Chapter 5 - CLAIRE HAD KNOWN SOPHIE EXISTED FOR THREE MONTHSNot five years.

Three months.

That distinction mattered.

Claire did not know about Mara’s pregnancy when we married.

She did not knowingly steal six years of fatherhood from me.

But she did steal three months.

And eleven days of Sophie’s safety.

Mara first contacted Claire because she feared emailing me directly.

She wrote:

I need Nathan to know Sophie is his daughter. I am sick. Douglas lied to both of us.

Claire read it.

Then deleted it.

Why?

At first, disbelief.

Then fear.

Then she confronted Douglas.

He told her Mara was extorting the family.

Claire wanted proof.

Mara sent:

DNA records from prenatal testing too old to be definitive.

Photos.

Copies of forged emails.

Financial records.

Claire kept waiting.

Then Mara died.

Helen contacted Douglas.

Sophie arrived.

Claire found her at her father’s house.

At that point, silence became indefensible.

She took Sophie.

But not to me.

She hid her.

“Why the wall?”

I asked during our first attorney-supervised meeting.

Claire cried.

“My father came to the house twice.”

“So?”

“He demanded Sophie.”

“You have locks.”

“He has keys.”

“Change them.”

“I wasn’t thinking.”

“No.”

“You were hiding evidence.”

She looked at me.

“Yes.”

There.

“From whom?”

“My father.”

“And me.”

Her eyes closed.

“Yes.”

“Why me?”

“Because once you saw her, everything was over.”

“What was over?”

“My father.”

“Our marriage?”

She said nothing.

That was answer enough.

Claire knew Mara’s truth could expose Douglas.

And expose Claire’s own deletion of Mara’s messages.

She chose delay.

Every day she delayed, Sophie stayed behind a wall.

That was not protection.

It was containment.
