Chapter 5: The Woman Who Signed

The ringing stopped.

Nobody moved.

Camille stared at the steel door.

“My mother is dead.””

Victor looked at her.

“Yes.””

“You said she died.””

“I did.””

Adrian's expression remained controlled.

“I never said she was alive.””

Camille's eyes narrowed.

“Then what are you saying?””

Adrian looked toward the hidden room.

“I'm saying she left something behind.””

Victor stepped toward the door.

“I'm going in.””

Adrian caught his arm.

Victor jerked away.

“Let go.””

“You don't get to control what happens anymore.””

“This is my family.””

“And that's exactly why you're dangerous.””

Victor shoved him.

The guards immediately moved forward.

Adrian barely reacted.

“Everybody stays where they are,” he said.

His voice wasn't loud.

It didn't need to be.

The guards stopped.

Camille looked at them.

Then at Adrian.

“Why do they listen to you?””

One guard answered before Adrian could.

“Because the access system recognizes his credentials.””

Camille turned toward Monica.

“Did you know?””

Monica shook her head.

“No.””

“Then nobody knows anything.””

Adrian opened the steel door.

Cold air spilled into the showroom.

Beyond it was a small private office hidden inside the store's structure.

A desk.

A safe.

A single leather chair.

And on the desk sat an old black telephone.

The phone rang again.

Camille whispered, “That's it.””

Victor stepped inside.

Adrian followed.

Camille came behind them.

Monica stayed at the doorway with the guards.

Victor stared at the telephone.

“No.””

Adrian picked it up.

“Hello?””

Static.

Then a woman's voice.

Soft.

Older.

But unmistakably female.

“Is Victor there?””

Victor stopped breathing.

Camille's hand flew to her mouth.

“Mom?””

The voice went silent.

Adrian looked at Victor.

“She's asking for you.””

Victor backed away.

“No.””

Camille grabbed his sleeve.

“Dad.””

“No.””

“That's her voice.””

“Camille, listen to me.””

“No!””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You told me she died.””

“She did.””

“Then why is she calling?””

Victor couldn't answer.

The woman's voice returned through the receiver.

“Camille?””

Camille froze.

Adrian held the phone toward her.

She took it with trembling fingers.

“Mom?””

A long pause.

Then:

“My baby.””

Camille broke.

She pressed one hand against her mouth.

“Where are you?””

“I can't tell you.””

“Why?””

“Because your father is listening.””

Camille looked at Victor.

He shook his head frantically.

The voice continued.

“Camille, you must not sign anything.””

“What?””

“Not the acquisition. Not the transfer. Nothing.””

Camille stared at the contract folder.

“Why?””

“Because the company isn't what your father told you.””

Victor stepped forward.

“Enough.””

The phone went silent.

Camille pulled it closer.

“Mom?””

Nothing.

“Mom!””

The call ended.

Camille slowly lowered the receiver.

Victor looked devastated.

She turned toward him.

“You knew.””

He didn't answer.

“You knew she was alive.””

“I knew she left.””

“That's not what I asked.””

Victor swallowed.

“I knew she survived.””

Camille stared at him.

“Why did you tell me she died?””

“Because I had to.””

“No.””

Victor shook his head.

“You don't understand what happened.””

“Then explain it.””

He looked at Adrian.

Adrian said nothing.

Victor finally sat in the leather chair.

“Your mother discovered the original agreement.””

Camille crossed her arms.

“What agreement?””

“The one your grandfather made before the company became wealthy.””

Victor looked down.

“Your grandfather didn't build the company alone.””

Camille frowned.

“Who helped him?””

Victor's eyes moved toward Adrian.

Adrian answered.

“My father.””

Camille looked confused.

“Your father?””

“Yes.””

“My grandfather partnered with your father?””

“No.””

Adrian's jaw tightened.

“He stole from him.””

Victor closed his eyes.

Camille stared.

“How?””

Adrian opened the safe beneath the desk.

Inside was a thin envelope.

He pulled it out.

The paper was yellowed with age.

Camille reached for it.

Adrian stopped her.

“Careful.””

She opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

Three young people stood in front of a much smaller company building.

Her grandfather.

A young Victor.

And a Black man Camille had never seen before.

She looked at Adrian.

“Is that your father?””

“Yes.””

“Why was he with my grandfather?””

“Because they were partners.””

Victor whispered, “They were supposed to be.””

Camille looked at him.

“What happened?””

Victor's voice cracked.

“My father took the money.””

Adrian stared at him.

“Your grandfather did.””

Victor shook his head.

“He made me sign the papers.””

“And your mother found them.””

Victor said nothing.

Camille looked down at the photograph again.

“Why would my mother sign anything after that?””

“She didn't,” Adrian said.

Camille looked up.

Adrian turned the photograph over.

There was handwriting on the back.

One sentence.

*If they come for my daughter, give her the truth.*

Camille's breath caught.

“Who wrote that?””

Adrian looked at the handwriting.

“Your mother.””

Victor stood abruptly.

“Give me that.””

Adrian pulled it away.

Victor's expression changed.

“You don't know what you're holding.””

“I know exactly what it is.””

“No.””

Victor pointed at the envelope.

“You don't know what else she left.””

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

“What else?””

Victor went silent.

Camille stepped toward him.

“You said she left something else.””

“I said nothing.””

“You just did.””

Adrian opened the envelope again.

A second sheet slid out.

This one carried a date.

Twenty-three years ago.

And beneath the date was a sentence that made Victor's face collapse.

*Adrian Cole is not the investor.*

Camille stared.

“Then who is he?””

Adrian read the next line.

His eyes hardened.

Before he could speak, the hidden office door slammed shut behind them.

The lights went red.
