Chapter 6: Her Father's Signature

Daniel stared at the document as if it were a photograph of someone who had died.

“That isn't my signature.””

Margaret carefully examined the page.

“Someone has reproduced it.””

“But how?””

“That's what we need to establish.””

Vanessa looked at her father.

“Did you ever sign anything giving Brielle access to Mom's trust?””

“No.””

“Not even by accident?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I would never transfer something that belonged to you.””

Margaret turned the document toward the light.

“There is something unusual about the ink. The signature appears to have been copied from an older document.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Can you prove that?””

“An independent forensic document examiner can assess it.””

Vanessa sat quietly.

The day had begun with a broken violin.

Now she was discovering that someone had been trying to steal the future her mother had planned for her.

And her father was somehow connected to the paperwork.

“Why would Tiana need the scholarship if she could get the trust?”” Vanessa asked.

Margaret answered carefully.

“Because the scholarship and the trust serve different purposes. The scholarship would provide recognition and potentially additional educational support. The trust could cover expenses beyond tuition.””

“So she wanted both?””

“Possibly.””

Daniel stood and began pacing.

“I need to call my bank. I want every account associated with that trust frozen until this is resolved.””

Margaret nodded.

“I'll contact the trustees immediately.””

Vanessa looked at the document again.

“Why does it say Brielle Lawson-Hayes? She doesn't use that name.””

Daniel stopped pacing.

“That is the name she was registered under before I married Tiana.””

Vanessa frowned.

“Then why use it now?””

Margaret looked at the page.

“Possibly because the original trust records list Brielle's legal identity under her birth surname. Whoever prepared this document may have used information from an older file.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Could Tiana have accessed those files?””

Margaret didn't answer immediately.

Then she said, “She may have had access to documents stored in your home office.””

Vanessa remembered the evening Tiana had entered her father's study while he was away.

She had said she was looking for insurance paperwork.

At the time, Vanessa hadn't questioned it.

Now she wondered what else Tiana had taken.

Daniel called the bank.

He was still on the phone when Margaret received another message.

She read it.

Then she looked up.

“There's a problem.””

Daniel ended his call.

“What now?””

“The trustees have confirmed that someone attempted to withdraw money from the account yesterday.””

Vanessa's heart raced.

“How much?””

“Forty thousand dollars.””

Daniel went rigid.

“Was it successful?””

“No. The transfer was flagged because the authorization details didn't match the verified records.””

Vanessa looked down.

Forty thousand dollars.

Someone had tried to take that money while she was practicing for the competition.

She suddenly remembered Tiana's expensive handbag, Brielle's new clothes, and the recent renovation of their kitchen.

Had the money already been spent?

Daniel sat down.

“I should have seen this.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You couldn't have known everything.””

“I should have protected you.””

She wanted to comfort him.

But another question had been sitting in her mind.

“Dad, why did you marry Tiana?””

Daniel looked surprised.

“What?””

“Mom warned you about her. You said she had tried to tell you something. Why did you marry her anyway?””

He took a long breath.

“After your mother died, I was lost. I didn't know how to raise you alone. I worked constantly, and I thought having another adult in the house would make things easier.””

Vanessa listened.

“Tiana was very attentive at first. She cooked, helped with your schoolwork, and made me believe she wanted to be a family.””

“Did you love her?””

Daniel looked down.

“I thought I did.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“And when she started treating me badly?””

“I kept telling myself it was an adjustment period. That she would become more comfortable. That things would improve.””

“But they didn't.””

“No.””

Daniel's voice broke.

“I was so afraid of losing another family that I didn't notice I was allowing you to lose yours.””

Vanessa looked away.

For years, she had wanted him to notice.

Now that he finally understood, she didn't know what to do with the apology.

Margaret closed the folder.

“We need to focus on the immediate situation. The police will want statements from everyone involved. We should also contact the competition organizers and request that the complaint against Vanessa be withdrawn.””

Daniel nodded.

“Do whatever you need.””

A sudden knock sounded at the door.

Brielle entered.

Her eyes were red, and her hair was disheveled.

“Can I talk to Vanessa?””

Daniel stood.

“Not right now.””

“Please. Just five minutes.””

Vanessa looked at her stepsister.

“Say what you need to say.””

Brielle stepped inside and closed the door.

“I didn't know about the money.””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Okay.””

“I swear. Mom told me she was trying to get me the scholarship. She said she wanted me to have a better future.””

“And you believed her?””

Brielle nodded.

“She said you had everything already. That Dad would always choose you because of your mother's money.””

Vanessa stared at her.

“I don't have everything.””

“I know that now.””

“You knew I practiced every day. You knew I wanted this more than anything.””

Brielle began crying.

“I know.””

Vanessa's voice became sharper.

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

Brielle looked at the floor.

“Because I wanted to win.””

The honesty was almost worse than another excuse.

“You wanted to win so badly that you let her destroy my violin.””

“I didn't think she would go that far.””

“But you knew she was planning something.””

Brielle nodded.

“I thought she would hide it before your performance. I thought you'd miss your turn, and then I'd get another chance.””

Vanessa felt her hands clench.

“You watched me cry on that stage.””

“I was scared.””

“You watched me beg someone to believe me.””

Brielle covered her face.

“I'm sorry.””

Vanessa stood.

“I don't know if I can forgive you.””

Brielle nodded slowly.

“I understand.””

She turned toward the door.

Then she stopped.

“There is something else.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“What?””

Brielle pulled out her phone.

“Mom has been keeping a folder in her bedroom. I saw it last night when she was on the phone with Mr. Lawson.””

“What kind of folder?””

“I don't know. But I saw your name on it.””

Vanessa exchanged a glance with Margaret.

Brielle continued.

“There were copies of your mother's documents. And pictures of your father's signature.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Where is the folder now?””

“In Mom's car.””

“Why are you telling us this?””

Brielle's eyes filled again.

“Because I don't want her to blame me for everything. And because I think Mr. Lawson was helping her with more than the violin.””

Margaret immediately took out her phone.

“Don't touch anything in the car. We need to preserve the evidence.””

Brielle nodded.

Then she looked at Vanessa.

“There's one more thing I heard them say.””

Vanessa waited.

Brielle lowered her voice.

“They weren't just trying to get the trust.””

Daniel frowned.

“What else?””

Brielle swallowed.

“Mom said that if the documents were accepted, she could prove you had agreed to transfer the money before you married her.””

Margaret's expression changed.

“That would be impossible.””

Brielle shook her head.

“That's not all. Mr. Lawson said they needed to make sure Vanessa never found the original agreement.””

Vanessa felt a chill run down her spine.

“Original agreement?””

Margaret opened the folder again.

“What original agreement?””

Brielle looked at Daniel.

“Mom said it was hidden in your house.””

Daniel's face went pale.

He slowly turned toward Margaret.

Then he said something that made Vanessa's blood run cold.

“I know exactly where it is.””

“Where?”” Vanessa asked.

Daniel looked at her.

“In your mother's old music room.””

Vanessa's breath caught.

That room had been locked for years.

Her father had always told her he couldn't bear to enter it after her mother died.

But now, suddenly, the room might contain the most important evidence of all.

Daniel reached for his keys.

“We're going home.””

Margaret stood immediately.

“I'll arrange for an officer to accompany us.””

Vanessa picked up her broken violin case.

She wasn't leaving it behind.

As they walked toward the auditorium exit, her phone vibrated again.

Another message from the unknown number.

This time, there was no photograph.

Only one sentence.

Your father is telling you half the truth, Vanessa. Ask him what happened the night your mother died.

Vanessa stopped walking.

She looked at Daniel.

He had already seen the message over her shoulder.

And for the first time since the competition began, her father looked more frightened than Tiana.

“Dad,” Vanessa whispered.

“What happened that night?””

Daniel didn't answer.

He simply closed his eyes.

Then Margaret spoke quietly.

“Daniel, I think she deserves to know.””

May you like

And Daniel finally said the words Vanessa had never expected to hear.

“Your mother didn't die in the accident everyone told you about.””
