He Was Still Down There / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5: The Man Behind the Wall

Luca descended the hidden staircase.

Each step groaned beneath his weight.

The light below flickered through a narrow doorway.

He reached it and stopped.

The room beyond was small.

Concrete walls.

A single metal chair.

An old table.

Stacks of boxes.

And photographs.

Dozens of them.

Luca stepped inside.

Elena followed him despite his earlier warning.

Victoria remained halfway down the stairs.

Luca picked up the nearest photograph.

It showed him as a child.

Eight years old.

Standing beside his father outside the mansion.

Another showed Adrian at seventeen.

Another showed Luca leaving college.

Then one showed Victoria arriving at the mansion for the first time.

Luca turned toward her.

“You've been watching me.””

Victoria shook her head.

“No.””

“Then who took these?””

She didn't answer.

Luca lifted another photograph.

This one was recent.

It showed Elena carrying laundry through the basement.

A red circle had been drawn around her face.

Luca looked at Elena.

“Who took this?””

“I don't know.””

A soft click sounded behind them.

The hidden door closed.

Victoria screamed.

“Luca!””

He turned.

The door had locked itself.

Then the older man's voice came through a speaker mounted high on the wall.

“You were always too curious.””

Luca stared at it.

“Who are you?””

A low laugh answered.

“You know.””

“No.””

“You've spent fifteen years pretending you don't.””

Luca stepped closer.

“Show yourself.””

“Not yet.””

Elena whispered, “That's him.””

Luca looked at her.

“Who?””

“My father used to work here.””

The voice interrupted.

“Your father?””

Elena flinched.

“Yes.””

The voice laughed again.

“Interesting.””

Luca turned sharply.

“You know her?””

“Of course.””

Elena backed against the wall.

The speaker crackled.

“Her father was one of the few men who understood what your family really was.””

Luca's eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

Victoria spoke from behind the door.

“Don't listen to him.””

Luca spun around.

“How long have you known about this room?””

Victoria pressed her palms against the wood.

“Since I was twenty-three.””

“And Adrian?””

“I met him afterward.””

“Where?””

“In Chicago.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because your father threatened him.””

The speaker went silent.

Luca stared at Victoria.

“Threatened him with what?””

“My life.””

A beat of silence.

Then the voice returned.

“She always makes herself sound innocent.””

Victoria screamed.

“Shut up!””

Luca looked at her.

“Why would my father threaten Adrian?””

Victoria shook her head.

“Because Adrian found the accounts.””

“What accounts?””

“The family accounts.””

Luca felt something shift inside him.

His family had built a fortune over three generations.

Real estate.

Private equity.

Hotels.

Construction.

His father had always called it clean money.

But Victoria's expression told him otherwise.

“What did Adrian find?””

“Payments.””

“To whom?””

“Politicians. Judges. Police officers.””

Luca's face tightened.

“That's impossible.””

Victoria laughed bitterly.

“That's what Adrian said.””

The speaker crackled.

“He was wrong.””

Luca turned toward it.

“Then tell me the truth.””

The older voice became colder.

“Your father didn't build the family empire.””

Luca stared.

“He inherited it.””

“And?””

“He built something beneath it.””

Elena whispered, “What?””

The voice answered.

“A system.””

The lights flickered.

Luca looked at the photographs again.

Every major event in his adult life appeared to have been documented.

His first business deal.

His first failed relationship.

His engagement to Victoria.

His father's funeral.

Everything.

Someone had been watching him for years.

Then Luca noticed a photograph lying beneath the others.

He picked it up.

It showed Victoria standing beside Adrian.

But Adrian wasn't the only person in the frame.

Behind them stood an older man.

Luca stared at him.

His father.

Alive.

The photograph was dated three months after his funeral.

Luca's fingers went numb.

“Where was this taken?””

Victoria closed her eyes.

“I don't know.””

“Victoria.””

“I don't know.””

“You're lying.””

“I swear.””

Luca flipped the photograph over.

There was writing on the back.

*HE NEVER LEFT THE HOUSE.*

Luca looked toward the floor.

The mansion suddenly felt different.

Every wall.

Every hallway.

Every locked room.

He whispered, “He's been here.””

Victoria's silence was answer enough.

A violent bang struck the hidden door.

Then another.

Elena jumped.

“Someone is coming.””

Luca looked at the door.

The speaker went dead.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then the lock released.

The door slowly opened.

Victoria stumbled into the room.

Behind her stood no one.

Luca stared at the empty staircase.

“Where is he?””

Victoria looked at him.

“Gone.””

“How?””

“I don't know.””

Luca's eyes narrowed.

Then Elena pointed at the floor.

A trail of fresh dirt crossed the concrete.

It led away from the hidden room.

Toward another wall.

Luca followed it.

There was a small rectangular panel near the baseboard.

He crouched.

The silver family crest had been carved into it.

He touched the crest.

The panel clicked open.

Inside was a small black box.

Luca pulled it out.

On the lid was a handwritten name.

His own.

*LUCA VALE.*

He opened it.

Inside was a single envelope.

And beneath the envelope sat a second silver key.

Victoria whispered, “No.””

Luca looked at her.

“What?””

Her face had gone completely white.

“That key…”

“What about it?””

She took one step backward.

“That one belonged to Adrian.””

Before Luca could respond, his phone began ringing.
