Chapter 7 - VANESSA STOOD IN COURT WITHOUT THE CANE

Vanessa’s case took time.
She eventually pleaded.
Child endangerment/unlawful restraint.
Attempted trust fraud/forgery conspiracy.
Falsification of behavioral records.
Not every count maximum.
She cooperated against unlicensed consultant and James? We don't have James now. William. She cooperated on William's role too.
William accepted separate plea/settlement for financial conspiracy-related, identity/tax/fraud issues from false death and trust scheme.
But because he did not participate in restraint or forgery, sentence different.
A period of custody? Given long-running identity fraud and conspiracy, maybe house arrest/probation/financial penalties. We can say criminal conviction with home confinement/probation, restitution, no fiduciary authority. Meaningful.
Vanessa more direct child abuse + attempted fraud, custodial sentence.
Then at sentencing she said:
“I was overwhelmed.”
Judge:
“Many caregivers are overwhelmed.”
Then:
“I believed I deserved more authority.”
Judge:
“That did not give you authority.”
Then she said:
“I loved the children.”
Judge:
“Love does not legalize restraint.”
Good.
Then William.
He said:
“I convinced myself blood gave me standing I had forfeited through absence.”
There.
Then:
“I wanted to become their grandfather through their trust instead of through time.”
Powerful.
Judge prohibited fiduciary role.
He accepted.
Then I gave statement.
Not revenge.
“When my son ran across driveway carrying his sister, he believed he had to protect her from adult in our home.”
Then:
“That is what I need court to understand.”
Then:
“The financial scheme matters. But the first thing I saw was two children running.”
Yes.
Then trust untouched mostly.
Legal fees for defense? Trust had beneficiary counsel costs, but wrongdoers restitution.
No draining.
Then after court, Noah asked:
“Is it over?”
“Legal part mostly.”
“What about us?”
“No.”
Honest.
Healing longer.
Then I did not turn home into fortress.
We kept security.
But trust came from people.
Julia, my sister.
Samuel.
Therapist.
Teachers trained.
Me.
Then William relationship.
He called once a week eventually.
No financial advice.
He attended soccer game.
Sat back.
No coaching.
Lily gave him drawing.
He framed.
No giant gifts.
Then Noah finally called:
“Grandpa.”
At sixteen, accidentally.
William froze.
Noah rolled eyes.
“Don’t make it weird.”
Good.
Then Emma’s birthday.
We all visited grave.
William too, after children invited.
He said to headstone:
“I’m sorry.”
Noah watched.
Later:
“Do you think Mom heard?”
I said:
“I don’t know.”
No false.
Then Lily:
“I think she knows he’s dumb.”
May you like
We laughed.
Emma would approve.
