Chapter 14: The Recording That Changed Everything

Evelyn Hayes arrived at the police station twenty minutes later.

Vanessa stood in the interview room beside Margaret.

Daniel had been called and was waiting outside with an investigator.

Brielle sat quietly in the corner.

Nobody knew what to expect.

When the door opened, Vanessa saw the woman from the photograph.

Her grandmother.

Older than she remembered.

Thinner.

But unmistakably Evelyn.

For several seconds, Vanessa couldn't move.

Evelyn stopped at the doorway.

“Vanessa?””

The girl's name came out as a whisper.

Vanessa stared at her.

“You're alive.””

Evelyn's eyes filled.

“Yes, sweetheart.””

“You let us bury you.””

Evelyn lowered her head.

“I know.””

“My father cried at your funeral.””

“I know.””

“I thought you were dead!””

Evelyn began crying.

“I am so sorry.””

Vanessa stepped backward.

“Don't.””

Evelyn stopped.

Vanessa's voice trembled.

“Don't call me sweetheart like nothing happened.””

The older woman nodded.

“You have every right to hate me.””

“I don't even know who you are.””

Evelyn sat down slowly.

Margaret placed the cassette recorder on the table.

“We need to discuss the documents found in the storage locker.””

Evelyn looked at the device.

“Did you find the original tape?””

“Yes.””

“Then you have everything.””

Margaret studied her.

“Not everything. We need your explanation.””

Evelyn took a long breath.

“Jonathan and I created Northbridge Consulting. The company was supposed to manage investments for several charitable organizations.””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“But you stole money.””

Evelyn nodded.

“I allowed money to be diverted through false invoices. At first, I told myself it was temporary. Jonathan promised to return everything.””

“And Tiana?””

Evelyn looked down.

“Tiana was involved from the beginning. She had access to the foundation's administrative records.””

Brielle stood.

“My mother?””

Evelyn nodded.

“She knew about the missing money.””

Brielle covered her mouth.

“But why?””

“Because she believed Jonathan would make her wealthy.””

Vanessa felt sick.

“And Olivia?””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“That was the worst thing they did.””

Brielle stepped closer.

“What happened to my sister?””

Evelyn looked at her.

“Olivia was not simply a victim of an unfortunate illness. The money your mother believed had been spent on her treatment was diverted into the company.””

Brielle shook her head.

“No.””

“Your mother told everyone she had paid for private treatment. But some of those invoices were false. She used Olivia's medical expenses as a way to justify withdrawals.””

Brielle began crying.

“Are you saying my sister could have received better treatment?””

Evelyn's voice broke.

“I don't know. But the money was supposed to help her.””

Brielle sank into her chair.

Vanessa looked at Evelyn.

“And Mom found out?””

“Yes.””

“What did she do?””

“She confronted Jonathan. She threatened to report everyone involved.””

Evelyn leaned forward.

“I tried to convince her to stay quiet. I told her the money could be replaced. I told her nobody needed to lose their family.””

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

“But Mom refused.””

“She did.””

Evelyn looked at the recorder.

“Jonathan became desperate. He believed your mother had copies of every transaction. He was afraid she would expose him and send him to prison.””

Margaret interrupted.

“Did Jonathan arrange the accident?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“Not directly.””

Vanessa frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“Tiana wanted your mother gone. She believed your mother was going to expose the financial fraud and destroy her chance of marrying Daniel.””

Brielle stared at her.

“My mother wanted Vanessa's mother dead?””

Evelyn didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

Margaret pressed the recorder's button.

A man's voice filled the room.

Jonathan Pierce.

The documents need to disappear. Margaret is asking too many questions.

Then Tiana's voice.

What if she refuses?

Jonathan replied.

Then we make sure she can't present them.

A pause followed.

Then Tiana spoke again.

Daniel will take the blame if anything happens. He already signed the company paperwork.

Vanessa felt her chest tighten.

The recording continued.

Jonathan's voice became clearer.

I have a mechanic who can make the car look unsafe after the fact. But I am not touching the vehicle myself.

Tiana laughed softly.

You don't have to. Thomas will handle it.

The recording stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa stared at Evelyn.

“Did they kill my mother?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“I don't know whether they intended to cause the crash or simply create evidence that could be used against Daniel. But I know they arranged for the vehicle to be tampered with.””

Margaret immediately turned toward the investigator.

“This is significant evidence.””

The investigator nodded.

“We'll have the recording authenticated.””

Vanessa looked at her grandmother.

“Why did you disappear?””

“Because Jonathan discovered I had copied the financial records. He threatened me. He said if I went to the police, he would make sure Daniel was arrested for fraud.””

“And you believed him?””

“I was afraid.””

“You left your son and granddaughter to deal with everything alone.””

Evelyn began crying.

“I know.””

Vanessa turned away.

There was too much betrayal.

Her grandmother had helped create the fraud.

Her stepmother had helped hide it.

Jonathan had threatened her mother.

And her father had spent seven years hiding his involvement in the accident.

Nobody in her family had told her the truth.

The door opened.

Daniel entered with the investigator.

He stopped when he saw Evelyn.

For a long moment, mother and son stared at each other.

Then Daniel whispered, “You were alive.””

Evelyn stood.

“Daniel…”

“You let me bury you.””

“I had to disappear.””

“You let me believe I had lost you!””

“I was trying to protect you.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Evelyn looked down.

Then she approached him.

“I know I don't deserve forgiveness.””

Daniel stepped away.

“Not today.””

Evelyn nodded.

“I understand.””

The investigator placed a document on the table.

“We have a warrant to retrieve additional financial records and interview Mr. Pierce and Mrs. Hayes. Based on the recording and the documents recovered, both will face further questioning.””

Vanessa looked at the officer.

“What about my mother's accident?””

“The case will be reopened. We'll examine the vehicle inspection records, the financial transactions, and Thomas Reed's testimony.””

Daniel sat beside Vanessa.

He didn't touch her.

He simply waited.

After a moment, Vanessa asked the question that had haunted her since the beginning.

“Was Mom alive when you left the garage that night?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Yes.””

“Did she know someone might hurt her?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn't you stay?””

He began crying.

“Because I thought I could fix everything the next morning.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“And the next morning never came.””

Daniel nodded.

“No.””

For several minutes, Vanessa said nothing.

Then she stood.

“I need to go.””

Margaret followed her into the hallway.

“Where are you going?””

“The competition.””

Margaret looked surprised.

“Vanessa, the final results have already been announced.””

Vanessa stopped.

“What?””

“The committee has been waiting for you. They want to speak with you before the awards ceremony.””

Her phone vibrated.

A message from Mrs. Collins appeared.

Vanessa, you need to come back. Something wonderful has happened.

Vanessa looked at the screen.

“What is it?””

Margaret smiled faintly.

“You might want to hear it from your teacher.””

They arrived at the auditorium just before the awards ceremony.

The audience was still seated.

Mr. Harrison stood at the podium.

When he saw Vanessa enter, he smiled.

“Ladies and gentlemen, before we announce the final results, we need to recognize a remarkable young musician.””

The lights shifted toward Vanessa.

Mr. Harrison continued.

“Today, Vanessa Hayes experienced circumstances that would have caused many performers to withdraw. Instead, she chose to continue.””

The audience applauded.

“Her performance received the highest technical score of the afternoon. But more importantly, the judges unanimously agreed that her interpretation demonstrated extraordinary emotional depth.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Mr. Harrison lifted an envelope.

“The Westbridge Conservatory scholarship is awarded to…”

He paused.

“Vanessa Hayes.””

The auditorium erupted.

Mrs. Collins rushed toward her.

Vanessa began crying as her teacher wrapped her in a hug.

Daniel stood near the back.

He was clapping.

But Vanessa didn't run toward him.

She looked at the empty chair where her mother should have been.

Then she whispered:

“I did it, Mom.””

For the first time that day, she felt something other than fear.

She felt hope.

But as she walked toward the stage to receive her award, her phone vibrated again.

An unknown number.

One final message.

The people who arranged your mother's accident have been found. But the person who actually caused the crash is still hiding.

Vanessa stopped.

She looked toward the auditorium doors.

A man stood there.

May you like

Thomas Reed.

And he was holding a photograph of the car after the accident.
