Chapter 5: The Photograph Nobody Was Supposed to See

Vanessa stared at the photograph until the stage manager called her name a second time.

“Miss Hayes? You're next.””

She quickly locked her phone.

“I'll be there.””

But her mind was no longer on the competition.

The photograph had been taken before her mother died.

Tiana had been standing beside her mother.

Why?

And who was the little girl?

Vanessa approached Daniel, who was still speaking with Margaret.

“Dad, look at this.””

She showed him the photograph.

His expression changed immediately.

The color drained from his face.

“Where did you get that?””

“Someone sent it to me.””

Daniel enlarged the image.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he whispered, “I can't believe she kept that.””

“Who is the little girl?””

Margaret leaned closer.

Her eyes widened.

“Daniel, is that—”

“Not here,” he interrupted.

Vanessa looked between them.

“Is what?””

Daniel handed back the phone.

“It's complicated.””

“Everything is complicated today. Can someone please tell me the truth?””

Margaret gently placed a hand on Vanessa's shoulder.

“We will explain. But first, you need to decide whether you still want to perform.””

Vanessa looked at the stage.

The audience was waiting.

She could hear a few people whispering.

She could feel the weight of her mother's violin case sitting in the backstage room.

Then she remembered the message.

Your mother knew what kind of woman she was.

Vanessa turned toward her father.

“I want the truth after I finish.””

Daniel nodded.

“I promise.””

This time, Vanessa didn't hug him.

She simply walked onto the stage.

The audience applauded politely.

Some people had already heard about the damaged violin. Others had watched the security footage.

Vanessa could see Tiana sitting near the back of the auditorium now, speaking angrily into her phone.

Brielle was nowhere beside her.

Mr. Harrison approached the microphone.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we appreciate your patience. The competition will now continue. Vanessa Hayes will perform using an approved replacement instrument.””

Vanessa lifted the violin.

She placed it beneath her chin.

For a second, her fingers forgot where to go.

Then she closed her eyes.

She imagined her mother sitting in the front row.

She imagined Daniel beside her.

And she remembered the words her mother had once written on a birthday card.

Never let anyone convince you that your dreams are too much trouble.

Vanessa drew the bow.

The first notes floated into the auditorium.

They were soft.

Almost fragile.

But then the melody grew.

Her fingers moved confidently across the strings.

She wasn't thinking about Tiana.

She wasn't thinking about Brielle.

She wasn't even thinking about the scholarship.

She was thinking about the little girl who had once sat on the living room carpet, listening to her mother hum while preparing dinner.

The music filled the room.

When the final note faded, there was a brief silence.

Then the audience rose.

Applause thundered through the auditorium.

Vanessa lowered the violin.

Her eyes were wet.

Mrs. Collins stood near the curtain, crying openly.

Daniel clapped harder than anyone.

For the first time that afternoon, Vanessa saw him exactly where he had promised to be.

In the front row.

Watching her.

After the performance, Mr. Harrison approached her.

“That was extraordinary, Vanessa.””

“Thank you.””

“Whatever happens with the competition, you should be proud.””

Vanessa nodded.

But before she could return backstage, a woman from the organizing committee approached with a clipboard.

“Miss Hayes, could you come with us for a moment?””

“Why?””

“We need to clarify something regarding your eligibility.””

Vanessa's heart sank.

“Did I do something wrong?””

“No. But there's been a formal complaint.””

The woman glanced toward the back of the auditorium.

“Your stepmother claims you had access to the backstage room before the performance and may have damaged your own instrument to create a situation that would disqualify another contestant.””

Vanessa stared at her.

“She said what?””

The woman looked uncomfortable.

“We're required to investigate all formal allegations.””

Vanessa turned toward Daniel.

He was already approaching.

“That's absurd,” he said.

Margaret stepped beside him.

“We can provide the security footage and the police incident reference once it's available.””

The committee member nodded.

“That would be helpful.””

Vanessa couldn't believe it.

Even after being caught on camera, Tiana was still trying to turn the story around.

Daniel took his daughter aside.

“Don't worry. We'll handle this.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Dad, why does she hate me so much?””

He opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

Margaret watched him carefully.

“Daniel, I think it's time.””

He looked toward the photograph on Vanessa's phone.

Then he nodded slowly.

They moved into a private meeting room.

Daniel shut the door.

Vanessa sat opposite him.

“Tell me.””

He rubbed his hands together.

“The little girl in that photograph is Tiana's first daughter.””

Vanessa frowned.

“But Brielle is her daughter.””

“She is. But Tiana had another child before she married me.””

“Where is she?””

Daniel looked toward Margaret.

“She passed away.””

Vanessa felt a chill.

“How?””

Daniel took a long breath.

“Her name was Olivia. She was younger than Brielle. She died in an accident when she was six.””

Vanessa looked at the photograph again.

The little girl had a bright smile and a ribbon in her hair.

“What does Mom have to do with her?””

Daniel stared at the table.

“Your mother knew Tiana long before I met her.””

Vanessa's eyes widened.

“How?””

“They were involved in a legal dispute.””

Margaret opened a folder.

“Your mother had worked with a charitable organization that supported families facing financial hardship. Tiana had applied for assistance after Olivia became ill.””

Vanessa listened carefully.

“She accused your mother of withholding funds,” Margaret continued.

“But the records showed that the money had been distributed correctly.””

Daniel nodded.

“Your mother helped Tiana's family. She even paid for some of Olivia's medical expenses privately.””

Vanessa looked confused.

“Then why would Tiana hate her?””

“Because Tiana believed your mother had embarrassed her. She thought people were looking down on her.””

Margaret added another document to the table.

“There's more. After Olivia died, Tiana became convinced that your mother had access to additional funds that could have saved her daughter.””

Vanessa stared at the paper.

“But did she?””

“No,” Daniel replied.

“The medical records and financial documents showed otherwise.””

He looked directly at Vanessa.

“Your mother did everything she could.””

Vanessa felt tears building.

“And Tiana blamed her anyway?””

Daniel nodded.

For several moments, nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa asked the question that had been bothering her.

“Did you know about this when you married Tiana?””

Daniel looked away.

“I knew they had a disagreement. I didn't know how serious it had been.””

“Did Mom tell you?””

“She tried.””

Vanessa leaned forward.

“What do you mean?””

Daniel's voice dropped.

“Your mother warned me not to rush into the marriage. She said Tiana had a habit of turning every act of kindness into something she believed she was owed.””

Vanessa felt her throat tighten.

“And you didn't listen?””

Daniel's eyes filled.

“No.””

A knock interrupted them.

Marcus entered, carrying a printed security report.

“Mr. Hayes, we've reviewed the additional footage. There's something you need to see.””

He placed the report on the table.

The second camera had captured Richard Lawson passing Tiana a small envelope.

Inside it was not a cutting tool.

It was a printed document.

A document bearing Daniel's signature.

Vanessa looked at her father.

“Dad?””

Daniel picked it up.

His face turned pale.

“That's the trust authorization form.””

Margaret took the paper.

“Someone prepared a second version.””

She examined the signature.

Then she looked at Daniel.

“This isn't the document we received three weeks ago.””

Vanessa leaned closer.

“What does this one do?””

Margaret read the final paragraph.

Her expression became grim.

“It transfers the educational trust's administrative authority to another person.””

“Who?”” Daniel asked.

Margaret slowly turned the page.

The name was printed clearly.

*Brielle Lawson-Hayes.*

Vanessa stared at it.

Brielle was supposed to receive control of the trust.

But there was something else.

At the bottom of the page was a witness signature.

And Vanessa recognized the handwriting.

It belonged to her father.
