Chapter 12: The Will That Was Never Meant to Be Found
I couldn't process what Daniel had just told me.
My father knew Vanessa before she met me.
Not through an investigation.
Not through some professional connection.
He knew her personally.
"Explain," I said.
Daniel looked down the hospital corridor.
"Not here.""
"Then where?""
"Somewhere we can talk without anyone listening.""
I stared at him.
"You've had years to tell me the truth. I'm done waiting.""
He nodded slowly.
"Okay.""
We went into an empty family consultation room.
Daniel closed the door.
Then he sat down.
"Vanessa wasn't a stranger to Dad. She was involved with him before he married Mom.""
I stared at him.
"What?""
"She was young. Dad was older. They had a relationship before he met Mom.""
I shook my head.
"You're telling me Vanessa was Dad's girlfriend?""
Daniel nodded.
"Briefly.""
I sat down.
"Why didn't Mom know?""
"She did. Eventually.""
"Then why did she let me marry her?""
"Because she thought Vanessa had moved on. She believed the relationship had ended years ago.""
I rubbed my forehead.
"This makes no sense.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"There's more.""
I looked at him.
"After Dad married Mom, Vanessa disappeared. Then she married her first husband. When he died, she changed her name and moved away.""
"Why?""
"I don't know. But Dad recognized her when she came back.""
I thought of the photograph in the cabinet.
Our father standing beside Dr. Harris.
Vanessa behind them.
The date.
The note.
Margaret knows more than she admits.
"Why did she come back?""
Daniel swallowed.
"Because Dad had discovered something about her first husband's insurance claim.""
"And she wanted revenge?""
"Maybe. But she also wanted the property.""
I stared at him.
"What property?""
"The old family estate. The land grandfather left behind.""
I remembered the property.
A large piece of land outside town that had been in our family for generations.
It had been valued at several million dollars.
Our father had refused to sell it.
After his death, the ownership had remained in a family trust.
I had forgotten about it.
"Why would Vanessa want it?""
Daniel gave a humorless laugh.
"Because she believed she was entitled to it.""
"On what basis?""
He looked directly at me.
"Because she claimed she was your father's daughter.""
I went completely still.
"What?""
Daniel nodded.
"She told Dad that before he died.""
I felt my stomach turn.
"Is that true?""
"I don't know.""
"How could she be his daughter?""
"She was born before Dad married Mom. There was a possibility.""
I stared at him.
"And nobody told me?""
"Mom was afraid. Dad refused to discuss it.""
I stood and paced across the room.
This was no longer simply a story about a woman who had entered my home and mistreated my daughter.
It was a family history full of secrets.
And every secret seemed to lead back to Vanessa.
"Where is the second will?""
Daniel took out his phone.
He showed me an old photograph of a sealed envelope.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Our father's.
*LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT — TO BE OPENED ONLY IN THE PRESENCE OF MY SONS.*
I looked at Daniel.
"Where did you get this?""
"Emily took a photograph before hiding it.""
"Where?""
"Inside the lining of an old suitcase.""
I remembered the suitcase Claire had mentioned.
The one containing Emily's letter.
"Then why did you say it's at Vanessa's house?""
"Because Vanessa took the suitcase.""
I stared at him.
"When?""
"About a month after Emily died. She told me she was donating some of her belongings.""
My jaw tightened.
"You let her take it?""
Daniel looked ashamed.
"I didn't know what was inside at the time.""
I closed my eyes.
"How did you find out?""
"Emily left me a message.""
He opened his phone.
There was a voice recording.
Emily's voice came through the speaker.
"Daniel, if you're listening to this, please don't let Vanessa destroy the suitcase. Your father left something important inside it. Marcus needs to know, but he isn't ready to understand why.""
The recording ended.
I looked at Daniel.
"Why didn't you tell me about this earlier?""
"Because Vanessa told me she had already destroyed it.""
"Did you believe her?""
"No.""
He looked at me.
"I was afraid she had it.""
I sat down.
"Then we need to get it back.""
Daniel nodded.
But before we could leave, Rebecca called.
"Marcus, where are you?""
"At the hospital.""
"Good. I need you to listen carefully. We've received information from the insurance company.""
"What information?""
"The beneficiary amendment on Emily's policy was submitted electronically.""
I leaned forward.
"Can they identify who submitted it?""
"Yes. The request came from a device registered to your home.""
My blood ran cold.
"Whose device?""
"Vanessa's personal laptop.""
I looked at Daniel.
Rebecca continued.
"There's another issue. The policy was amended again after Emily's death.""
"What?""
"Someone attempted to redirect the payout through a trust account.""
"Did it go through?""
"No. The insurance company flagged the request because the supporting documents were inconsistent.""
I exhaled.
"Who was the trust account registered to?""
Rebecca hesitated.
"Vanessa Whitmore.""
The original surname.
I felt a chill.
"Rebecca, there's something else. We believe she may have been connected to my father's estate.""
"Then we need the will.""
"That's what we're trying to find.""
"Marcus, don't go to Vanessa's house alone. If she has evidence, she may destroy it.""
I agreed.
Then Daniel's phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
It was Vanessa.
He answered on speaker.
"Daniel.""
Her voice sounded almost cheerful.
"I was wondering when you two would finally figure it out.""
I stepped closer.
"Where is the suitcase?""
Vanessa laughed.
"Hello, Marcus.""
"Where is it?""
"You're asking the wrong question.""
"Then give me the right one.""
She paused.
"Do you know why Emily hid your father's will?""
I said nothing.
Vanessa continued.
"Because she discovered something that would have destroyed your family.""
"What?""
"She discovered that your father had another child.""
I looked at Daniel.
Vanessa laughed again.
"And not only that. He left that child everything.""
My stomach tightened.
"You're lying.""
"Am I?""
She spoke slowly.
"Your father changed his will three days before he died. He left the estate to his biological daughter. Your mother knew.
Daniel knew. Emily knew.""
I turned toward my brother.
His face had gone pale.
"Daniel?""
He looked away.
Vanessa continued.
"Your family spent years pretending I didn't exist. Your father promised me he would make things right. Then he died before he could.""
"Did you kill him?""
Her laughter stopped.
"Be careful, Marcus.""
"Did you kill Emily?""
"Emily destroyed everything.""
"Did you change her medication?""
Silence.
Then Vanessa said:
"You should ask why your wife kept your father's will instead of giving it to you.""
The call disconnected.
I turned toward Daniel.
"Tell me she's lying.""
He looked at me for several seconds.
Then he reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded document.
It was a photocopy of the second will.
I took it.
The first page named my father.
The second page named his beneficiaries.
The third page contained a handwritten declaration.
I read the sentence twice.
Then I looked at Daniel.
Our father had left the family estate to a woman named Vanessa Whitmore.
But there was a condition.
The inheritance would only become valid if she could prove her identity through a birth certificate and a DNA test.
Beneath the condition was another line.
If Vanessa cannot establish her identity, the estate shall pass equally to my two sons, Marcus and Daniel.
I stared at the document.
"Then why is she threatening us?""
Daniel's voice was barely audible.
"Because there's a problem.""
"What problem?""
He pointed to the final page.
The will had been signed and witnessed.
But the date was strange.
It was dated three days before our father died.
And beneath the signature was a handwritten note.
*Biological paternity confirmed.*
I looked up.
"Is she really Dad's daughter?""
Daniel nodded.
"That's what the DNA report says.""
I felt as if the floor had disappeared beneath me.
Then I noticed something else.
The DNA report wasn't between my father and Vanessa.
It was between my father and someone else.
Someone whose name had been carefully blacked out.
I looked at Daniel.
"Who is this?""
He hesitated.
Then he whispered:
"That's what Emily was trying to find out.""
I turned the page.
At the bottom of the report, a second name was visible.
*MAYA CARTER.*
My daughter.
I couldn't breathe.
Vanessa wasn't simply trying to inherit my father's estate.
She had somehow connected Maya to the inheritance.
And if the report was genuine, the little girl upstairs in my life was at the center of a family secret nobody had ever told me.
My phone vibrated.
A message from Vanessa appeared.
*Now you understand why I needed Maya to stop talking about Emily. Your daughter knows more than you think.*
May you like
Then another message arrived.
*And tomorrow, I'm coming to collect what belongs to me.*
