Chapter 7: My Husband Was in the Operating Room

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

Dr. Warren lay on the hallway floor, blood spreading beneath his body. Two federal agents had the armed man pinned against the wall. Another shouted for an ambulance.

But all I could hear was the sentence Dr. Warren had whispered.

*Derek held the scalpel.*

My husband.

The man who had kissed my forehead before surgery.

The man who had promised to stay beside me.

The man who had told me I was beautiful when I woke up with one leg missing.

He had been there.

“Commander Hayes, step back!””

An agent grabbed my wheelchair handles and pulled me away from the doorway.

I fought against him.

“Don't touch me! I need to speak to the doctor!””

“Ma'am, he's receiving medical attention.””

“He knows what happened to my leg!””

The agent looked toward Dr. Warren.

Then his expression changed.

A paramedic rushed through the front door with a medical bag.

I watched them work.

Dr. Warren's eyes opened briefly.

He turned his head toward me.

His lips moved.

I couldn't hear him.

Then the paramedic leaned closer.

“Sir, can you tell me your name?””

Dr. Warren tried to speak.

A few seconds later, his eyes closed.

I grabbed the agent's sleeve.

“Did he say anything?””

The agent looked uncomfortable.

“He gave us a statement before collapsing.””

“What did he say?””

The agent glanced at his colleague.

“He said Derek Halston was present during your original surgery.””

I felt something inside me break.

Not because I was learning that my husband had betrayed me.

That part had already happened.

I was beginning to understand that the betrayal had started before I even woke up.

At the hospital, federal investigators separated me from the medical team.

They wanted to know exactly what Dr. Warren had told me.

I repeated every word.

Then I asked for a copy of the original surgical records.

Agent Melissa Grant, a woman in her early forties with short brown hair, sat across from me.

“Commander, we have reason to believe the hospital records were altered after the procedure.””

“By whom?””

“We're investigating.””

“Was my husband there?””

She opened a folder.

“We found his visitor credentials in the hospital's security archive.””

My stomach tightened.

“Show me.””

She turned the laptop toward me.

The screen displayed a security photograph from the night of my operation.

Derek stood outside the surgical ward.

He wore a gray sweater and held a paper cup.

The timestamp was 11:43 p.m.

I stared at the image.

“That isn't proof he entered the operating room.””

“No,” Agent Grant replied.

“But we found another recording.””

She opened a second file.

This one showed Derek walking through a restricted corridor with a hospital administrator.

He carried a small document envelope.

The administrator opened a secure door.

Derek disappeared inside.

My throat went dry.

“How long was he in there?””

“Twenty-seven minutes.””

“What happened afterward?””

Agent Grant paused.

“He left with the same envelope.””

I looked away.

For three years, I had believed Derek was waiting outside while surgeons fought to save my life.

Now I was learning he had walked into a restricted medical area while I was unconscious.

“Did he sign anything?””

“We found an authorization form bearing your name. It appears to have been submitted after you were already under anesthesia.””

“Who signed it?””

Agent Grant placed a photograph in front of me.

Derek's signature.

I recognized the sharp downward stroke at the end.

I had seen it thousands of times on birthday cards, bank documents, and Christmas gifts.

“Why would he do this?””

“We don't know yet.””

I stared at her.

“Then find out.””

She nodded.

“There is something else. Your husband has been notified that federal agents are investigating the medical records.””

I looked up.

“When?””

“About forty minutes ago.””

My phone rang.

Derek.

I watched his name appear.

Agent Grant gestured toward the recording device.

“Answer it.””

I pressed the screen.

“Hello?””

“Claire!””

His voice was frantic.

“Where are you? I've been trying to reach you.””

“At the hospital.””

“I heard something happened at the house. Are you hurt?””

I looked at the bandage on my wrist where the door had struck me.

“I'm fine.””

“Thank God. Listen, I need you to come home.””

“Why?””

“Because people are saying terrible things about me.””

I almost laughed.

“Are they?””

“Claire, someone is setting me up. Daniel, that woman from the military office, all of them. They're trying to destroy our marriage.””

“Our marriage?””

He went quiet.

Then his voice softened.

“Baby, I know things have been difficult. I know I've said things I shouldn't have. But we're still family.””

I closed my eyes.

“Were you at the hospital during my surgery?””

Silence.

“Derek?””

“Who told you that?””

I felt my heart pounding.

“Were you there?””

“I visited you.””

“Inside the surgical ward?””

“Claire, you were unconscious. You don't remember everything.””

“Did you sign an authorization form?””

He exhaled sharply.

“Your mother-in-law was handling the paperwork.””

“I'm asking about you.””

His voice changed.

“Why are you interrogating me?””

“Because Dr. Warren said you were in the operating room.””

A long silence followed.

Then Derek laughed.

It was a small, ugly sound.

“Dr. Warren is a dying man. He's confused.””

“Did you hold the scalpel?””

“Don't be ridiculous.””

“Answer me.””

“Claire, I helped the doctors because they needed someone to assist with the procedure.””

I stopped breathing.

“What?””

“I was trying to save you!””

“You're not a surgeon!””

“I didn't cut anything important.””

The room seemed to disappear.

I looked at Agent Grant.

She had stopped writing.

Her eyes were fixed on me.

I spoke slowly.

“You just admitted you were inside the operating room.””

Derek realized his mistake.

“That's not what I meant.””

“You said you assisted the doctors.””

“I was holding equipment.””

“What equipment?””

He didn't answer.

Then his voice became cold.

“You should be careful, Claire. You don't know what happened that night.””

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“I know what happened to my leg.””

“No. You know what they told you.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

Derek lowered his voice.

“Your leg was already damaged beyond repair. I did what I had to do.””

I looked at Agent Grant.

She quietly motioned for me to continue.

“Who told you to do it?””

Derek said nothing.

Then I heard another voice in the background.

Evelyn.

“Derek! Hang up!””

The call ended.

Agent Grant immediately stood.

“We need to locate him.””

But before she could leave, her phone rang.

She answered.

Her expression changed.

“What do you mean the hospital archive is gone?””

She listened for several seconds.

Then she looked at me.

“Someone has accessed the original operating-room recording.””

“Derek?””

“We don't know.””

She ended the call.

A moment later, an investigator entered carrying a tablet.

“We recovered a backup file from an off-site server.””

He placed it in front of Agent Grant.

She watched the first few seconds.

Then she turned the screen toward me.

The recording showed the operating room three years earlier.

I was unconscious on the table.

Dr. Warren stood beside the anesthesia equipment.

Evelyn was near the door.

And Derek was wearing a surgical gown.

He leaned toward the camera.

His lips moved.

The audio was damaged, but the technician had enhanced part of it.

One sentence was clear.

“Once she's permanently disabled, she'll have no choice but to give us the rights.””

I covered my mouth.

Then the recording continued.

Derek turned toward someone standing outside the camera's view.

A familiar voice answered.

“Make sure she survives.””

It was a man's voice.

Agent Grant paused the recording.

I looked at her.

“Who was that?””

She didn't answer.

Instead, she replayed the audio.

Then she whispered:

“Commander, I think we know who authorized the operation.””

And when she showed me the voice-identification report, I recognized the name immediately.

May you like

Colonel Thomas Reddick.

The father of the soldier I had saved.
