Chapter 10: The Family He Chose
Luca looked past the security men and found the only thing in the hallway that still felt familiar.
Elena.
She stood near the study doorway, one hand pressed against the wall, her bruised eye swollen beneath the dim light.
She was terrified.
But she hadn't run.
Luca looked at Adrian.
Then Victoria.
Then Everett.
“Who is my real family?””
Everett smiled.
“You'll find out downstairs.””
“No.””
Luca stepped forward.
“I've spent my entire life letting other people decide what I should believe.””
His eyes settled on his father.
“I'm done.””
Everett's smile disappeared.
Two guards moved toward Luca.
Adrian lunged.
The hallway erupted into chaos.
A guard grabbed Adrian's shoulder, but Adrian drove him into the wall. Another reached for Luca. Luca caught the man's wrist and shoved him away.
Victoria screamed.
“Luca!””
Everett stepped backward.
“Stop.””
Nobody listened.
Luca pushed through the confusion and grabbed the silver key from his pocket.
He suddenly understood.
The first key.
The second key.
The family crest.
His father's private room.
The hidden surveillance chamber.
None of the doors had ever been meant to keep someone out.
They were designed to keep someone *in*.
Luca ran toward the staircase.
Adrian followed.
“Where are you going?””
“The final door.””
They raced downstairs.
Elena followed them.
Victoria came last.
Everett remained above.
“Luca!”” he shouted.
“If you open that door, you'll destroy everything!””
Luca stopped.
He turned.
“You've been saying that my whole life.””
Then he continued.
At the bottom of the hidden staircase, the corridor seemed different.
A section of stone wall had opened.
Behind it was a narrow passage leading beneath the mansion.
Adrian stared.
“I never found this.””
Elena stepped closer.
“I did.””
Luca looked at her.
“When?””
“The night she locked me downstairs.””
Victoria lowered her head.
Elena pointed ahead.
“There was a door.””
They reached it.
It was enormous.
Black iron.
No handle.
No keyhole.
Only the Vale family crest carved into the center.
Luca pressed his palm against it.
Nothing happened.
Adrian whispered, “Try the key.””
Luca held up the first silver key.
Nothing.
He tried the second.
Nothing.
Then he remembered his mother's words.
*Only you can open it.*
Luca placed both keys against the crest.
The metal began to glow faintly.
A hidden mechanism clicked.
The door opened.
Inside was a room unlike anything beneath the mansion.
It wasn't a cell.
It wasn't a vault.
It was a bedroom.
Warm.
Clean.
Flowers stood in a vase beside the window.
Books filled the shelves.
And sitting on the edge of the bed was his mother.
Luca stopped.
She looked older than the woman in the photograph.
Older than the woman in the recording.
But he knew her instantly.
His mother stood.
Neither moved.
Then she whispered:
“Luca.””
He crossed the room.
She reached for him.
He fell into her arms.
For a few seconds, the mansion, the secrets, the money, and the lies disappeared.
There was only a mother holding the son she had lost.
“I thought you were dead,” Luca whispered.
“I know.””
“I mourned you.””
“I know.””
“Why didn't you come back?””
She pulled away.
“Because your father told me he'd kill you.””
Luca looked at her.
“He said you were dangerous.””
She gave a sad smile.
“He needed you to believe that.””
Adrian entered the room.
Their mother looked at him.
“My boys.””
Adrian's eyes filled with tears.
Luca turned toward him.
“You knew she was alive?””
“I suspected.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because every time I got close, Dad found me.””
Their mother shook her head.
“Your brother tried to rescue me.””
Adrian looked down.
“He almost died doing it.””
Luca stared at his brother.
“And Victoria?””
His mother looked toward the doorway.
Victoria stood there, crying.
“She helped me survive.””
Luca frowned.
Victoria stepped forward.
“I was ordered to spy on you.””
She wiped her cheeks.
“But after I found your mother, I couldn't betray her.””
Luca remembered every lie.
Every secret.
Every cruel moment.
Then he looked at Elena.
“And she?””
His mother walked toward Elena.
Her eyes softened.
“Her father saved my life.””
Elena's lips trembled.
“My father?””
“He discovered the hidden accounts. He helped Adrian get evidence. When your father found out, he was killed.””
Elena covered her mouth.
Luca looked toward the doorway.
Everett stood there.
Alone.
The security men were gone.
He looked strangely tired.
Almost old.
“You've ruined everything,” Everett said.
Luca stepped between him and his mother.
“No.””
Everett's eyes narrowed.
“You don't understand what this family needs.””
“I understand exactly what it needs.””
Luca held up the black box.
“An ending.””
Everett laughed.
“You think those documents will destroy me?””
“No.””
Luca pulled out his phone.
“I think they will destroy you.””
Everett's expression changed.
Luca had sent every file from the study to the police.
Every account.
Every name.
Every photograph.
Every recording.
Adrian stared at him.
“You sent everything?””
“Everything.””
Victoria whispered, “He'll go to prison.””
Everett's face hardened.
“You'd betray your own father?””
Luca looked at him.
“You stopped being my father a long time ago.””
Sirens sounded outside.
Blue and red light flashed through the mansion windows.
Everett looked toward the stairs.
Then back at Luca.
“You'll regret this.””
Luca shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at his mother.
At Adrian.
At Elena.
Then, finally, at Victoria.
“I regret believing you.””
Everett was taken away without another word.
The mansion became silent.
Hours later, dawn began creeping over Manhattan.
The engagement dinner table was still covered with untouched food.
The candles had burned almost completely down.
Luca stood beside the long windows as police cars disappeared into the street below.
Elena approached.
Her wrist was wrapped in a clean bandage.
“You should get that eye checked,” Luca said.
She smiled faintly.
“I will.””
He looked at her.
“I'm sorry.””
“For what?””
“For not seeing it sooner.””
Elena shook her head.
“You see it now.””
Victoria appeared behind them.
She had removed the diamond necklace.
She placed it on the table.
“I don't expect forgiveness,” she said.
Luca looked at her.
“You shouldn't.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
Then she walked toward the front door.
Luca didn't stop her.
Adrian joined him at the window.
Their mother sat nearby, holding an old family photograph.
For the first time in fifteen years, the three of them were together.
But Luca kept thinking about the sentence on the envelope.
*The person you trust most is the one who opened the basement door.*
He had assumed it meant Victoria.
He had been wrong.
His mother looked up.
“You're wondering about the final message.””
Luca turned.
“What message?””
She held up the photograph.
On the back was another handwritten sentence.
One Luca had never seen.
*I didn't hide because your father was afraid you'd find me.*
Luca stared.
His mother continued softly.
“I hid because I was afraid of what would happen when you learned the truth.””
“What truth?””
She looked at Adrian.
He nodded.
Then she looked back at Luca.
“Your father wasn't the one who started the family business.””
Luca frowned.
“Who was?””
His mother slowly turned the photograph over.
Behind her stood Elena.
She was holding the silver serving tray.
Something caught the morning light beneath it.
A second engraved crest.
Different from the Vale crest.
Luca stared.
Elena noticed.
“What?””
He walked toward her.
“Where did you get that tray?””
Elena looked down.
“I don't know. It was already here when I started working.””
His mother stood abruptly.
Her face went pale.
“No.””
Luca turned.
“What?””
She stared at the tray.
“That belonged to my father.””
Luca looked at Elena.
Elena's eyes widened.
“You mean…”
His mother nodded.
Then she looked directly at Luca.
“Your grandfather didn't build this empire.””
She pointed toward Elena.
“He stole it from hers.””
The room fell silent.
Luca stared at the maid who had nearly been thrown out of the mansion hours earlier.
Elena looked just as stunned.
His mother whispered:
May you like
“She is the last surviving heir.””
And suddenly, the entire mansion belonged to someone else.
