Chapter 5 - ARTHUR DID NOT TRY TO BUY HIS WAY INTO THEIR LIVES

Arthur was wealthy enough to make any gesture suspicious.
So he made none.
No ponies.
No giant gifts.
No trust changes.
He asked to send birthday card.
I said yes after therapist.
Card:
Emma and Ava, I knew your mother when she was young. She was stubborn, funny, and terrible at tennis. I hope someday I can tell you stories if you want. — Arthur
No “Grandpa.”
Good.
Then girls asked.
“Was Mommy bad at tennis?”
Apparently.
Arthur showed old photo later.
Sarah age sixteen missing ball.
They laughed.
Then relationship grew.
Slow.
Monthly lunch.
Always with me/Rachel initially.
Then independently when older.
Arthur did not ask for trust role.
In fact, he signed statement declining any automatic advisory authority over twins’ trust.
Why?
“Because money already damaged enough family.”
Then I asked him:
“Why did Sarah distrust you?”
He did not defend.
“I came and went.”
Work.
Cowardice.
Conflict with her mother.
He paid but did not parent consistently.
When he later wanted closeness, Sarah did not owe it.
He accepted.
That honesty made me trust more.
Then he said:
“She did let me help financially.”
“Why?”
“She said money was the one thing I had always been reliable about.”
Painful.
Then:
“Trust was not apology?”
“No.”
“Legacy?”
“Partly.”
“Control?”
He paused.
“At first, probably.”
There.
Then Sarah forced independent trustee precisely so Arthur could not use gifts as leverage.
Good.
He learned.
Then girls became beneficiaries without needing relationship.
If they never called him Grandpa, trust remained.
Important.
Then Vanessa had misrepresented Arthur as dangerous.
Why?
Because an informed grandfather + independent family office would challenge her access.
Then unknown text sender.
Police traced to Victor Sloan’s assistant phone.
Assistant Mark Ellis.
He sent:
The girls’ real grandfather is asking questions. Do not let him see original birth records.
Why “real grandfather”?
Manipulative framing.
He wanted Vanessa alarmed.
Victor feared Arthur discovering forged request using family-office credentials.
Mark later cooperated.
He said Victor told him:
“Keep Vanessa focused.”
Did Victor order abuse?
No evidence.
He wanted papers.
Vanessa's dragging was her own.
Again important.
Then original birth records.
They showed Sarah legally acknowledged as Arthur's daughter and twins as her descendants.
Victor had tried to claim family-office advisory standing by creating letter with Arthur's company name.
Fraud.
Arthur's questions exposed.
Then regulators.
Victor's scheme broader?
Maybe other family clients billed conflicts.
Audit found ~$3.1m questionable fees across clients over years.
Twins exposure around $480k requested, $170k paid legitimately/partly conflicted before freeze.

Not giant trust theft.
Then criminal/professional consequences later.
