Chapter 4: The Heiress Nobody Was Supposed to Find
I read Emily's name again.
Then I looked at Lauren.
"You're telling me my grandfather left everything to my sister?""
Lauren nodded.
"Not everything. But the largest portion of his estate, including the investment portfolio and the commercial properties, was placed in a trust for Emily.""
I stared at the document.
The paper was old, but the signatures were clear. My grandfather's name appeared at the bottom, followed by the signatures of two witnesses and a notary.
"Why wasn't Emily told?"" I asked.
Lauren glanced toward Vanessa.
"Because your mother was instructed to keep the trust private until Emily turned thirty.""
Emily was thirty-one.
I looked at the document again.
"That was a year ago.""
"Correct.""
"Then why didn't anyone contact her?""
Lauren hesitated.
"Because the original trustee died, and the replacement trustee was never properly appointed. During that period, someone submitted documents claiming your mother was the sole beneficiary.""
My jaw tightened.
"Who submitted them?""
Lauren didn't answer immediately.
She looked at Vanessa.
My wife descended the staircase, one step at a time.
"This is ridiculous," Vanessa said.
"You can't walk into someone's home and make accusations.""
Lauren closed the envelope.
"I haven't made an accusation. I've presented a legal document.""
Vanessa folded her arms.
"That document is outdated.""
"Your attorney may disagree.""
"Richard Cole already reviewed the estate.""
"Mr. Cole was never authorized to represent the trust.""
Vanessa's expression changed.
I noticed.
So did Lauren.
"Perhaps you should explain why your attorney filed a guardianship petition against Mrs. Harris while simultaneously attempting to transfer assets from a trust he had no authority to administer.""
Vanessa laughed nervously.
"That's not what happened.""
I stepped between them.
"Then tell me what happened.""
Vanessa looked at me.
"Michael, you're allowing a stranger to manipulate you.""
"She brought paperwork. You've brought excuses.""
Her mouth opened, but nothing came out.
Lauren turned toward me.
"I need to speak with Emily. She must see this document herself. There are deadlines we cannot afford to miss.""
I called my sister.
She answered immediately.
"Michael? Is Mom okay?""
"She's fine. Where are you?""
"At the house. Why?""
"Come into the living room. There's someone you need to meet.""
Emily appeared less than two minutes later.
She was still wearing her work clothes, her hair tied into a loose ponytail.
When she saw Lauren, she stopped.
"Who are you?""
Lauren introduced herself and explained the trust.
Emily listened quietly.
Then she looked at the document.
"That's my name.""
"Yes," Lauren said.
"But why?""
"Your grandfather created the trust shortly before his death. He wanted you to receive the assets independently when you reached thirty.""
Emily shook her head.
"I don't understand. Grandpa never told me anything.""
"He asked your mother to protect the arrangement.""
Emily looked toward me.
"Mom knew?""
Lauren nodded.
Emily's face crumpled.
"Why didn't she tell me?""
I didn't have an answer.
Vanessa suddenly interrupted.
"Because the money was never supposed to be yours.""
Everyone turned.
Emily stared at her.
"What?""
Vanessa realized what she'd said.
She tried to recover.
"I mean, the trust was complicated. There were conditions.""
Lauren's voice became firm.
"Which conditions?""
Vanessa looked away.
Emily stepped forward.
"Vanessa, what have you done?""
My wife laughed bitterly.
"Don't act like you're some innocent little girl. You have no idea what your grandfather promised.""
Emily's eyes narrowed.
"What did he promise?""
Vanessa picked up her phone.
"Ask your mother.""
I moved toward her.
"Enough. Where did the $250,000 go?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"I invested it.""
"Where?""
"In a business account.""
"Whose business?""
She hesitated.
"Mine.""
The room went silent.
Emily stared at her.
"You took my inheritance?""
"I didn't take anything.""
"That money belonged to the trust.""
"Your mother authorized the transfer.""
Lauren opened her envelope again.
"Mrs. Harris did not have authority to distribute trust assets without trustee approval.""
Vanessa's face turned red.
"That's your interpretation.""
"No. That's the trust agreement.""
Lauren pulled out another document.
"This is the original account authorization. The signature submitted for Mrs. Harris appears inconsistent with her verified signature on earlier estate records.""
My stomach tightened.
"Are you saying someone forged Mom's signature?""
Lauren looked directly at Vanessa.
"I'm saying it needs to be investigated.""
Vanessa threw her hands up.
"This is insane!""
She turned toward me.
"Michael, you know me. You know I would never steal from your family.""
I looked at her.
"Then why did you transfer $250,000 into your personal business account?""
She said nothing.
Emily began crying.
Not loudly.
Just two tears rolling down her cheeks as she stared at the documents.
I walked over and put my hand on her shoulder.
"We'll figure this out.""
She shook her head.
"Grandpa wanted me to have something, and everyone kept it from me.""
Lauren gently closed the folder.
"There's one more thing you should know.""
I looked at her.
"What?""
"The trust contains a protective clause. If anyone attempts to obtain its assets through fraud, coercion, or unauthorized guardianship, the trustee must immediately freeze distributions and initiate an investigation.""
I glanced at Vanessa.
She was staring at Lauren.
"What happens if that clause is triggered?"" I asked.
Lauren answered calmly.
"The person responsible may lose any claim they have against the estate. Depending on the evidence, there could also be civil and criminal consequences.""
Vanessa suddenly grabbed her handbag.
"I'm leaving.""
I stepped aside.
She marched toward the front door.
Then she stopped and turned around.
"Michael, don't make decisions tonight that you'll regret.""
I looked at her.
"I already regret something.""
"What?""
"Not noticing what you were doing to my mother.""
She walked out.
The door slammed.
Emily sat down heavily.
Lauren remained standing.
"Mr. Harris, there's something else.""
I turned.
"What now?""
She reached into her envelope and produced a second document.
"This was attached to your grandfather's original trust instructions. I believe it explains why your mother kept the inheritance secret.""
I took it.
At the top was my grandfather's handwriting.
To my family, if the truth ever becomes necessary.
I read the first paragraph.
Then the second.
And suddenly I understood why Vanessa had been so desperate to keep my mother inside that garage.
My grandfather had written that Emily's inheritance was only part of the arrangement.
The remainder of the estate was protected by a condition.
A condition involving me.
And beneath it was a sentence that made Lauren look away.
*If Michael Harris discovers the truth about his birth, the trust must be reviewed immediately.*
I looked up.
"My birth?""
Lauren nodded slowly.
"Your grandfather left instructions concerning a secret your mother has kept for more than thirty years.""
Emily looked at me.
"Michael, what does that mean?""
May you like
I couldn't answer.
Because for the first time in my life, I wondered whether the man who raised me had actually been my father.
