Chapter 14: The Photograph That Exposed Her
I arrived at Daniel's house twenty minutes later.
Claire was waiting in the living room with a small photograph in her hands.
Maya sat on the sofa beside her, coloring quietly.
When she saw me, she put down her pencils.
"Daddy!""
I knelt and hugged her.
"Hey, sweetheart.""
She wrapped her good arm around my neck.
"Are you mad at me?""
I pulled back.
"Why would I be mad at you?""
"Because I found the photograph.""
My chest tightened.
"No, Maya. You didn't do anything wrong.""
She looked toward Claire.
"Mommy was holding a baby.""
"I know.""
"Was it me?""
I shook my head.
"No. It was someone else.""
Maya frowned.
"Then why did Mommy keep it?""
I glanced at Claire.
She handed me the photograph.
Emily was sitting in a hospital chair, smiling weakly while holding a newborn baby wrapped in a white blanket.
On the back, in her handwriting, were the words:
*Vanessa Whitmore. Daughter born April 14.*
I stared at the date.
It was more than twenty years before Emily had married me.
I turned the photograph over again.
"Where did you find this?""
"In the little jewelry box," Claire said.
"There was a folded note beneath it.""
She handed me another piece of paper.
The handwriting was Emily's.
I promised her I would keep this secret until she was ready to face the truth. I never imagined she would come back into our lives this way.
I read it twice.
"Emily knew Vanessa as a baby?""
Claire nodded.
"She told me once that she had worked at a hospital during college. She volunteered in the maternity ward. Apparently, Vanessa's mother was there.""
I looked at the photograph.
"Why would Emily have kept it?""
"Because she believed Vanessa's mother had died shortly after giving birth. Emily felt sorry for the baby.""
I looked at Claire.
"Did she know Vanessa grew up to become the woman who married me?""
"Not at first. She recognized her later.""
The room went quiet.
Then Maya spoke.
"Daddy?""
I turned.
"Yes?""
"Is that the lady who wrote on my cast?""
I felt something tighten in my chest.
"Yes, sweetheart.""
Maya looked at the photograph.
"Why did Mommy know her?""
I took her small hand.
"That's what we're trying to understand.""
Claire brought me another document.
It was a hospital birth record.
The mother's name was listed as Elaine Whitmore.
The father's name was blank.
But beneath it was a handwritten notation.
*Possible paternal identification pending.*
I looked at Claire.
"Where did this come from?""
"It was in the same box.""
Before I could say anything, Rebecca entered with Officer Bennett.
"We've got an update," she said.
I stood.
"About the DNA report?""
"Yes. The laboratory has located the original submission.""
Officer Bennett opened a folder.
"The sample was submitted under Marcus Carter's name, but the authorization was forged. The laboratory's internal notes indicate the sample was taken from a child's hairbrush.""
I looked at Maya.
Rebecca gently moved closer.
"There's something else. The result was never a direct comparison between Vanessa and your father. The report was altered before it was sent to the estate attorney.""
"Who altered it?""
"Someone with access to the laboratory's reporting system.""
Officer Bennett showed me a printed email.
The sender was Dr. Harris.
The recipient was Vanessa.
The message was short.
The family comparison will be enough to support the claim if nobody examines the original data.
I stared at the screen.
"He's still involved.""
"Yes," Bennett said.
"We're preparing to question him.""
Then Rebecca placed another document on the table.
It was a certified copy of the original will.
"The estate attorney found this in a sealed file. It was never replaced by the photocopy Vanessa has been circulating.""
I read the first page.
My father had indeed acknowledged a daughter named Vanessa.
But he had not left her the estate outright.
The will stated that she could receive a modest inheritance only if her identity and parentage were independently established. The family estate was to remain in trust for his two sons.
I looked at Rebecca.
"So she lied about everything.""
"She misrepresented the terms. The original will also contains a clause disqualifying anyone who used fraud or coercion to obtain the inheritance.""
Officer Bennett nodded.
"Which means the documents we've collected may be important.""
I looked again at the photograph.
Emily holding Vanessa as a baby.
A strange thought occurred to me.
"Why would Emily have promised to keep this secret?""
Claire looked at the birth record.
"Maybe she knew something about Vanessa's father.""
A knock sounded at the front door.
Officer Bennett went to answer it.
A uniformed officer stood outside.
"Detective, Dr. Harris is here. He says he wants to make a statement.""
Bennett looked at me.
"Do you want to hear what he has to say?""
I nodded.
Dr. Harris entered a few minutes later.
He looked older than I remembered.
His tie was crooked, and his hands shook.
He sat across from me.
"I know you hate me," he began.
I didn't answer.
He looked at Maya, then quickly lowered his eyes.
"I never wanted a child involved.""
"Then why did you help Vanessa?""
He swallowed.
"Because she told me your father had destroyed her mother's life. She said she only wanted what was owed to her.""
"Did you change Emily's medication?""
He closed his eyes.
"Yes.""
The room went silent.
I felt my hands curl into fists.
"What did you give her?""
"Medication that wasn't part of her prescribed treatment. Vanessa told me it would make Emily confused and weak. She wanted Marcus to believe Emily was becoming unstable.""
"Did you know it could kill her?""
"I knew there were risks.""
"Did you give her the final dose?""
He shook his head.
"No. Someone else changed the hospital medication.""
"Who?""
He looked toward Officer Bennett.
"I have proof.""
Bennett leaned forward.
"Then tell us.""
Dr. Harris opened his briefcase and removed a small flash drive.
"The hospital access log was altered. I was told Daniel and Margaret had entered the medication area. But the original security footage shows something different.""
My heart began pounding.
"Who was there?""
He looked at me.
"Vanessa.""
I stared at him.
"She changed the dose?""
"Yes.""
"How did she get inside?""
"She had an access card. I gave it to her.""
Officer Bennett took the flash drive.
"And your involvement in the father's death?""
Dr. Harris went pale.
He looked at me.
"Your father discovered that Vanessa had paid me to falsify medical records. He threatened to report us. Vanessa arranged to meet him at the warehouse.""
"Did she kill him?""
Dr. Harris shook his head.
"No. I did.""
The words seemed to stop the air in the room.
He continued, voice breaking.
"I followed him there. We argued. He had the documents.
I tried to take them. He fell during the struggle.""
I stared at him.
"Was he alive?""
"Yes.""
"Then what did you do?""
Dr. Harris began crying.
"I left him there.""
Officer Bennett stood.
"You're under arrest.""
As the officers took him away, he turned toward me.
"There's one more thing, Marcus.""
I looked at him.
"Your mother didn't kill your father. She didn't even know I was there. But Vanessa made her believe she had caused his death by giving him the wrong information about the meeting.""
I felt sick.
"Why?""
"To keep her quiet.""
Then he said the words that changed everything.
"Vanessa was the one who arranged the accident scene afterward. She made it look like your father had driven off the road.""
I looked toward the window.
Outside, a car was parked across the street.
A woman sat behind the steering wheel.
Vanessa.
May you like
She was watching the house.
And when our eyes met, she smiled.
