Chapter 4: The Fourth Name

The lock clicked.

Then another.

Monica stood behind the counter, staring at the small security panel as a green light began pulsing.

“No,” Victor whispered.

Camille turned toward him.

“You said the vault was sealed.””

“It was.””

“Then why is it opening?””

Victor looked at Adrian.

“Because you triggered it.””

Adrian shook his head.

“I didn't.””

The security panel flashed again.

A mechanical voice filled the showroom.

*AUTHORIZED ACCESS.*

The guards immediately moved toward the entrance.

One tried the handle.

Locked.

“Mr. Hayes,” one guard said, “the doors aren't responding.””

Victor's face tightened.

“Kill the security system.””

Monica hurried toward the panel.

“I can't. It's running on an independent circuit.””

“Then shut the circuit down.””

“I'll lose the entire store.””

“Do it.””

Monica hesitated.

Adrian stepped forward.

“Don't.””

Victor glared at him.

“You've done enough.””

“If you cut power now, the vault could seal permanently.””

Victor stopped.

Camille looked between them.

“How do you know that?””

Adrian didn't answer.

She stepped closer.

“How do you know how our security system works?””

Adrian's eyes moved toward the panel.

“Because I designed the original protocol.””

Silence.

Victor's face went white.

Camille stared at him.

“You designed it?””

Adrian nodded.

“Twenty-three years ago.””

Camille slowly looked at her father.

“You told me Grandpa hired a private company.””

“He did.””

Adrian's voice was quiet.

“He hired me.””

Victor snapped, “You were nineteen.””

“Twenty.””

“You were a kid.””

“I was already building security systems for financial institutions.””

Camille's expression tightened.

“And you never mentioned him?””

Victor looked away.

Adrian gave a humorless smile.

“He didn't want you knowing I existed.””

The security panel beeped.

A small compartment beneath the counter opened.

Inside was a black access card.

Monica stared at it.

“That's impossible.””

Victor whispered, “It shouldn't still work.””

Adrian reached inside and took the card.

The moment his fingers touched it, the panel changed.

*IDENTITY VERIFIED.*

Camille stepped back.

“What exactly did my father sign?””

Adrian looked at the card.

“Something that belonged to someone else.””

“Whose?””

He didn't answer.

Victor did.

“My father's.””

Camille frowned.

“Grandpa owned the company.””

“Not originally.””

Adrian looked at Victor.

“Tell her.””

Victor's eyes hardened.

“No.””

Camille's voice rose.

“Tell me!””

Victor flinched.

Adrian slid the access card through the reader.

A hidden section of the marble wall beside the counter separated with a soft mechanical hiss.

Behind it was a narrow steel door.

Camille stared.

“There was a door here?””

Monica whispered, “I've worked here eleven years.””

Victor moved toward it.

“Stay back.””

Adrian blocked him.

“Why?””

“Because I said so.””

Adrian looked at him.

“You're still giving orders like the company belongs to you.””

Victor's voice dropped.

“It does.””

“Not according to the agreement.””

Camille stared at the steel door.

“What agreement?””

Adrian pointed at the contract folder.

“The one your father thought no one would ever find.””

He opened it again.

At the bottom of the final page was a faded seal.

Camille leaned closer.

“What is that?””

“A transfer clause.””

“To whom?””

Adrian looked at her.

“To me.””

Her mouth opened.

Victor shook his head.

“That's not what it says.””

Adrian turned the page around.

“Read it.””

Camille did.

Her eyes moved across the paragraph.

Then stopped.

She read it again.

“No.””

Victor whispered, “Camille.””

She looked up.

“It says the original controlling interest transfers to Adrian Cole upon breach.””

Victor said nothing.

“What breach?””

Adrian answered.

“An unauthorized sale.””

Camille looked at the acquisition documents.

“That's why you canceled it.””

“Yes.””

“You knew the sale would trigger this.””

“Yes.””

She stared at him.

“And my father knew.””

Adrian's gaze shifted to Victor.

“He knew.””

Victor suddenly grabbed the folder.

Adrian let him.

Victor tore through the pages until he reached the final section.

His hands were shaking.

Camille watched him.

“Dad?””

Victor stopped.

He stared at a paragraph she'd never seen.

His lips moved silently.

“What does it say?””

Victor folded the page.

“Nothing.””

Adrian's voice was cold.

“Read the last line.””

Victor looked at him.

“You don't want her to hear it?””

Camille stepped forward.

“I want everything.””

Victor closed his eyes.

Then he read.

“If the principal dies before the transfer is completed, ownership shall pass to the named successor.””

Camille frowned.

“Principal?””

Adrian looked toward her.

“That isn't the fourth name.””

Her face tightened.

“What fourth name?””

Adrian turned the page.

At the bottom was another line.

Nearly invisible.

A name had been handwritten there decades earlier.

Camille leaned toward it.

Then froze.

It wasn't Adrian.

It wasn't Victor.

It wasn't her.

It was her mother's name.

“That's impossible,” Camille whispered.

Victor stared at the page.

Adrian looked at him.

“Your mother didn't disappear.””

Camille's breathing stopped.

Victor's eyes filled with something she had never seen before.

Fear.

“No,” he whispered.

Adrian held the document up.

“She signed the original agreement.””

The steel door suddenly unlocked.

May you like

And from behind it came the sound of a phone ringing.

A phone that, according to Victor, had been disconnected twenty-three years ago.
