Chapter 3: The Vault
The store suddenly felt smaller.
Camille stood motionless beside the counter, staring at Victor.
“The family vault?””
Victor didn't answer.
She stepped closer.
“Dad, what agreement?””
Victor rubbed a hand across his mouth.
“Camille, you don't understand.””
“Then explain it.””
“I can't.””
“You can't?””
Her voice rose.
“You just watched a stranger walk in here and cancel a four-hundred-million-dollar acquisition. Then you called him by a name I've never heard. Now someone says there's an ownership agreement in our vault.””
Victor looked at Adrian.
“This is not your fight.””
Adrian's eyes stayed on him.
“It became my fight a long time ago.””
Camille turned sharply.
“What does that mean?””
Adrian didn't answer.
She moved toward him.
“Who are you?””
Victor stepped between them.
“Camille, stop.””
She looked at him.
“You're scared of him.””
Victor's silence answered her.
Camille's expression changed.
“My God.””
She looked back at Adrian.
“You're not an investor.””
Adrian gave the smallest nod.
“No.””
“Then what are you?””
“I told you.””
“You haven't told me anything.””
Adrian placed the contract folder flat on the counter.
“You don't want the answer.””
Camille laughed once.
“You don't get to decide that.””
“I think I do.””
“Why?””
Adrian looked at Victor.
“Because your father already did.””
Victor's face tightened.
“Don't bring her into this.””
“She was already in it.””
Camille stared at them.
“What did you do?””
Victor shook his head.
“Nothing.””
Adrian's expression hardened for the first time.
“That's not what the agreement says.””
He opened the folder.
The pages whispered against the polished counter.
He stopped at the signature page.
“Your father signed this twenty-three years ago.””
Camille looked down.
“Twenty-three years?””
“Yes.””
“What was the company worth then?””
Victor answered quietly.
“Very little.””
“And now?””
Victor didn't speak.
Adrian did.
“Four hundred million dollars.””
Camille looked at the contract.
Then at Adrian.
“You're saying my father promised something twenty-three years ago because he thought the company would fail?””
“No.””
Adrian's eyes stayed on Victor.
“He promised something because he knew exactly what the company would become.””
Victor suddenly slammed his palm onto the counter.
“Enough!””
The sound echoed through the store.
Everyone flinched.
Victor pointed at Adrian.
“You have no right to walk into my business after all these years and threaten my family.””
Adrian didn't move.
“I haven't threatened anyone.””
“You canceled the acquisition.””
“Yes.””
“You'll destroy everything.””
“No.””
Adrian leaned slightly closer.
“I stopped you from selling something that wasn't entirely yours.””
Camille's eyes widened.
“What?””
Victor whispered, “Camille...””
She turned.
“What does he mean?””
Victor looked away.
“Dad.””
He still didn't answer.
Camille's voice cracked.
“What does he mean?””
Adrian picked up the phone.
“Call the vault administrator.””
Victor stepped forward.
“No.””
Adrian looked at him.
“Then you call.””
Victor's hands trembled.
Camille noticed.
Her father's hands had never trembled.
Not during negotiations.
Not during lawsuits.
Not even when his first company nearly collapsed.
She whispered, “You're really afraid.””
Victor looked at her.
“I wanted to protect you.””
“From what?””
“From what your grandfather started.””
Camille froze.
“My grandfather?””
Adrian's phone rang again.
He answered.
“Go ahead.””
The same woman spoke.
“We accessed the vault records.””
Adrian listened.
“What's there?””
A pause.
Then:
“There's a sealed box with three names on it.””
Adrian's eyes shifted toward Victor.
“Read them.””
The woman hesitated.
“Victor Hayes.””
Victor closed his eyes.
“Second name?””
“Camille Hayes.””
Camille stepped backward.
“And the third?””
The woman went silent.
Adrian's face became completely still.
Victor whispered, “Don't say it.””
Camille stared at him.
“Say it.””
The woman finally spoke.
“Adrian Cole.””
Nobody breathed.
Camille looked at Adrian.
Then at her father.
Then back at Adrian.
“You knew.””
Adrian slowly closed the contract folder.
“I knew there was a box.””
Camille shook her head.
“No.””
She pointed at the folder.
“You knew my name was on it.””
Adrian said nothing.
Victor stepped toward his daughter.
“Camille, listen to me.””
She backed away.
“Don't.””
“Please.””
“Don't touch me.””
Victor stopped.
Adrian slipped the folder beneath his arm.
Then his phone vibrated one final time.
He looked at the screen.
A photograph had arrived.
It showed the sealed box inside the Hayes family vault.
Three names were engraved into the metal.
But beneath the names was a fourth line.
Camille leaned forward.
“What does that say?””
Adrian stared at the photograph.
For the first time, his calm expression broke.
“It says the person who opens this box becomes the legal owner of the company.””
Victor whispered:
“That's why I never opened it.””
Adrian looked at Camille.
“Then we have a problem.””
May you like
The store doors locked automatically.
And somewhere behind the counter, Monica heard the vault system begin to unlock.
