Chapter 12: The Woman Who Had Been Buried Alive

I didn't speak for nearly a minute.

My father had signed Margaret out of a rehabilitation facility eleven months earlier.

Vanessa had signed beside him.

That meant they had been in contact.

Not recently.

Not accidentally.

For almost a year.

"Why would Vanessa help my father?"" Emily asked.

Daniel shook his head.

"I don't know.""

I looked at Lauren.

"Can we visit the facility?""

"The original facility, yes. But the records show Margaret was transferred.""

"Where?""

Lauren checked the document.

"Riverside Haven. It's about twenty minutes from your home.""

I immediately reached for my keys.

Lauren stopped me.

"We're contacting the authorities first.""

I wanted to argue.

But she was right.

Within an hour, officers had verified the transfer records and arranged for us to visit Riverside Haven.

I called my mother.

She answered immediately.

"Michael?""

"Mom, I need you to stay where you are.""

"Why?""

"We found Margaret.""

There was a long silence.

Then she whispered:

"She's alive?""

"Yes.""

My mother began crying.

"Oh, thank God.""

I looked at the paperwork.

"Mom, did you know Dad was helping her?""

"No.""

"Did you know Vanessa was involved?""

"No.""

"Then I need you to tell me something.""

"What?""

"Did you ever see Margaret after the fire?""

My mother hesitated.

Then she said:

"Yes.""

I closed my eyes.

"When?""

"Three days later.""

I felt my stomach drop.

"Where?""

"At the hospital.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Thomas told me she had survived but suffered severe injuries. He said she needed to disappear because people were still looking for her.""

"Who was looking for her?""

"I don't know.""

"Did you speak to her?""

"Only briefly.""

"What did she say?""

My mother started crying again.

"She asked me to find Claire.""

I looked at Emily.

My mother continued.

"She said her daughter was in danger. She begged me to tell David that Claire was alive.""

"Did you?""

"No.""

"Why?""

"Thomas told me he would hurt you if I did.""

I ended the call.

I was shaking.

For twenty-one years, my mother had carried this secret.

But the more I learned, the less certain I was about who had been protecting whom.

At Riverside Haven, a nurse greeted us at the entrance.

"Are you here to see Margaret Bennett?""

I nodded.

She checked a clipboard.

"She's expecting someone, but she hasn't had visitors in quite a while.""

"Who told her we were coming?""

The nurse looked confused.

"She received a telephone call this morning.""

I exchanged a glance with Emily.

"Who called?""

"A man. He said he was her son-in-law.""

My stomach tightened.

"Did he give his name?""

The nurse checked her notes.

"David Harris.""

I felt the room disappear around me.

"Is he here?""

"No. He said he would arrive later.""

Lauren stepped forward.

"We need to see Margaret now.""

The nurse led us down a quiet hallway.

At the end was a small room overlooking a garden.

An elderly woman sat beside the window.

Her hair was silver.

Her hands rested on a knitted blanket.

When she turned toward us, I recognized the eyes from the photograph.

"Margaret?""

She stared at me.

Then her lips began to tremble.

"Michael?""

I stopped.

"How do you know my name?""

She looked toward Emily.

"You're Emily.""

Emily began crying.

Margaret slowly stood.

"Oh, my goodness.""

She reached for us.

"I've waited so long.""

I approached carefully.

"Are you Claire's mother?""

Margaret nodded.

"Yes.""

"Where is she?""

Margaret's expression changed.

For a moment, she looked frightened.

"Is Thomas here?""

"No.""

"Is David?""

I swallowed.

"Not yet.""

She sat down again.

"Then you need to listen.""

I pulled a chair closer.

"Tell me what happened.""

Margaret took a long breath.

"Thomas wanted the estate. He knew Claire was entitled to part of it. He also knew your grandfather had created a separate trust for her.""

"Why did he tell everyone you were dead?""

"Because I had evidence.""

"What evidence?""

"Bank records. Copies of forged signatures. A letter from your father explaining how Thomas had stolen the money.""

I leaned forward.

"Where is it?""

Margaret looked toward the wardrobe.

"Hidden.""

"Where?""

"In the house where I lived before the fire.""

I frowned.

"That house burned down.""

She shook her head.

"Not everything inside it.""

Emily leaned closer.

"What happened the night of the fire?""

Margaret's eyes filled with tears.

"Thomas came to my house with Richard. They wanted the documents. I refused.""

"Then?""

"They locked me in the basement.""

My blood ran cold.

"How did you survive?""

"Daniel helped me.""

I looked at Lauren.

Daniel had never mentioned this.

Margaret continued.

"He had been working for Thomas, but he couldn't watch an innocent woman die. He opened the basement door and helped me escape through the back.""

"Who died in the fire?""

Margaret looked down.

"A woman Thomas had brought there earlier. I never knew her name.""

I felt sick.

"So the authorities identified the wrong body?""

"Thomas arranged it.""

"Why didn't you go to the police?""

"Because Thomas had Claire.""

I froze.

"What?""

Margaret's fingers tightened around the blanket.

"He took my daughter. He told me that if I appeared in public, he would make sure she disappeared.""

"Where was she?""

"At a boarding school. Then a private residence. I never knew exactly.""

Emily covered her mouth.

"Is she still alive?""

Margaret nodded.

"Yes.""

"Where?""

Margaret looked at me.

"Your father knows.""

I stared at her.

"Why did Dad disappear?""

"Because he was trying to get Claire away from Thomas.""

I leaned closer.

"Did he succeed?""

Margaret began crying.

"Yes.""

My heart raced.

"Where is she now?""

Before she could answer, the door opened.

A man stood in the doorway.

Older.

Thinner.

Gray-haired.

Wearing a dark coat.

I knew him immediately.

My father.

David Harris.

For twelve years, I had believed he was dead.

Now he was standing three feet away from me.

He looked at my face.

His eyes filled with tears.

"Michael.""

I stood.

"Don't.""

He stopped.

"I know.""

"You know what?""

"I know you have questions.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Questions? I buried you.""

His face crumpled.

"I never wanted that.""

"You let me believe you were dead for twelve years!""

He looked toward Margaret.

"Thomas was watching everything. I couldn't come back.""

"Then why did you help Vanessa?""

My father looked confused.

"Vanessa?""

I pulled out the transfer record.

"Your signature is here. You and my wife signed Margaret out of the rehabilitation center eleven months ago.""

His expression changed.

Then he looked at Lauren.

"Where did you get that?""

"From the facility records.""

My father closed his eyes.

"Then Thomas has already found out.""

I stepped toward him.

"Tell me where Claire is.""

He looked at Margaret.

Then he looked at me.

"She's safe.""

"Where?""

He swallowed.

"Michael, there's something you need to understand. Claire isn't just your sister.""

I stared at him.

"What does that mean?""

My father slowly removed a photograph from his coat pocket.

It showed a young woman standing beside a little boy.

The woman looked about thirty.

The boy was perhaps six.

My father handed me the photograph.

On the back was a name.

*CLAIRE HARRIS — CURRENTLY MARRIED TO RICHARD COLE.*

I looked up.

"Richard Cole?""

My father nodded.

"Yes.""

The attorney who had helped Vanessa.

The man connected to the forged documents.

The man whose voice was on Daniel's recording.

My father took another breath.

"Claire married him because she believed he was helping her find her mother.""

I stared at the photograph.

Then I noticed something else.

The little boy standing beside Claire had a familiar face.

A face I had seen in photographs of my own childhood.

My father leaned closer.

"Michael, that boy is your nephew.""

"What's his name?""

My father looked toward the hallway.

Then he whispered:

"Daniel.""

I felt my blood run cold.

The same name as the witness.

The same name as the man who had given us the recording.

I turned toward Lauren.

"Is Daniel Price related to Claire?""

She shook her head slowly.

"I don't know.""

My father grabbed my arm.

"Listen to me. Richard Cole isn't just Claire's husband.""

He paused.

Then delivered the revelation that shattered everything.

"He's Thomas's son.""

And before I could respond, Margaret screamed.

A nurse rushed into the room.

Through the open doorway, I saw a man standing at the end of the hallway.

Thomas.

He was holding a photograph.

And he was smiling.

"Family reunion," he said.

"How wonderful.""

Then he raised the photograph for us to see.

It showed Claire standing outside the same nursing home.

The date printed at the bottom was today's.

May you like

Thomas looked directly at me.

"Now, Michael, let's discuss what happens to the last person who knows where your grandfather hid the original will.""
