stared.
“What?””
Nathan leaned closer.
“That's impossible.””
My mother looked at the document.
Then she began shaking.
“Claire,” she whispered.
I turned.
“What?””
She pointed to the signature.
“That's not your name.””
I looked again.
The trust had been created using my identity.
But the beneficiary was not me.
It was someone else.
Someone whose name appeared in the next line.
*THOMAS REDDICK — SOLE AUTHORIZED BENEFICIARY.*
I looked at Agent Grant.
“He used my identity to move twenty million dollars?””
She nodded.
“And according to the transfer records, the money was released this morning.””
“Where did it go?””
She checked the details.
Her expression hardened.
“An offshore account.””
Nathan stepped forward.
“Then Reddick is preparing to disappear.””
My phone vibrated.
An incoming message.
Unknown number.
*You have your mother. You have your evidence. Now leave the country.*
A second message followed.
*Or I'll finish what I started with your family.*
I showed it to Agent Grant.
She immediately called the surveillance team.
But before she could finish, another notification appeared.
A photograph.
Colonel Reddick standing outside the hospital.
He was holding a small suitcase.
And beside him stood Derek's mother, Evelyn.
I looked through the room's window.
Across the hospital courtyard, a black car was pulling away.
“That's them,” I said.
Nathan rushed toward the door.
Agent Grant followed.
I looked at my mother.
“Stay here.””
She grabbed my hand.
“Claire, please be careful.””
I squeezed her fingers.
“I've spent three years learning how to stand on my own again.””
I looked toward the hallway.
“I'm not letting them take anything else from us.””
As I entered the elevator, my phone rang.
It was Derek.
I answered.
His voice was strangely calm.
“Claire, before you arrest Thomas, there's something you need to know.””
“What?””
He laughed quietly.
“Your mother isn't the only person he kept hidden.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Who else?””
Derek paused.
Then he said:
“Your daughter.””
The elevator doors opened.
I stopped breathing.
I had never had a daughter.
At least, that was what Derek had told me after my injury.
He had said the pregnancy hadn't survived.
He had said the doctors couldn't save the baby.
But Derek continued speaking.
May you like
“She's alive, Claire.””
And then the call ended.
