Chapter 4: The Man Who Promised to Save Her
I read Emily's letter three times before I could accept what it was telling me.
Someone had interfered with my wife's medication.
Someone had known she was vulnerable.
And someone had paid our family doctor to keep quiet.
I looked at Claire.
"Who paid him?""
Claire shook her head.
"Emily never found out. She only knew that money had been transferred into an account connected to his medical practice.""
"How did she know?""
"She found a bank statement in the study. It wasn't supposed to be there.""
I looked down at the photograph again.
Dr. Harris stood beside Vanessa, holding a medical bag. His expression was calm. Vanessa was looking directly at the camera.
It was dated the night Emily died.
I remembered that night.
I remembered standing beside Emily's hospital bed, holding her hand while the machines beeped.
I remembered Dr. Harris telling me her condition had deteriorated unexpectedly.
I remembered Vanessa bringing me coffee and telling me I needed to rest.
And I remembered leaving the hospital for forty minutes because Vanessa insisted she would stay with Emily.
Forty minutes.
I had spent those forty minutes sitting in my car, crying because I thought I was about to lose my wife.
When I returned, Emily was gone.
I looked at Claire.
"Why didn't you show me this before?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Because Vanessa told me Emily had been confused near the end. She said Emily had accused several people of trying to hurt her.""
"And you believed her?""
"No. But I didn't have proof.""
"You had this photograph.""
"I was afraid, Marcus.""
Her voice broke.
"Vanessa told me that if I kept making accusations, she'd make sure I never saw Maya again. She said she had evidence that I was emotionally unstable and that the court would never let me near a child.""
I stared at her.
"She threatened you?""
Claire nodded.
"She knew I was already struggling after Emily died. She used that against me.""
Daniel came into the room carrying a glass of water.
"Nobody touches those documents," he said.
"We're making copies, and we're getting a lawyer.""
I nodded.
Then I heard Vanessa descending the staircase.
She entered the living room wearing a different blouse, her hair neatly arranged.
She looked at Claire.
Then at the envelope in my hand.
"Well," she said quietly.
"This is becoming a family reunion.""
Claire stood.
"Don't you dare.""
Vanessa gave a small laugh.
"Still playing the grieving sister?""
I stepped between them.
"Enough.""
Vanessa looked at me.
"Marcus, I know how this looks.""
"Then explain it.""
She glanced at the photograph.
Her face hardened.
"Emily was sick. She was taking several medications. Dr.
Harris was treating her. That's all this proves.""
"Why were you with him the night she died?""
"Because you asked me to help.""
"I never asked you to stand beside her doctor while he handled her medication.""
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
"You're twisting everything.""
I placed the photograph on the table.
"Who paid him?""
She stared at it.
Then she looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.
"You're going to destroy our marriage over a dead woman's accusations?""
"No. I'm trying to find out whether someone destroyed her life.""
Vanessa's face turned red.
"Emily was never happy. She made everyone miserable. She couldn't accept that you were moving on.""
"She was my wife.""
"And I am your wife now!""
Her voice echoed through the room.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Maya appeared at the living room entrance.
She was holding a stuffed rabbit.
Vanessa immediately changed her expression.
"Sweetheart, come here.""
Maya stepped backward.
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
"Don't be ridiculous. I'm talking to you.""
I moved toward my daughter.
"Go sit with Uncle Daniel.""
Maya nodded and disappeared into the kitchen.
Vanessa watched her leave.
Then she lowered her voice.
"You are making a terrible mistake.""
I took out my phone.
"I've already contacted an attorney. We're also arranging an independent review of Emily's medical records.""
Vanessa went completely still.
"An independent review?""
"Yes.""
She looked at the envelope again.
Then she did something strange.
She smiled.
"Do whatever you want, Marcus.""
She picked up her handbag.
"Just remember something. You weren't there for Emily as much as you pretend you were.""
I felt the accusation land.
She continued.
"You were always working. You left her alone for hours. You trusted other people to look after her.""
I looked at the floor.
Because part of me knew she was right.
I had worked long hours.
I had missed appointments.
I had believed that providing financially was enough.
But I had never knowingly put Emily in danger.
Vanessa walked toward the front door.
"Where are you going?"" I asked.
"Out.""
"You're not taking Maya.""
She stopped.
Slowly, she turned.
"Excuse me?""
"Maya is staying with me.""
"She's my daughter too.""
"No, Vanessa. She's not.""
Her expression became frighteningly blank.
Then she opened the door.
"Fine.""
She stepped outside.
But before leaving, she looked directly at me.
"You should ask your daughter what she saw the night Emily died.""
The door closed.
I stood there for several seconds.
Then I turned toward Claire.
"What did she mean?""
Claire looked devastated.
"I think Emily was trying to tell me something about that night.""
"What?""
Claire reached into the envelope and pulled out a smaller piece of paper.
It was a hospital visitor record.
Beside the name of the person who had entered Emily's room at 9:42 p.m., someone had written a handwritten note.
*CHILD PRESENT.*
I looked at the name beneath it.
Maya Carter.
My nine-year-old daughter had been at the hospital the night her mother died.
And I had never known.
That evening, after Maya fell asleep at Daniel's house, I sat beside her bed.
Her cast rested on a pillow.
Her stuffed rabbit was tucked beneath her chin.
I brushed a strand of hair away from her forehead.
"Baby," I whispered, "did you visit Mom the night she died?""
Maya opened her eyes.
For a moment, she looked confused.
Then her expression changed.
She slowly nodded.
"Yes.""
I felt my throat tighten.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Vanessa said I wasn't supposed to.""
"What happened?""
Maya looked toward the bedroom door.
May you like
Then she whispered:
"Daddy, I saw Vanessa put something in Mommy's cup.""
