He Was Still Down There / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1: The Silver Key

“Serve the table. Now.””

Victoria’s voice cut through the soft piano music like a knife.

Elena froze beside the candlelit dining table, the silver serving tray trembling in her hands.

Victoria grabbed Elena’s wrist and jerked it toward her. The tray slammed against Elena’s chest, making the crystal glasses rattle violently.

One glass tipped.

Elena caught it just before it fell.

“I—I’m sorry,” Elena whispered.

Victoria tightened her grip.

“Did I ask for an apology?””

Around them, the engagement dinner continued in stunned silence. A dozen guests sat beneath enormous crystal chandeliers, dressed in black tie and evening gowns. White roses filled tall glass vases. Silverware gleamed against dark mahogany.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Except Luca.

He had been standing near the fireplace, speaking quietly with one of his business partners.

Now he was staring at Elena.

More specifically, at her face.

Her left eye was swollen and bruised beneath a thin layer of makeup.

Luca’s expression changed.

The warmth disappeared from his eyes.

“Elena.””

She looked at him.

“Yes, sir?””

“What happened to your eye?””

Victoria released Elena’s wrist.

“She fell.””

Luca didn’t look at Victoria.

“Is that what happened?””

Elena lowered her eyes.

“Yes.””

The answer came too quickly.

Luca watched her for another second.

Then Victoria smiled.

“It’s been a long night, Luca. She’s clumsy. You know how staff can be.””

Elena swallowed.

Luca said nothing.

Victoria turned sharply toward her.

“You heard me. Serve the table.””

Elena nodded and began walking.

Her black shoes clicked softly across the polished floor.

She kept her head down.

She kept the tray level.

But tears blurred her vision.

She reached the doorway leading toward the dining room corridor.

“Wait.””

Luca’s voice.

Elena stopped.

He walked toward her.

Victoria’s smile vanished.

Luca stepped directly into Elena’s path.

“Elena,” he said quietly, “give me your hand.””

She hesitated.

“Sir…”

“Your hand.””

Slowly, she extended it.

Luca gently turned her wrist over.

Fresh red finger marks circled her skin.

His jaw tightened.

“Who did this to you?””

Elena’s breathing became shallow.

Her eyes moved past him.

Toward Victoria.

Luca followed her gaze.

Victoria stood perfectly still beside the table.

Her diamond necklace glittered beneath the chandelier.

Then she laughed softly.

“She fell.””

Luca looked back at Elena.

“Who did this?””

Elena’s lips parted.

No words came.

Victoria stepped closer.

“Luca, you're making a scene.””

He ignored her.

“Elena.””

“She—”

Victoria suddenly moved between them.

“She fell,” Victoria repeated, louder this time.

“Stop embarrassing me in front of my guests.””

Luca looked down at Elena’s wrist again.

Then something caught his eye.

A jeweled bracelet.

Victoria’s bracelet.

The tiny gold settings matched the shape of the bruises around Elena’s skin almost perfectly.

Luca slowly raised his eyes.

“Where did you get that bracelet?””

Victoria instinctively covered her wrist.

“What?””

“The bracelet.””

Victoria’s fingers tightened around it.

“You gave it to me.””

“No.””

His voice was calm.

That made it worse.

“I bought you the necklace.””

Victoria’s face flickered.

Luca stepped closer.

“I don't remember buying that.””

Victoria glanced toward the guests.

“Luca, please.””

He didn't move.

“Take it off.””

Her eyes widened.

“Why?””

“Take it off.””

The room had become completely silent.

Victoria slowly removed the bracelet.

Elena stared at the floor.

Luca looked from the bracelet to the marks on Elena’s wrist.

Then he noticed something else.

A tiny silver key was tucked beneath the edge of Elena’s apron.

Elena saw him looking.

Her hand immediately covered it.

Luca lowered his voice.

“What is that?””

Elena’s eyes filled with fresh tears.

“Nothing.””

“Show me.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“Elena.””

The warning in her voice made Elena flinch.

Luca noticed.

His face hardened.

“Give me the key.””

Elena looked at Victoria.

Then at Luca.

Finally, with shaking fingers, she pulled the key from beneath her apron.

It was small.

Old.

Silver.

And engraved with the crest of Luca’s family.

Luca stared at it.

“Where did you get this?””

Elena whispered, “She dropped it.””

Victoria went pale.

Luca looked at her.

“Who dropped it?””

Elena’s voice barely carried across the room.

“Victoria.””

A chair scraped against the floor.

One of the guests stood.

Victoria shook her head.

“No.””

Elena continued.

“After she locked me downstairs.””

Luca’s fingers closed around the key.

His eyes never left Victoria.

“That opens my father’s private room.””

Victoria took one step backward.

Then another.

A deep, heavy *BANG* suddenly shook the mansion.

The chandelier trembled.

Crystal glasses rattled.

Every guest went silent.

Elena looked directly at Luca.

“He’s still down there.””

Luca slowly turned toward Victoria.

Victoria backed toward the hallway.

Her face had gone completely white.

And in Luca’s hand, the silver key trembled once.

May you like

Not from fear.

From the realization that whatever was behind that locked door had been waiting for him.
