Chapter 6 - VANESSA SAID SHE WANTED A ROLE THAT SARAH WOULD NEVER GIVE HER

In mediated statement months later, Vanessa finally explained.

She resented Sarah.

Not because Sarah harmed her.

Because Sarah had said no.

Years earlier at charity dinner, Vanessa casually suggested she could help organize family events and household structures.

Sarah declined.

Later, when Sarah got sick, Vanessa offered to help with girls.

Sarah allowed some.

But never finances.

Never medical decisions.

Never estate.

Vanessa interpreted distance as judgment.

Then after Sarah died, Vanessa became closer to me.

At first genuine.

She helped with meals.

School pickups.

Grief.

I fell in love partly because she made life manageable.

Then marriage.

She expected management to become authority.

It did not.

Trust still separate.

Girls still talked about Sarah.

Rosa still had influence.

Arthur's legacy existed.

Vanessa felt like permanent guest.

Then Victor told her a formal family-coordinator role could solve.

Paid.

Recognized.

Official.

She wanted it.

Then needed documents.

Then girls interrupted.

Then she dragged Emma.

I asked:

“Was money motive?”

“Part.”

“Control?”

“Yes.”

“Did you love the girls?”

She cried.

“At first.”

Then:

“Later?”

“I loved them when they were easy.”

That sentence.

Children should not earn love through convenience.

Then:

“Did you want them sent away?”

She hesitated.

Victor had discussed short-term grief/behavior program? Let's add carefully.

There was draft for outpatient intensive family therapy, not residential initially.

But one email:

Vanessa: Is there somewhere they could stay a few weeks while Daniel and I reset?

Victor:

Residential placement would require clinical basis. Do not treat it as household convenience.

Good.

Victor not ordering.

Vanessa wanted quiet.

Then:

“Would you have sent them if possible?”

“For a while.”

Without clinical need.

There.

Then girls’ trust could pay? She assumed.

Again incentive.

Then I said:

“They were six.”

“I know.”

Then:

“No, you knew then.”

Silence.

Important.

Then she apologized:

“I made them believe noise was something dangerous.”

Specific.

“I used Sarah’s death to make them feel disloyal for missing her.”

Specific.

“I grabbed Emma because I wanted control of room.”

Specific.

“I searched trust because I wanted a role I was not entitled to.”

Specific.

No “I’m sorry if.”

Then:

“I am sorry to you.”

I answered:

“This is not mainly about me.”

Correct.

Then no contact with girls during case.

Later letters only if therapist approves.

No immediate forgiveness.
