Chapter 11: The Witness Who Kept the Recording
We met Daniel Price at a small roadside diner outside Harrisburg.
Lauren insisted on arranging a private security escort and accompanying us. She also contacted the authorities about the threats Daniel had reported.
I arrived with Emily.
My mother stayed at the hotel under the supervision of a family friend.
I hadn't told her about Vanessa's latest message.
I wanted answers first.
Daniel was sitting in the last booth.
He was in his late sixties, with thinning gray hair and a deep scar running from his left temple toward his cheek.
When he saw us, he immediately stood.
"Michael Harris?""
I nodded.
He looked at me for several seconds.
"You look like David.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"You knew my father?""
"Better than I wanted to.""
Lauren introduced herself.
Daniel didn't sit until she showed him her identification.
Then he opened a battered leather bag.
"I've carried this thing for twenty years.""
He removed a small cassette recorder.
I stared at it.
"What's on there?""
"Thomas.""
"Talking about Margaret?""
Daniel nodded.
"And David.""
Lauren leaned forward.
"Before we listen, I need you to understand that this recording may contain evidence of serious criminal activity. We will preserve it properly and turn it over to the investigators.""
Daniel nodded.
"I don't care what happens to me anymore.""
He pressed PLAY.
A burst of static filled the diner booth.
Then a familiar voice emerged.
Thomas.
The woman is becoming a problem.
Another voice answered.
Richard Cole.
She has documents. If she gives them to David, the entire arrangement collapses.
Thomas spoke again.
Then she won't give them to anyone.
I felt Emily's fingers tighten around my wrist.
The recording continued.
Richard asked, What about the girl?
Thomas answered.
Claire is already taken care of.
Then came a sentence that made my blood run cold.
The mother will be blamed for the fire. Nobody will look any further.
There was a sound of a door closing.
Then Thomas spoke again.
And David?
Richard answered.
He's alive. But he won't be a problem much longer.
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
I stared at the recorder.
"Where did you get this?""
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"I was working for Thomas at the time. I handled his property maintenance and occasionally drove him to meetings.""
"Why were you recording him?""
"Because I suspected he was doing something illegal.""
"Did you know Margaret?""
"Yes. She was a good woman.""
He looked down.
"She trusted me.""
"What happened the night of the fire?""
Daniel took a breath.
"Thomas asked me to drive him to Margaret's house. He said he needed to collect some papers.""
"Was Richard there?""
"Yes.""
"And my mother?""
"I saw her car outside.""
I felt sick.
Daniel continued.
"Thomas told me to wait. Twenty minutes later, he came out carrying a metal box. Richard followed him.""
"What was in the box?""
"Documents. I think.""
"Then what?""
"Thomas told me to drive away. He said there had been an accident.""
I leaned forward.
"Did you see Margaret?""
Daniel shook his head.
"Not that night.""
"Then how do you know she died?""
"I don't.""
I stared at him.
"What?""
Daniel looked directly at me.
"I never saw her body. Nobody I knew ever saw her body. The next morning, Thomas told me Margaret was dead, and the police had identified her.""
Emily looked at Lauren.
"Could she still be alive?""
Lauren answered carefully.
"It's possible. We need to verify the records.""
Daniel opened the leather bag again.
"There is something else.""
He removed a folded document.
It was a payment record.
A large transfer had been made to a private medical facility three days after the fire.
The recipient was listed as:
*MARGARET BENNETT.*
I looked at him.
"Why does it say Bennett?""
"That was her maiden name.""
"How much?""
"Twenty-five thousand dollars.""
"Who paid it?""
Daniel pointed to the bottom.
*THOMAS HARRIS.*
I felt my heart pounding.
"Where was the facility?""
Daniel gave us the name.
It was a rehabilitation center in western Pennsylvania.
Lauren immediately photographed the document.
"I'll have this verified.""
I turned to Daniel.
"Why didn't you go to the police?""
He looked ashamed.
"Thomas threatened my family. He knew where my children went to school. I was a coward.""
"Did you know about my father's disappearance?""
Daniel nodded.
"He told me David had been moved somewhere safe.""
"Where?""
"I don't know. But I heard Thomas discussing a new identity with Richard.""
My phone vibrated.
Vanessa.
I answered.
"Where are you?""
"At the house.""
"Why?""
"Because I need to tell you something before Thomas finds out.""
"Tell me now.""
She hesitated.
"I found a file.""
"What file?""
"One of Thomas's old folders. It contains photographs, bank records, and something about Claire.""
"Where is it?""
"In the study.""
"Don't touch anything.""
"I already did.""
I closed my eyes.
"What did you find?""
Her voice dropped.
"A photograph of Margaret.""
"From the fire?""
"No. From three years ago.""
I stopped breathing.
"Where was she?""
"At a nursing facility.""
I looked at Lauren.
She had heard every word.
"Vanessa, give me the name.""
"I can't.""
"Why?""
"Because Thomas is coming back.""
A crash sounded in the background.
Then Vanessa whispered:
"Michael, he knows I found the folder.""
I heard Thomas shouting.
"Where is it?""
Vanessa screamed.
The call ended.
I immediately stood.
Lauren grabbed my arm.
"Don't go there.""
"My wife is in danger.""
"We'll contact the police.""
I looked at Daniel.
"Do you know where Thomas is?""
Daniel nodded slowly.
"He has a property near the old rehabilitation center.""
"Can you take us there?""
"Yes.""
Lauren shook her head.
"We are not conducting our own investigation. We give the information to law enforcement.""
I understood.
But there was something else.
I looked at the payment record.
Margaret had received money three days after the fire.
That meant she might have survived.
And if Vanessa had seen a photograph of her from three years ago, she could still be alive.
Lauren's phone rang.
She answered, listened, and went completely still.
"What happened?"" I asked.
She slowly lowered the phone.
"The police have located the rehabilitation center.""
"And?""
"They found the original patient records.""
My heart raced.
"Is Margaret listed?""
Lauren nodded.
"Yes.""
"Is she alive?""
Lauren looked at me.
"Michael, according to the records, Margaret Bennett was transferred to another facility eleven months ago.""
"Where?""
Lauren swallowed.
"An assisted-living residence less than twenty miles from your home.""
I stared at her.
All these years, Margaret might have been living near us.
A woman Thomas had declared dead.
A woman whose daughter had been told her father abandoned her.
A woman who could explain everything.
Then Daniel spoke.
"There's one thing you should know.""
We turned toward him.
He pointed at the transfer record.
"The person who signed Margaret out of that facility wasn't Thomas.""
"Who was it?""
Daniel looked at me.
"It was David Harris.""
My father.
May you like
And beneath his signature was another name.
*VANESSA HARRIS.*
