Chapter 6 - THE FIRST CHRISTMAS AFTER VANESSA

Christmas was hard.

Vanessa had decorated everything.

Her stockings.

Recipes.

Traditions.

Lily asked if we should hang her stocking.

Noah said no.

Lily cried.

I did not decide for them immediately.

Therapist suggested:

“What do you want stocking to represent?”

Lily:

“Good Vanessa.”

Noah:

“There isn’t good Vanessa.”

I said:

“There were good memories and bad actions.”

Noah hated.

“I don’t want it.”

So no shared stocking.

Lily kept small ornament from Vanessa in her room.

Noah did not.

Different.

Then William sent gifts.

Too many.

I returned most.

He called upset.

“I’m their grandfather.”

“That does not mean you can buy ten years in one Christmas.”

Silence.

Then:

“You’re right.”

Good.

Next year one book each.

Progress.

Then Vanessa wrote letters.

Court-approved through therapist.

Noah refused.

Lily later read.

I’m sorry I locked you in the closet.

Specific.

I’m sorry I made you afraid of your own home.

Then:

I’m sorry I called fear misbehavior.

Good.

Then:

You do not have to forgive me or call me anything.

Lily cried.

She asked:

“Can I write?”

“Yes.”

She wrote:

I miss pancakes. I don’t miss closet.

Vanessa replied:

That makes sense.

No guilt.

Then Noah at fifteen eventually read his letter.

Vanessa:

You were protecting Lily because adults were not. I called that aggression because it made me feel less wrong.

That hit.

Noah said nothing.

Then:

You should never have needed to be the adult in the room.

He folded.

Did not reply.

But kept.

Then I apologized to Noah separately.

“I let you become Lily’s protector.”

He said:

“You were gone.”

“I know.”

“Are you going to say work?”

“No.”

Good.

Then:

“I chose work patterns. I didn't know abuse, but I ignored warning signs.”

He nodded.

That mattered.

Then I said:

“You are allowed to be her brother, not bodyguard.”

Years.

He slowly let.

Then Lily gained confidence.

No more fear of closet eventually.

We changed closet door—no exterior lock.

She helped pick paint.

Not symbolic overload.

Just practical.

Then she shut door herself one day.

Came out laughing.

Small victory.

Then trust education.

At age twelve Noah attended first.

He learned money.

He said:

“So all that because twenty-six million?”

Samuel:

“Money was one motive. Control another.”

Then Noah:

“Can we just give it away?”

I almost said no reflexively.

Samuel said:

“When adults, you’ll have choices within terms. But you don’t need to destroy your future to make other people less greedy.”

Good.

Noah nodded.

Then:

“I don’t want people knowing.”

Privacy.

Fine.

Then Lily:

“Can I buy horse?”

Again.

May you like

Everyone laughed.

Maybe someday.
