Chapter 10 - CLAIRE LOST ACCESS BEFORE SHE LOST THE MARRIAGEClaire did not physically assault Sophie.

Evidence did not show that.

She provided blankets.

Water.

Some food.

But she confined a five-year-old in an unsafe mechanical space and instructed Ethan to keep it secret.

Serious.

A protective order restricted contact during investigation.

Claire moved to her mother’s apartment.

Our marriage separated.

I did not instantly file for divorce during the first seventy-two hours.

Not because I thought we would reconcile.

Because decisions involving Ethan needed stability.

Within two months, I filed.

Claire said:

“I was trying to protect both children.”

I answered:

“You protected your father’s exposure.”

She cried.

“Yes.”

That was closer.

“You thought if you waited, you could fix it.”

“Yes.”

“You made Ethan carry the secret.”

“Yes.”

“You made Sophie live inside a wall.”

Her face broke.

May you like

“Yes.”

No explanation could make that safe.
