Chapter 8 - THE TRUST DID NOT MAKE THEM SPECIAL

At eighteen, Noah became advisory participant.

Lily thirteen.

He saw full numbers.

Trust had grown to around $31 million.

He said:

“This is too much.”

Samuel:

“It is responsibility, not identity.”

Then Noah asked:

“Did Mom want us to run Mercer businesses?”

“No.”

Emma explicitly:

No beneficiary is required to work for family companies.

Good.

Then Noah wanted study emergency medicine perhaps because rescue? Too neat. Let's choose architecture.

Lily loved animals.

Still horse.

Then they made own lives.

No trust as personality.

Then Vanessa after release requested meeting.

Noah said no.

Lily said yes.

Different.

I respected both.

Lily, fifteen, met Vanessa neutral.

She asked:

“Why did you chase us with cane?”

Vanessa:

“Because I panicked when you escaped.”

“Were you going to hit us?”

“No.”

“Did you want us scared?”

“Yes.”

Honest.

Then:

“Why?”

“So you would go back inside and I could finish.”

“Finish stealing?”

“Finish taking documents.”

There.

Then Lily:

“Did you think I was crazy?”

“No.”

“Then why tell Dad?”

“Because I needed him to believe treatment plan.”

Lily stared.

“That’s worse.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“Do you still love me?”

Vanessa cried.

“Yes.”

Lily:

“I don’t know what to do with that.”

“You don’t have to.”

Good.

No hug first meeting.

Years later maybe.

Then Noah eventually met at twenty.

He was colder.

“Do not call me son.”

Vanessa:

“Okay.”

“Do not apologize by saying overwhelmed.”

“Okay.”

Then:

“Tell me what you did.”

She did.

Locked.

Provoked.

Filed false reports.

Tried control trust.

Threatened with cane.

No excuses.

Then Noah said:

“I forgive you enough not to hate you.”

That was all.

Vanessa accepted.

No relationship maybe cards.

Then William meanwhile got closer.

But Noah told him:

“You are not better because you didn’t tie us.”

William nodded.

Important.

He had manipulated too.

Then he apologized.

“I used Vanessa’s resentment because I wanted authority.”

Yes.

Then:

“I let her carry dirty part while I kept telling myself I was lawful.”

There.

Good.

Then Noah said:

“That is cowardly.”

William:

“Yes.”

Generational truth.

Then William used remaining life to simply show up.

No trust.

No votes.

He attended graduations.

Asked before gifts.

Told stories of Emma.

That was value.

Then one day Lily asked him:

“Why did Mom suspect you alive?”

He said:

“I sent her anonymous book every birthday.”

Same edition her mother used read? Fine.

Emma recognized handwriting in notes.

She knew.

Then:

“Why not sign?”

“Coward.”

He had learned word.

Lily:

May you like

“At least consistent.”

Humor.
